She does learn and grow and BECOME a good leader, but it's a struggle, and through the whole series we can still see her independence looming large. Sometimes it's a good thing, like when she learns to live for herself after divorcing Donald, but sometimes it gets in the way like when she runs off on her own to deliver a baby, or whenever her deep loneliness starts to show. Like any core characteristic, I think Margaret's independence is one of her greatest strengths, but it's also something she has to keep in check to make sure she doesn't become isolated.
