It had all started with a cure. The cure, as the media and influential persons had referred to it, since it was the cure that everyone had been breaking their brains over for decades â the cure for cancer. The test runs had gone near to perfect. Out of 100 persons, 99 quickly regained their full health â but thatâs where the problem started. The one person the cure didnât have its desired effect on, got a strange fever and when the team of doctors and scientists responsible for the project came together for a closer look, it appeared that the cancer cells of the subject had stopped multiplying â as it was intended â but all the other cells had started mutating â which, needless to say, definitely was not.
It quickly spiralled downwards from there. The first batch of the medicine had already shipped out before the side effects on patient zero had manifested, and now new cases of this strange mutation were appearing all over the world. The man who had initiated the project, former weapon manufacturer Tony Stark, was demanded through every single news channel to explain what was happening, how it even had happened and what he was going to do to put a stop to whatever was happening right now.
After a press conference that was prematurely stopped because of a failed assassination attempt on Stark, another conference was planned, this time stopped by a blearing alarm and soon after evacuated; the dead had started to rise and chaos ensued.
So that, basically, is how and when the world as we all knew it went to shit.
Of course, Tony could have stayed locked down in the absolute safety of his tower, and thatâs what he did for the first two months after all means of communication â television, radio, internet â had lost their function. But in the same time, not knowing what was happening in the outside world and the immense feeling of guilt that was eating away at him, made him slowly but surely lose his mind. At first, he converted this restless energy into spending days and nights researching a possible cure for this infestation, but after finding out that there was literally nothing he could do, he⌠lost it.
In the depths of a certain night, he left his tower and its inhabitants behind, intending to experience the new world first hand. Shops and streets and houses were ravaged, dead and undead corpses were everywhere and on that moment, Tony knew there was no way back, no way he could redeem himself. The world was lost and he did not deserve to go back to his tower and live in safety while he was the sole reason the girl behind his favourite coffee shopâs counter was currently trying to take a bite from his neck. So he bashed her skull in and ran.
He should have just let her take that bite, he thought more than once while he made his way out of New York City, as there was nothing to live for anyway. But every time a new occasion presented itself, he did what he did best â he ran. At least, he did until he had gone without sleep and food for a good five days; which wasnât unnormal in the daily life of Tony Stark, when he let himself get carried away by new projects and such. But this wasnât a project. This was physical and mental exhaustion in a world that was barely recognizable as the one it was a year ago. He had trouble breathing, his vision blurred and failed at times and he kept on stumbling over the branches in the forest; he knew his clumsy sounds attracted the zombies, but even though he tried, he no longer could bring himself to care.
He heard them before he saw them. Groaning, growling, Â moaning. Tony lifted his head to see the rotten corpses stagger towards him, their hands reaching out for his living body. He took a shaky breath, closed his eyes, and kept on walking.
That was when the sound of running footsteps and the familiar thump of bodies made him look back again. The silhouette of a man â a living person, nonetheless â was seen, slicing the throats of some of the zombies, making them fall down. And he was shouting. Tony stopped walking for a second; the words took a while before they were actually processed but when they were, Tony took the manâs advice and ran. Well, he ran towards the man and shove him out of the way of the zombie that had crawled up again and was currently trying to bury its teeth in his neck.
âAre you fucking insane?â he hissed, and used the knife he had found several nights before on the body of a rotting corpse to stab the zombie in its head. âDonât just cut their throats. You need to-â he kicked off another zombie that was currently trying to attack them, âstab their heads or theyâll keep on coming back.â To prove his point, he stabbed the zombie in its eye and it fell down in an unmoving heap. âHow have you even survived until now?â
