“It is not!” He replied with a cheeky grin. He motioned for the girl to keep on going and take a seat first, then moving to sit by her side. “I’ve always wanted to come here, but I thought it would just look very weird to be here by myself.”

He opens the menu widely, so both of them can look at it. It had a good amount of poop shaped food and other washroom themed stuff. The food had washroom related names and colors, and it just made Shouta even more excited.

 “Also, I need help to order, you know how bad my Korean is.” He fakes a sad face, knowing he looked not sad at all, and pushing the menu closer to her so she can take a better look of it.

Shouta was staring at his very weird cupcakes. Sophia allowed him to try some decorations since they were closed for the day, but little Alice wanted to hang out together a little longer. 

Even Alice’s icing looked better than his, and Shouta couldn’t help but to pout. “This is no ability.” He replies, extremely disappointed with his creation. 

So far, he had helped Sophia as a barista and cashier. Of course he was eager to go into the kitchen and do something, so his boss allowed him some little things here and there the last couple of days. And now, looking at his ugly cupcakes, Shouta knew exactly why Sophia never let him try something bigger.

Her sentence was ringing in his head for long seconds, his mind trying to assimilate it and formulate a proper answer. It’s not like he was refusing to make her dinner, he would never. Specially when she was so sweet when asking it. It was more because he didn’t really wanted to invite her over or it would look like something else. 

The last thing he wanted, in the end, was to make a scandal before the girl even debuts. 

“I will!” He blurts out without noticing, his heart being too soft for her. He couldn’t just say no. “But...” Pursing his lips, the boy hesitates. He had already figured something out, but was too afraid to tell her and make her upset. “What if I make you a cute bento box? So you’ll have something as cute as you are to eat when practicing!”

          AMONG THE SEA OF STRANGERS, THERE ARE also familiar faces. though there’s the option of heading off into the audience or staying backstage, he had opted to stay at the back, curious jetnut hues did peek out from behind the curtains when it came to a certain friends performance. in his own way he had sent out his cheers and little waves of his hand. then ran backstage when the entire scene was over to wait patiently for his friend.

         the corner of his mouth curls up into a broad smile, eyes glittering with much joy when he spots the other. the little boy wishes to embrace the other, but he holds back when he sees the snack. instead, he reaches his hand over with a comforting pat on the other’s back and then a squeeze of the other’s arm.

❝   –   i was awesome? no you were amazing. i was watching you from back stage, ❞ he chirps with much glee, even daring to imitate the other’s motions which he has memorized from the brief watch.

❝　–　you know i’m your biggest fan! i’m glad you had a lot of fun. we should both celebrate. with snacks and some drinks too. ❞ as if on some queue, junjae pulls out two drink he’s pulled from a vending machine earlier.

Shuta chuckles when Junjae starts dancing, mindlessly joining for the dance steps and singing along. He finishes it with laughter, happy to see his friend enjoying himself despite looking so tired. 

“I practiced a lot, but again, I can’t be as good as you were! You were so cool!” He compliments again, those words coming from the bottom of his heart. Right now, he was probably Junjae’s number one fan. 

When Shouta notices the drinks, his eyes widen a bit. “I feel like we are in sync!” He chuckles, putting the snacks on the table and taking a seat. “Sounds like a good reward after burning calories on stage!” 

Being a fanboy and standing face-to-face to his idol wasn’t easy.

He tried keeping his cool, imagining it would be much easier to approach her now, so when she debuts and gets famous, she will still know who he is. He kept smiling, truly overpowered by the happiness of second place.

“A trainee?” He chuckles, shaking his head. “I’m definitely not born to that. But it was fun to sing and dance. Now I know why you like it so much.” He nods softly. “Maybe next time I’ll perform a song from your future girlgroup!”

Even though the place was crowded, she seemed to be by herself. Shouta checked the surroundings curiously, noticing she wasn’t with a group of trainee friends of hers.

Shouta has adrenaline still running through his veins.

He crouched down, handing Alice his magic wand. When the young girl beamed in happiness, he hugged her, then standing up with her secure in his arms.

“Alice was the best! I could sing and dance well because of her!” Shouta says with a bright smile, pecking the chubby cheek of the little girl. “I’m so happy I got second place! I’m happy I made you proud!”

Shouta could notice the groups of girls staring at him, giggling between themselves, and he knew he probably scored so high because of his popularity. But the boy rather believes it was thanks to his hard work that he got such a good score, he felt happier like this.

the pros of knowing another language that someone else shared meant that she could complain right out in public without worrying about someone glaring at her. or at least, that’s what usually happens. the city is small, but there are international students whom flitter in occasionally looking for a change of pace. the boy she’s currently bumping her arm into every few minutes is one himself and certainly so is she. which is what makes switching tongue so easy for her.

her patience had been wearing thin. there’s those things people blame on some school rush and then there are things like this - it’s not even an exorbitant event!! they are simply two kids wanting to get their own share of food which so happened to be a special that one of the food places was running. it vaguely reminded her of those lunch time rushes back in japan, the not so pleasant memory possibly stirring her up even more. especially, when she sees a boy cutting in line right in front of her.

❝ who do they think they are? some people are so rude! ❞ switching tongues, she crosses her arms in front of her with a scowl. ❝ we're the ones who lined up here for half an hour already waiting for food and they think they can just barge in? i hope they trip and eat the ugly floor the janitor hasn’t wiped yet. ❞

Having someone to speak his mother tongue was a relief. 

Despite their past, Karin was still one of the few people in Hwaryung Shouta was very close to. The girl was friendly, light-hearted and chill, which made the boy comfortable all the time around her. 

It also helped the fact that she could speak Japanese, so things with her were lighter for Shouta and he could just be himself without a worry in the world. Therefore, little outings like the one from that afternoon were very common between the two of them and were moments Shouta looked forward a lot.

The day could have been great, but not everything went as planned. Despite the crowded place and Karin’s lack of patience, they were unlucky enough to have someone cutting in line in front of them. 

Instead, the boy walked around the backstage area with a bag of snacks and drinks in his hand, looking for Junjae. He was feeling light thanks to the fact that his performance was already over. A couple of hours earlier he could barely think straight. 

Shouta had watched Junjae’s performance earlier and was mesmerized by it. There was a huge difference between his amateur performance and his friend’s professional one. He truly loved it and wished he could have given the crowd an encore, since the Japanese boy felt like watching that a billion times.

When he finally spotted Junjae, he smiled and approached him, showing the snacks first. “Congratulations, you were awesome!” He said enthusiastically. “You deserve some treats since you worked hard.”

Shouta studied his friend for a moment, and he could see how tired Junjae looked like. He felt like it was a good idea to bring food, in the end. “And thank you for bringing me with you. It was fun!”

He checked himself one more time in the mirror. He was wearing overalls, sneakers and a shirt in pastel colors that complimented his light hair color. He even added some glitter to his eyelids when doing his make up earlier. Shouta was all ready for his performance, but his mind wasn’t.

Shouta was really, really bad at saying “no”. He knew one day it would get him into trouble, he just didn’t know it would be so soon. When Junjae asked him to join the talent show, at first, he thought it was an invitation to just go and watch Junjae perform. In the end it meant he would be performing too.

Clutching his pink magical wand over his heart, Shouta waited anxiously for his name to be called, peeking from time to time to the crowd that was in front of the stage. Even though he was scared and regretful of his choices in life, deep inside he felt excited. 

He wanted new adventures, after all. He moved to a new country to experience new things and get rid of the monotony of his life. And that performance was stepping way out of his comfort zone, which made it extremely special. It was a new adventure int he end.

With his mix of feelings tugging at his heart, he finally heard his name being called and stepped on the stage with trembling fingers and a nervous smile. 

With the magical wand in one hand, the mic in the other, he faced the crowd. At that exact moment he felt anything else. It was just him, the stage, the performance he practiced for so many days and the crowd looking at him with curiosity.

When the music started, he could hear the crowd roar. He purposely chose a national favorite (probably to give him extra points), which made him smile, knowing that even if he sucks at singing and dancing, people would still have fun.

Into de New World by Girl’s Generation was his choice. 

He counted the tempo in his mind, doing the dance steps while happily waving his wand to the rhythm. And when he started singing, his voice sounded stable with the words he practiced over and over.

When he reached the chorus, he could see everyone singing and dancing with him. This boosted his confidence and made him smile, singing with all his heart from that moment on. 

The moment of the high note was the most important point of his performance, and he actually practiced that over and over until he lost his voice for a couple of days. Everyone on the audience seemed ready for it, and maybe because everyone was yelling at that moment, no one really noticed his high note wasn’t a proper high note, but at least his voice didn’t crack. 

Shouta finished his performance without big mistakes. He probably looked clumsy, his voice probably wasn’t in the right pitch and his dance moves probably weren’t too accurate, but in the end he had fun.
