This 112 page color and black and white combined artbook from 1999 celebrates both the series and movie artwork and production process!! You can now peruse the totally reasonable copy above on the Empty Movement forums, or you can go hit the Internet Archive for the bonkers 8k pixels across per page version!!

One of the interviews featured in this book has already been translated, should you want to read more from Juugo Kazayama about script and storyboarding the series!

This artbook was an early source of some of the rarer pieces of Utena art, and has been part of the Empty Movement gallery for over 20 years! I'm hyped to finally share a copy of it that I think gets across the 'experience' of the book in person as best I could manage! The images have been descreened and selectively cleaned for legibility..a miserable process given the annoying repeating background that the scanner choked on. But my work is your win! I think it's so important and crucial for 20 year olds to witness older people who are genuinely bad at some aspects of being a person but are still living lives they find meaningful and enjoyable. Not just "oh I got married and you can too" but like. sometimes you cannot for the life of you finish college or find a good job or stay in a relationship or arrive to locations on time or whatever it is you think when you're 20 that you HAVE to be able to do. But you wind up finding a place in the world anyway. It happens!

Hi I'm so sorry I don't mean to embarass you but I think your headphones fell out of your phone, it must have happened at the bus stop, your phone has just been playing out loud in your hand this whole time and you didn't notice. I was watching Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!! and between reading the manga and starting the anime I completely forgot that the monumental school trip took place in Yokohama, which was fun because between these two events I managed to visit Yokohama myself!

When they showed Akarenga and the evil lair building, I literally said out loud "they should show Yokohama Marine Tower next" and as if the animators heard me that was indeed the very next shot!!!

Fully catering to my very specific interests of lighthouses, tall towers and buildings, not to mention gay aquarium dates which we saw earlier in the episode~

The final scene with Hirose telling Nakamura he already considers him a friend was excellent in the manga, but hit even harder in anime format, thanks to yet another fanservice moment for me with the ED starting to play before the credits and how the photos were incorporated into the ED. Not to mention how the song they picked fits the scene perfectly and elevates it to what can only be described like a religious experience

All in all, this was one of the best anime episodes I've seen in a while!
