Host Publications

Exciting news! For the first time Host Publications is represented at the Guadalajara International Book Fair.  Host writer & translator Dave Oliphant is journeying to Mexico with his son to represent Host Publications at the Independent Publishers Collective booth.

The bookfair started on Saturday 11/24/12 and Dave is there 11/26/12 through Wednesday 11/28/12 – the Fair’s “Professional” days.

We’re at booth number NN33  - if you are there, drop by and say hello to Dave and send us a picture!

We're heading over to our booth at the Texas Book Festival here in Austin to get set up for the weekend (October 27-28, 2012).

It should be a great weekend of books, writers, and readers.

If you are in Austin, Texas, stop by BookWoman bookstore at 5501 N. Lamar, suite A105 (Austin, TX 78751) at 7PM for what promises to be a great evening of poetry with Marcela Sulak, poet and translator of Bela-Wenda: Voices from the Heart of Africa. Marcela is making a rare trip home to Texas as she currently resides in Israel. Ms. Sulak will be reading from Bela-Wenda in addition to her newest book, Immigrant. 

Joining Ms. Sulak is Jenny Browne the poet and author of At Once and The Second Reason who will be reading her poetry. Ms. Browne teaches in San Antonio at Trinity University. 

Host's Bela-Wenda (by Mutombo Nkulu-N'Sengha, translated by Marcela Sulak) & Seven Views of the Same Landscape (by the late Esther Tusquets, translated by Barbara Ichiishi) were chosen as semi-finalists in the ALTA National Translation Award for 2012. 

This month, Barbara Ichiishi's translation of Seven Views of the Same Landscape moved on to the finalist stage! We're awaiting final results.

Congratulations again to Nicanor Parra! Parra was recently awarded the prestigious Pablo Neruda prize for poetry for 2012. Late last year, Parra earned the Cervantes Award for his work as well. 

Dave Oliphant's translation of Parra's After-Dinner Declarations (Host 2009) took top honors at the Texas Institute of Letters translation awards earlier this year.

Some of Host's books will be traveling to American Library Association in Anaheim, California June 21st - 26 with ForeWord Reviews.

Two Host titles are finalists for ForeWord's Book of the Year Awards (winners to be announced at ALA on June 23). Although we can't be there with them, we are sending our best wishes along with them to the show!

We're thrilled to report that The Dirty Goat was chosen to participate in CLMP's 13th Annual Magathon in New York City. Joe will be reading from The Dirty Goat 25 on Saturday June 16th from 4-6:30 in the NYPL DeWitt Wallace Periodicals Room in this program organized by the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP). 

If you are in New York, come by to hear Joe and representatives from about 20 other literary magazines read a short excerpt from their publications.

The DeWitt Wallace Periodical Room is located in Room 108 on the first floor of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library at 42nd and 5th Avenue. 

Dave Oliphant was named the winner of the Texas Institute of Letters' Soeurette Diehl Fraser Award for Best Translation of a Book for After-Dinner Declarations by Cervantes Award winner Nicanor Parra.

Host will be sponsoring a session at Austin Community College's Carnival ah! - a celebration of the Arts & Humanities April 11 & 12, 2012.

"The Art of Translating Great Writing" is to be held on Thursday April 12 at 2:30 on the Rio Grande stage in Austin, Texas.

Panelists will include Kurt Heinzelman (translator of Jean Follain's Demarcations), Dave Oliphant (translator of Nicanor Parra's After-Dinner Declarations), and Aaron Prevots (translator of Jaques Reda's Europes & Return to Calm).

Moderator is Dr. Lyman Grant, Dean of Arts & Humanities at Austin Community College.

Join us for what promises to be an intriguing discussion.

Just heard the news! Texas Institute of Letters (TIL) announced their literary contest finalists and Host Publications swept the category for Best Translation of a Book!

Finalists for the TIL Soeurette Diehl Fraser Award are:

James Hoggard (translator, Ashes in Love by Oscar Hahn)

Kurt Heinzelman (translator, Demarcations by Jean Follain)

Dave Oliphant (translator, After-Dinner Declations by Nicanor Parra)

Congratulations! Winners will be announced April 14.

The Miguel de Cervantes Prize is the Spanish-speaking world's most prestigious literary honor. Parra, a brilliant Chilean poet, is best known for using his work to demystify poetry and make it accessible to a wider audience.

Parra was born in 1914 in Chile to an artistically prolific family of performers, musicians, artists and writers. His father was a schoolteacher. After receiving his degree in mathematics and physics, Parra taught secondary school before continuing his studies in physics at Brown University and then cosmology at Oxford. He returned to Chile as a professor of physics at the University in Santiago.

Host is proud to have made After Dinner Declarations accessible to an English-speaking audience with our translation.
