Athanasia was married off into an unhappy later turned abusive marriage, with barely any support. She was physically, emotionally, and sexually abused the moment she had her first miscarriage. She was hated by her household, she didn’t get along with any her stepdaughters except for Rachel, since they couldn’t accept a stepmother younger than them, even though it’s not her fault. and it didn’t help the fact Athanasia was already not well liked because of her unlikeable personality

It’s your whether you feel like they deserved to live or not after Athanasia died, because it isn’t simply black or white. Roynald death was justified for the fact he’s a predator who abused all three of his wives, and gut open two for the chance of a son to be born. And the boy he so desperately wanted and killed Athanasia for, turns out not to even be his( though he never lives to know). But the death of the Windnor sisters and the innocent servants weren’t justified.

While yes the girls didn’t like Athanasia for the mere fact they didn’t support the marriage, is it something worth dying for? I think not. Yes they were bystanders who were aware of the abuse Athana endured, making their silence complicit, but it’s not like they could do anything to stop, he was the head of the household they survived in and their father, to them Athanasia was some poor girl who just couldn’t do her duty to sire an heir and will get discarded just like their mothers

the Windnor clan ending was always death, even if Athanasia had lived. Their death was something orchestrated by Athanasia long before Claude did the job for her. Their death saved Athanasia’s image turning her into a Madonna and her children afterwards, even though the rumors of bastardy followed them throughout their lives, it was harder to prove with the clan no longer existing and they looked like their grandfather. Their death symbolized a part of Athanasia’s suffering ending along with her

When writing ( well planning to) her as an empress consort, she’s based her on empress Theodora of the Byzantine empire. Commoner courtesans who rose to become influential empresses of their respective empires despite the struggle they faced from their many political rivals

While nobles are fragile with their favor,discriminating Diana because of her commoner status, her career, and the fact she’s a foreigner. The commoners welcomed her with open arms, they loved her.

Diana used her new found power as empress, took care of the commoners not only as moral obligations from another commoner as herself ( commoners stick together regardless) but as a tool to use against nobles who want to harm her and her children. She helped built safe houses, hospitals, schools, safe orphanages, kept nobility in check, created an advance spy network that monitored every noble house, influenced many political affairs and helped passed out laws ( she told Claude what to do and he does it). Her influence over Obelia made her a force to be reckoned with and a threat

I wouldn’t say she was the best empress Obelia ever had because there’s a handful of good empresses and even better ones. But she is one of the most influential ones who made Obelia into a better place. She was what they needed

She would wonder how come their relationship was intact( not knowing what canon athy had to do to maintain it) but hers didn’t, how normal and healthy her counterpart is, while she is a time ticking trainwreck. She would’ve justifiably crashed out and would’ve been moving like prime Claude and Sevenier, but she actually loves her kids( still not a good parent unfortunately)

Death was honestly was the best outcome for her, because she actually got to rest in slight peace
