      ‘yes. perhaps we’ll even give the elves a run for their money – we’ll see.’

      there is a certain amount of pride which a hobbit would have in his gardens, after all. he had no idea as to the richness of the greens of mirkwood, given the current conditions, but he had certainty in the shire’s ways even if he didn’t in the people who resided there. he moves, leaning against his lover and propping his chin up on the other’s shoulder. ‘you realize this means that we’ll be eating far more vegetation, don’t you?’

      a little smirk curls his lips and golden eyes peer up at the other, brows rising in amusement. ‘hopefully you’ll enjoy the recipes.’

“ you’ve always said we need more green in our diets. ”

      ‘darling!’

      the sun shines down upon the hobbit and casts an ethereal shade of gold about him, as if a halo appeared in the midst of the daylight. yet bright eyes are cast upon the king as bilbo whips his head around, suddenly thrilled to excitement as he bounces on the balls of his feet. he beckons the other over, through throngs of dwarves he is still teaching to weave the earth.

      ‘look here. it’s as i’ve said – the plants are growing back. if this keeps up, we’ll have more than enough for food storage and then some.’

within the halls of Erebor the King had his own duties, his own choices and fairly obvious tasks to be appointed between guilds and their staff. everyday was a mess of meetings, papers, observing and teaching. but always he will make the time for Bilbo and the Consort’s fantastic ability to gain the will and trust of those around him. the grounds were being tended to and Thorin is careful as he weaves past the newly appointed farmers, each one giving respectful bow as their King approached. 

      “ Hmm, yeah, and you haven’t indulged that in a while, eh? “ He does so enjoy watching Thorin flirt his way through life – it’s a concept that is less foreign to him than his elder counterpart, but which they have adapted to so readily that Beckett cannot help but be thrilled by it. No one ever gets to see this side of Thorin Oakes – not unless they’re looking closely and he remains in proximity, but he does so adore getting to keep such knowledge to himself otherwise. Learning about his lover and his quirks had always been one of his favorite pastimes. “ Are you sure you don’t want me to help with the expenses? We’re going to be here a while yet. “

     Three weeks, if he recalls correctly. Three weeks of uninhibited time together to enjoy each other’s presence and truly explore Paris in the way they had always wanted to. Beck is grateful for the thought; he was always begging to go on longer or more frequent trips just to balance out their workload and keep away the stress, but he loved spoiling Thorin too. After all, it wasn’t as if either of them hurt for the funds, and he would hate to think how much this entire trip would cost him. Hell, the hotel room alone had likely put a dent in their monthly budget.

     But rather than voice these thoughts, the younger man bites into his cheek and focuses on the tart. He had asked because he didn’t want Thorin to think he would simply be complacent about it, but if that was the way that his lover wanted to treat him, then he would simply have to come up with a way to reciprocate in other ways. Instead the blond smiles, glancing around their table while he nibbles on the rest of his treats. The prospect of trying something new every day very tellingly excited him, enough for that spark to return readily to his eyes. “ Yeah! I’d love that. I did like this spot, but I’m sure there are other gems around the area too, right? We’ll just have to keep looking. But if we ever came back, I definitely want to order more crepes. “

      “You can help with things you want to buy, if that pleases you. But food and lodging.. any tours or events we end up going to, let me treat. This whole trip was my gift to you, remember? We’ve been together for a year now. A wonderful, perfect year I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.”

     ‘ yeah, you’re right. I’d probably punch them in the face. anyway – I wouldn’t be surprised if they were related, but I doubt he has that kind of interest in me. seems to me he has another kind of stick up his ass, right? ‘ 

      ❝ What? Absolutely not. I’m afraid to see the bill for this – and you’d be fuller if you actually, you know, ate the rest of your half. ❞ Golden eyes follow the motion of the knife, watching Thorin cut up the rest of the tart and wondering if the man would be able to stomach something so sweet. Perhaps not – it could be a mercy on him, eating the rest of it.  But Beckett also wanted him to be able to experience the wonders of the food which they were sampling. After all, he could certainly make better eggs than these; and certainly he could attempt the eggs and tart, but it was best to enjoy things like this together while they could.

     Napkin lifted to his lips, the younger man chuckles and glances between the food and his companion. He knows full well that he’d have eaten more than this were he fully feeling himself, but at the very least this was a good start. He could stop for a few more snacks, and be well off during lunch and dinner if so necessary. What mattered more to him was the way Thorin looked at him now; the way the happiness seemed to shine in his eyes, or the knowing look he was wearing even as Beckett picked his fork back up. 

      ❝ —- But do, yeah. Let’s order a bit more coffee. And maybe to make up for the plain eggs we can have fondue later. Sound good? ❞ He was now craving the caffeine kick which the coffee would give him and had finished his first serving. ❝ Tastes more like it’s the bean rather than the press. But I do appreciate the lack of acidity. ❞

       “I want you to promise me one thing. For the remainder of the trip don’t worry about the cost of things. I want to spoil you and spoil you I will. I’ve got the funds, let me. And I’ll eat enough, I always do.” Granted he could have had more of the tart, but he really can’t seem to force himself to ingest more sweets. It was his own constitution he was concerned for, it tended to upset his stomach unless he had something more bitter to counteract. Thorin was plenty full for the moment. He needed the energy to explore the city and knew he had enough.. all he needed now was to tone down the excitement which ran rampart in his form. 

      “Fondue. I’m perfectly fine with that. Means I can feed you things. You know how much I enjoy that.” Subtle flirt. Thorin only gets like this when his mood is elevated, which when he is able to spend these times with Beckett, its through the roof. In some ways he finds it almost frustrating how Beck’s very proximity could bring it out of him, but not in a negative way. He wishes he could be this cheerful, this emotionally connected at all times.
