One of my more radical beliefs is that everyone, regardless of occupation, should be required to take a first aid course at some point in their adult life so that, even if you don’t keep up the cert, if someone says to you “My chest has been really hurting and I’ve been having trouble breathing I think I’m gonna lay down for a bit” your hindbrain kicks in and you say “That’s a bad idea. We’re going to the ER.”

Really awesome how angry this post, which I made a little over a year ago after I saved my grandpa’s life because it turned out his shortness of breath and chest pains were a heart attack brought on by congestive heart failure, has made the most pedantic and myopic people on earth. Sorry that I did not say “I’m calling an ambulance because the EMTs have training and equipment to keep someone stable” or make an addendum to remark on how expensive an ambulance is for some people. I thought “we’re going to the hospital” covered both scenarios. Sorry that ER visits are expensive. The split second choice was to either deal with it or let him die. Someday you might have to make a similar decision and I hope you choose the empathetic one instead of the practical one.

I feel like a lot of people are using the terms “bed-rotting” and “rest” interchangeably and I think that’s a huge problem. If you’re so tired you need a day in bed to just relax and do nothing you’re not rotting, you’re resting. You need rest. You were not designed to be on the go 24/7 but modern society expects this of us for some reason.
