aaron at the end of “house on fire” (04x19) telling penelope (calling her penelope, too, by the way) that he knows she sees the good in people and he would never want her to change that
listen i’m just saying i know that he’s asking her to see the good in him too and she does she so does aaron
whenever Hotch calls someone by their first name shit gets real 💔 and I'm always here for ittt
soft soft soft things that aaron hotchner has done for others (both canon and headcanon) because he CARES ABOUT PEOPLE, okay??? he does, he really does,,, he's not a heartless guy at all
upon finding spencer passed out at his desk at the office, in the same clothes he wore yesterday and unfinished case files before him, aaron goes and buys him a coffee and a cookie from spencer's favourite coffee shop, putting them next to him and gently shaking him awake with a soft smile
penelope broke down once, like full on ugly crying i can't breathe breakdown, in front of him after a terrible case, and he surprised her by wrapping his strong arms around her and pulling her in close, resting his chin on her head and whispering "oh, penelope... what are we gonna do with you?" which made her laugh and sniffle into his chest and
1x08 - Natural Born Killer (3 of 3)
"You okay? Take your tie off for once in your life, huh."
"It's alright."
Why does he say "It's alright"? He's not saying "I'm okay," or something like that, but "It's alright". That's a weird choice of words in my head.
"He's learned to take the pain." I think he's not the only one, Hotch.
Look at the way Dave literally pulls Hotch into the hug. He grabs the small of his back and just throws him into his body. I’ve never seen Hotch hug ANYONE like that.

Hotch was a parentified child??
2 am terrible Hotch meta o’clock
He was the elder child in an abusive household and honestly it really does seem like the majority of us in that situation wind up raising our younger siblings, in my experience.
As an adult, he has an obsession with control and gets uncomfortable and angry when his authority is undermined, which could very well be a result of deriving his only sense of stability and safety in childhood from his authority and control over his brother.
Hotch is a character defined by his authority. Having power makes him feel safe and secure, which is evidenced by Foyet psychologically torturing him by taking away his authority over Haley & Jack, his house, his team, and even his own body/physical safety (he only lived because Foyet drove him to the hospital—he was completely at his mercy). I don’t know that Foyet did all of this on purpose, because I don’t think he’s that smart or whatever, but it was a clear narrative choice to show Hotch’s degradation and suffering by taking away his authority over everything in his life and reducing him to this screaming, sobbing, powerless mess in Derek’s arms. Who is he without a team to answer to him?
And obviously you all already know this, because you watch the show, but I’m just proposing that this is rooted in his childhood. Growing up, he was surrounded by uncertainty and violence, and the only thing he could be sure of was that his little brother needed him. Now, he’s surrounded by uncertainty and violence, and the into thing he can be sure of is that his team needs him. Right?
Also, the way he interacted with Sean in season one (chastising him for his bad decisions, trying to get him to take a white collar job, etc.) came off as very parental, like he had this deep sense of responsibility for Sean’s success. It seemed more dad than big brother, almost
Not to mention the episode where he talks about abusive fathers was just a few eps off of the Sean one, so it seems like they were hinting at a Hotch backstory reveal
The show should've explained better why being in control is so important to Hotch, as well as why Foyet managed to get to him by exploiting his authority
Was Hotch Abused?
I offer you my 2,300+ worded thoughts on the matter with episodes included. There's going to be lots and lots of talk about abuse so you're going to want to steer clear of that if that's something you're not cool with but for those of you interested... I give you all the proof I could think of:
Natural Born Killer.
In the eighth episode of the first season, “Natural Born Killer”, we meet Vincent Perrotta. His father was abusive but from the outside looking in, no one knew a thing. Perrotta started drinking at fourteen and committed petty crimes, as well as assault, for pleasure. Going as far as to kill his own father not too long after. But Perrotta is a monster and a psychopath so it’s clear we’re not supposed to sympathize which makes his interaction with Hotch so peculiar.
Hotch is our “Captain America”. A true neutral with an infinity for doing what’s right so it’s inconceivable to compare him to Perrotta and yet Hotch gives us some rather conflicting lines to dissect.
Before Gideon hands the interview over to Hotch, he spends a moment talking with the others out in the bullpen. The whole time he’s leaned back and he’s watching Morgan and Hotch. Now, at this point, we don’t know about the sexual abuse Derek Morgan faced at the hands of Carl Buford but there’s something about the way that Gideon spends the entirety of the conversation only looking at the two of them. Waiting for them to put together what he clearly already has and when Hotch does…
Hotch jumps straight into Perrotta’s profile, asking: “You grew up in a house that looked normal and happy, didn’t you Vincent?”, “But your father beat you every chance he got”
Perrotta excuses it with a shrug, “he smacked me around some, didn’t everybody’s old man?”
Thank you for gathering all these! There's proof everywhere if you pay him enough attention:(
🥀 platonic Reid & Hotch pls!!!
p.s your blog is one of my favourites ♥️
Ah, thank you so much!! I hope these don't suck... I was trying for ten, because you didn't ask for any of the other things, but let's see how many I can actually come up with...
🥀 and a ship (romantic or platonic) and i’ll write some sad headcanons
after Hardwick, they never do a custodial interview together again. Hotch only ever goes with Derek or Dave, and he will always schedule Reid's so someone else has to go with him
Reid was on the team when Adrian Bale happened. It was one of his first cases with the BAU, and he had so much faith in Gideon that when Hotch and Morgan disagreed with Gideon, Reid sided with him. It indirectly led to the death of six agents and Hotch never truly forgot that
there was only one occasion when Hotch told Reid to shut up. Obviously, there were several times when he would gently touch his arm or tell him they didn’t have the time but there was only one time he said shut up. Reid looked close to tears, Hotch felt like absolute shit, but he couldn’t take it back
after Maeve, Aaron drove Spencer home. When Spencer got out the car, Hotch said he was sorry. Spencer just looked at him and said: “Well maybe if you had been quicker, you wouldn’t have to be.” And it wasn’t fair of him, but it was easy to blame someone else. The worst part was Hotch just took it
whenever they had events or seminars or things like that, Reid would ask Hotch to do his tie for him. He could do it himself, but he preferred the way Hotch did it. This stopped after Gideon left
Reid looks to Hotch and sees what a father is meant to be. It means that in his head, Hotch is invincible and can come back from anything because come on, that’s his father figure. It means whenever Hotch does get injured, Reid can’t handle it. He has to leave
a part of Hotch resents the relationship Gideon has with Reid, and then he feels like a terrible person because Reid is like ten years younger than him, he shouldn’t be getting jealous, but he was the one that held the unit together after Boston, so it still hurts
Reid is well-aware of Hotch’s feelings, and then he ends up feeling guilty because he wants Gideon to appreciate everything Hotch has done but he doesn’t know how to say that to either of them
at Haley’s funeral, they sent Reid after Hotch when he wasn’t coming out of the bathroom because he was least likely to snap at Reid. Hotch was sat on the floor, and when Reid asked him if he could do anything, all Hotch said was “I need a parent” and he didn’t mean to, but Reid can’t be that person for Hotch so he just said “I know.”
whenever Hotch is unwell, Reid feels the need to do everything he can to make him feel better otherwise something bad will happen- a habit formed in childhood- but Hotch feels the need to act like nothing happens- also a habit formed in childhood
on the other hand, when Reid is unwell, he’ll reject any and all help because he grew up being the parent and doesn’t know how, but Hotch is an oldest sibling so it always devolves into an argument about boundaries and doubt in capabilities
Every time I remember Hotch had a bike in his office during season one and it was like to be implied he was biking to work I just-- I don't even know what to do with this information. Like good job you little environmental king but also like how was he doing that? Does he have a little backpack with his suit in it or is like full on Mike Ross to work just in his suit? How didn't he get hit? People in Virginia can't drive for shit and when you throw them in with people from Maryland and New Jersey that's dangerous.
There's no way he didn't get hit but good for him and his little bike
Um. Wheres the bike?
I just remembered this because I was rewatching season 2 earlier today. But there it is!
What the fuck
Bonus: He kept that bike there as a deterrent to visitors because they would have to sit there with that nasty wheel right up in their face.
He probably picked up the biking to work thing in Seattle. That's literally the most Pacific Northwest thing anyone could ever do. Tried to bring it East, but it ended badly. No more bike to work.
But... does that mean he would take up the whole space with his bike in the elevator, and force others to wait downstairs for the next one, only to carry it through the bullpen all sweaty and proud of himself and hang it on the wall next to his diplomas everyday? So that everyone can see how healthy he is? I'm beginning to think he might have some issues...
"Sometimes, there are no words, no clever quotes to neatly sum up what's happened that day...''
When on a case, Hotch is always silently observing, ordering others and staying seemingly unphased, much like you would expect from your stoic boss. BUT THEN the show gives him a minute to just talk like in season 4 finale and when he does speak his mind, when we actually get to learn the way he views things that surround him, it's such a rare treasure, a chance to gain his perspective.
And of course in these rare moments he lets his poetic side show, admitting he had always been looking for a deeper meaning to this job much like Gideon had, keeping his legacy in a way. He isn't much of a talker but when he finds the timing right, his soul shows through in every word. And you know they would often exchange their insight after a tough case on the jet, except Hotch doesn't really open up in these instances. I can't be the only one who got the impression that he tends to either shut down completely, or get the last say that ends the conversation before anyone elaborates any further. Hence why it felt so special to me, he didn't share that thought with the team, he didn't expect (or even want) them to understand, he challenged us to acknowledge his point of view there, and try to comprehend what drives him at the end of the day.
And people think his strength comes from being scary here and there! But to me he's the ultimate protector, almost like he decided to take on all the darkness that surround their job, to prevent anyone from having to ''stare down the abyss'' themselves for as long as he can. He decided to be the one that intimidates, the one that shouts or the one that people fear. But am I saying he was clever by doing so?
I've always appreciated how Hotch had stayed a very private person even towards us, viewers, throughout the show. It only made moments like this even more special, you can't help but absorb every piece of his mind he lets anyone have insight into.

So I listened to Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby because of your addition to the Hotch gifs and FUCK THAT HURT!! Although... I think I'm a big fan?? It was strangely soothing.... so thank youuu
No problem, and strangely soothing is the perfect description for this song. To me it has that "am I really supposed to be calm right now? " feeling to it. Idk, maybe it's stupid but I'm just picturing someone in total distress, all shaking, and then someone comes up to them and starts singing it but keeps their distance, and the song itself doesn't really help, it's more about the presence?
In other words yeah, the song reminds me of Hotch. What can I say, I have a lot of those!
the first we see of aaron hotchner <3
(my gifs!)
I just love seeing him being comfortable around other people, he never really got to experience that again, not after she was gone. He never let himself rest once she wasn't there.
*nothing's gonna hurt you baby by cigarettes after sex playing in the background*
tw: religion, child abuse
This is a ramble. Heads up.
There’s just something about Hotch’s knowledge of the Bible and religion that haunts me. Why does he know it so well? Why so intimately? Why is he always so level when speaking about it? There’s never any emotion behind those lines. They’re flat. Like he’s fighting to stay neutral. Like if he doesn’t, the floodgates will open and he won’t be able to stop himself from opening up. Why is he so detached whenever he references it?
Like everything points to him growing up in an incredibly conservative, religious small town where being different was a curse and they preached the fire and brimstone. Where they never spoke about forgiveness. Where they never let people repent, or atone, or mess up because they believed in perfection. Where children were terrified of the thoughts they couldn’t control and every threat involved references to hell.
Where a child telling their priest that sometimes their dad hits them, but other times he brings them ice cream is seen to be normal because children have to respect their parents, and it must be his fault that this is happening to him.
Like I just- yeah.
Glad to know others noticed that too! It's the way his voice gets so monotone whenever he's referencing anything religion-related. This is legit, he acts that way when he's detaching himself from the thing he's talking about.
I grew up in a small religious town myself, and the feeling of something sinister inside you never truly leaves you, no matter how ridiculous it may seem. I could see Hotch generally believing he needs to fit in at all cost, because once you're an outcast in your hometown you will always feel like a misfit, like you don't get to belong anywhere anymore. Him being well aware of how much of a mockery this religion that's supposed to connect all the people in town truly is, how much harm it brings makes perfect sense to me. Since he was raised in such environment, he can't really detach himself from the views that remain deep rooted in him after all these years.
I like this! This adds a new layer to his character.
hotch talking about sexuality is something that can be so personal,,,
So I’m rewatching Route 66 (09x05) and I never noticed that the license plate numbers in the dreams Hotch had during surgery were 509 905 which is the episode Haley died and then the current episode where Haley’s back.
Also Route 66 doesn’t have any opening quote! Even the very structure of the show got messed up without Hotch being present to keep things together and in the right order.
Another fun thing to think about: Hotch got stabbed in-between episodes (and seasons), but the Reaper surprised him in his apartment at the end of 4x26, which is the 91st episode of the whole series. The very same stab wounds reopened in episode 9x05, so the 191st episode of the whole run. They are exactly 100 episodes apart, when the 100th episode is about the most important moment in Hotch’s story. So, he kind of owns this number.

God’s Gonna Cut You Down
Hear me out: I have no idea what this is but I’ve got three thousand words of this shit and it just keeps coming so before I throw myself into this new project, I’m gonna let you guys dip your toes in and see if you guys like and then I’m going to keep going anyways but–
Anyways, stay tuned for my rendition of Hotch’s backstory:
November 2, 1971
Virginia in the fall finds itself choking on tourists ambling about wherever they can find a high spot to rest. Stopping to watch deer jump out from the underbrush or hear receding birds shrieking their discontent at being found. The mountains draw in lots of attention but they’re hard to miss from a distance and there’s something about woods that draw the curious dangerously close. Moths to the light, there’s something about hearing the woods call out that never makes people question things as much as they should. Never thinking to back away until it’s too late.
In a 50s Crosley station wagon, Aaron Hotchner is born silently. His father’s large hand over his still, pale chest as he makes no move to draw in a breath. It’s the woods calling his unnamed body– attempting to lure the baby away from the life that awaits him. In the woods, deep where there is no warmth or chills only comfort and ease. Where he’ll never know the sting of the palm urging his little lungs to work across his face. He’ll be safe from the monsters that await him in the future he doesn’t have to have if he just comes to the woods. To their safety and their love.
