You think toxicity is love, but it’s actually the absence of it. It feels like love because your nervous system mistakes unpredictability for connection. The emotional highs feel intoxicating, and the lows make the highs seem even more meaningful. But love isn’t supposed to keep you in survival mode. Toxic behaviors like mixed signals, hot & cold behavior, jealousy, manipulation, silent treatment, emotional unavailability, disrespect, and making you constantly earn someone’s affection create intensity not intimacy
Love feels calmer than people expect. It’s consistent, emotionally safe, respectful, and reliable. It doesn’t leave you constantly wondering where you stand. It lets you rest instead of making you fight to be chosen
Wanting to be chosen by others often points to a place where you’re not fully choosing yourself. The reason their toxic behavior feels so familiar, or even compelling, is because it’s mirroring the way you’re already treating yourself
If you abandon your own needs, ignore your intuition, tolerate disrespect, or constantly seek your worth through someone else’s approval etc it will feel familiar. And what feels familiar is often mistaken for love
The moment you start choosing yourself consistently, what once felt exciting starts to feel exhausting and what once felt “boring” starts to feel like peace
I got a job at a gas station across from a casino and a guy keeps coming in to buy whole cartons of cigarettes and talks in the third person calling himself "snake eyes pete" and every time I tell him his total hes like "tell ya what if old Pete rolls a snake eyes why dont you give it to him for free?" and he rolls the same set of loaded dice on the counter and it does not matter how many times he rolls snake eyes I will not give him the cartons for free he gets so mad

Our environment can override our natural instincts. You can naturally think, feel, or behave in ways that are healthy for you, but if the people around you don’t understand those behaviors, they’ll often label them as wrong. Over time you begin questioning your own instincts and replacing them with beliefs that help you fit in instead of helping you thrive
Examples:
A naturally curious child asks lots of questions. Adults call them “difficult,” so they learn to stay quiet
Someone enjoys spending time alone to recharge. Their friends call them antisocial, so they start forcing themselves to socialize even when they’re exhausted
A person has strong boundaries and says “no” when something doesn’t feel right. They’re labeled selfish, so they begin putting everyone else first
A child naturally expresses emotions. They’re told they’re “too sensitive,” so they learn to hide how they feel
Someone is excited about learning, reading, and growing. They’re teased for “thinking they’re better than everyone else,” so they stop sharing their interests
A child naturally trusts their gut when someone feels unsafe. Adults tell them, “Be nice,” so they learn to ignore their intuition
Someone prefers peace over drama. They’re called boring, so they start tolerating chaos just to feel accepted
A person is naturally ambitious and dreams big. Their environment says they’re unrealistic or arrogant, so they begin playing small
A child is naturally creative and imaginative. They’re constantly told to “be realistic,” and eventually stop creating
Someone naturally forgives but also walks away when they’re repeatedly hurt. Others call them cold or unforgiving, so they stay in unhealthy relationships longer than they should
The challenge isn’t always that your instincts are wrong. Sometimes they were simply interpreted through the lens of people who couldn’t recognize or value them. As we grow up, part of healing is learning to separate what is truly you from what your environment taught you to believe about yourself
