The Stormlight Archive: Secret History
(video by nathanthecatlady)
for anyone else who was curious, according to @megasupernova888, the words are 不感症 (fukanshyoo, “sexual frigidity”) and 花粉症 (kafunshyoo, “hay fever”)
the first time I saw this I had my sound off, didnt see the text saying “japanese” at the beginning, and thought this entire thing was a shitpost
i have a weird appreciation for Baroque artists, in particular Francois Boucher and Peter Paul Rubens, for depicting the human body in lush detail at a time that predates the standards for bodies to be thin and airbrushed with no wrinkles or cellulite
it’s just really interesting to me
so many the things women are taught to hate about their bodies—pudgy bellies, fat rolls, double chins, and cellulite—used to be ideals of beauty shown in depictions of goddesses
Lots of fatphobes making claims they haven’t researched in the notes.
“Paintings from that era only depicted the wealthy!” That is…just false? “Genre” painting, or paintings showing scenes of everyday life and normal people, was becoming a huge Thing in the Baroque period.
Not all paintings are commissioned portraits of wealthy people? ????
“This was an unattainable beauty standard at the time!” Really?
This is an unattainable beauty standard?
These women aren’t fat. They just have wrinkles, cellulite, squishy bellies and sagging skin, and you associate those things with being “fat” and reason that any person who looks like this has access to a huge excess of rich food.
Now on to the main thing… “No one actually looked like that except the wealthy in the 1600’s!”
Fortunately, Baroque artists did in fact capture average people in their paintings. Such as Albrecht Durer, who drew this, entitled “Smiling Peasant Girl”
And these drawings, also depicting everyday women:
None of these women are thin according to our standards. They’re just regular people.
Here’s a “genre” painting by David Teniers the Younger
This is an everyday life scene of people who are not particularly rich. We don’t have these eroticized nudes of peasant women, but it’s clear enough that this woman has similar features to the above women.
Not to mention that artists did in fact depict women in a non-idealized way
This is a painting by David Ryckaert and it’s my favorite thing in the world right now. Look at that smile. The warmth. The poor kitty wrapped up burrito style.
The same guy also painted this (not relevant, just something you need to see)
LOOK. HE’S TEACHING THE DOG TO SHAKE. LOOK. LOOK
I’m pretty fond of Gerard von Honthorst’s work as well
By the way, it’s generally agreed that the women in the paintings in the OP are largely based on the artists’ wives.
Albrecht Durer also drew his wife
and it makes me soft.
I know this thread is long already but I need you to know that Albrecht Durer looked like this
A pair of girls deliver ice in lower Manhattan, New York City, 1918 (colorized)

I feel the strong urge to kiss whoever wrote this.
Teacher to me (photographer): this is Mohammed.
Me: and last name?
Teacher: -shrug- his name is Mohammed, hes the only Mohammed at this school.
Mohammed: -is in preschool, doesnt know his last name-
Me: -looks up Mohammed in system- Nadir?
Teacher: sure, yeah. Sounds right.
Me: this will come back to bite me later.
After merging my camera data with another photographer: there's two Mohammed Nadirs. -goes to talk it out with secretary-
Me: -shows two photos- which of these kids is Mohammed?
Secretary: -points to the one I did not shoot- that's Mohammed.
Me: I was told this one was Mohammed. -points to my student-
Secretary: well, theres only one Mohammed.
Secretary takes me to the break room to chat with two teachers.
Me: can one of you tell me which one is Mohammed?
Teacher A points to my student.
Teacher B points to not my student.
Both: that's Mohammed.
Teacher B says that her Mohammed is in her class and is definitely Mohammed Nadir.
Me: so who is Mystery Mohammed?
Teachers Aide walks by: who are you trying to find?
Me: -turns laptop around- can you identify this child?
Teachers Aide: oh! That's Mohammed!
So theres two Mohammeds. Secretary cant find data for Mystery Mohammed. No one can find his name. All we know is he's in preschool.
Me: okay! Can you direct me to the teacher?
Teachers Aide: sure.
I have my laptop open to the photo as I'm walking down the hall, updating data as we go looking for this kid. Checking hairstyles and clothes in vase we see him in the hall. Buffalo check shirt. Hi-top fade. Secretary is freaking out a little that she lost all data for entire student.
We pass the library.
A class is exiting.
I see the buffalo check shirt. I see the hi-top fade. Kid is wearing a mask.
Teachers aide taps him.
Me: is this you?
Child: no, that's Mohammed.
Identical child is Mohammed's cousin. They dressed alike for picture day because their mothers thought it would be cute.
Cousin: I dont know his last name. His mom never told me.
Teachers aide leads me to classroom where we see...
MOHAMMED!
Me: Hi, hello Mrs preschool teacher. I need to know the name of this child-
Teacher: that's Moham-
Me: Mohammed, yes. We gathered. What's his LAST name?
Teacher:
Teacher: Mohammed, what's your last name?
Mohammed: -stares at the wall, then points to a picture of a duck-
Teacher: his last name is not 'duck.' I'll go look it up for you.
Five minutes later and the reason we couldn't find his name was because he spells it MUHammad. All of this because the teacher swore he was the only kid in the school with the most common name in the world.
End scene, exit left pursued by a migraine.
This sounds like the EXACT flavor of bullshit literally everyone I know whos' had to deal with the education system in Ohio has told me about. Honestly I'm just glad it didn't escalate to a fistfight in the parking lot somehow.
@libraford just to clarify, were these cousins' names Mohammed and Muhammed? Or did the cousin have a totally different name?
Cousin has an entirely different name.
Can you get a cute picture of the cousins together for their families, because that does sound adorable
also do you mean to say that the teachers couldn’t tell the difference between a preschooler and a kindergartner
Please say they at least corrected the spelling of Muhammad’s name in their files
… was Mohammed Nadir a completely different, third child, if his name came up in the system but Muhammad’s did not
We could upon request, but we cant publish it because its one photo per child for the yearbook.
The teachers could tell approximately what age they were, we just straight up couldn't figure out whose class he was in because when we merge data it messes up the class name.
Both students were in the system correctly, but everyone swore that there was only one Mohammed/Muhammed at this school. There was just never any reason to put the names side by side until this afternoon.
Why is “there’s only one Mohammed at this school” a datapoint that everyone seems so invested in?

one of my favourite ever lion studies was looking at masculinized females in botswana, and one of the study lionesses was called SaF05
SaF05 had a mostly complete light mane, mated with both males and females, roared and scent-marked in a fashion associated with males, however acted socially as a female when it came to hunting and patrolling
revolutionary
Did they name the lion Sapho on purpose?
"Please state your name and the subject of your experience."
"Into that? You're joking."
[ID/ digital colour drawing of Melanie King, portrayed as a young white woman with dark shoulder-length hair that is died blue at the bottom. She has a nose ring and gauge earrings and is wearing a white 'Ghost Hunt UK' tank top, of which the 'o' in ghost is replaced by a simple drawing of a ghost. Her expression is hard and somewhat sceptical.]

Shangqi and friends + text posts (and other stuff) pt4 (masterlist)
little spoon!Leg for @loveandslander
I love the concept of elf-sleep and true-sleep. What if elves just fuckin………conk out for 18 hours and wake up forgetting what year it is when they true-sleep
hot take all elves ugly-sleep
Because we know that Legolas went days without sleep feelin’ spry as ever, I see this and I raise you 48 hours when they true-sleep
@what-your-elf-eyes-see Not only am I into this, I’m obsessed with this. What if the reason why elves don’t really like to true-sleep is because they’re basically comatose and it makes them super vulnerable?
It takes him a minute to get started back up again, he’ll get there.
