Emily Powell grew up as the second child of Louise and Brad Powell in Carroll County. Always a bright and curious kid, Emily quickly discovered the endless world of the internet and immediately felt like she could conquer it all. From making online friends to playing games and obsessing over memes, she found herself immersed in the digital world. She admired people who made careers out of their online lives—especially those on YouTube—and dreamed of finding her own way to make a name for herself.
But Emily wasn’t interested in vlogging about her everyday life. To her, it felt too ordinary for a spotlight. It wasn’t until she enrolled at MIT that she stumbled upon something that really clicked: streaming. The idea of sharing her gaming experiences with others, interacting with people who had similar interests, felt like the perfect outlet for her creativity.
After graduating, Emily landed a job at Google, working in programming. She moved back to Carroll County and threw herself into her career, finding success and stability. But over time, what once felt like a dream job became just another routine. The spark of creativity that once drove her seemed to fade in the monotony of corporate life.
That's when she rediscovered streaming—this time, on Twitch. Streaming quickly became her escape, bringing joy and excitement back into her life. Still, the thought of quitting her high-paying job to pursue her passion full-time gives her pause. Emily is torn between the security of her steady job and the pull of doing what she truly loves, hoping one day she’ll find the courage to take the leap.

He didn't know why but he felt like it was the hardest to tell Emily. She had been the one to clock Ashton so early on, pining, yearning, teasing him for staring too long. She felt like their number one supporter before they were ever a thing, and now he felt like he was letting her down most of all. He had been successfully breaking the bad news to his friends, because March was gone and guess the bearer of bad news responsibility fell on Ash. It's taken more of a toll than he thought, having to tell people, explain why (when he barely understood why himself), reassure people that he was okay (he wasn't okay). But it's getting easier day by day. Hopefully easy enough to bite the bullet today.
They simply sat by the beach, taking some quiet time for themselves from their hectic lives, chatting up with an important friend of his. Ash tried not to think about the break up, instead meeting Emily with a smile, eyes no longer puffy from crying, mental headspace back on the summer camp, and now he just wanted to hear about her life instead. "How's work been? I know Google's been hectic right, haven't seen you stream in awhile," Ash asked, toes digging into the cold sand underneath.
emily was glad ashton had texted her to hang out. it had been a minute since they’d actually seen each other, and between both of their schedules, finding time had started to feel harder than it should. she’d been helping nathan plan their trip to greece, work had been hinting at a promotion, and her brain had been running in about seventeen different directions at once, but ashton wanted to catch up, so emily made time. that was what friends did.
“then you’re not paying attention, ash,” she teased, smiling over at him. “i stream at least once a week. you’ve just been busy.” her flip-flops were kicked off in the sand beside her, her arms wrapped around her knees as she looked out at the water. the breeze helped a little. so did sitting next to someone who didn’t need her to have everything figured out. “but google has been… something,” she admitted with a small shrug. “they want to promote me, but i don’t know if i want the job.”
emily rested her chin on her knees, frowning out at the waves. “i’d have to move to san francisco. and nathan and i’s life is here.” she paused, then corrected herself with a faint grimace. “our life is here. i don’t want to uproot us for something i’m not even sure i want.” her fingers absently traced little lines in the sand. “i think i’m just tired of being away from home for a week at a time.” tired of hotel rooms, car commutes, video calls, missing nathan’s face in person. tired of pretending ambition always had to mean leaving. she glanced back at ashton, pushing the heaviness aside with a small smile. “what about you? summer camp starts soon, right?”
With two Freedom-whatevers in hand, Fitzroy carefully went down the stairs to the lower deck, where Emily had advised him to meet up. Though, as he had told her, his social battery was running low this evening, he still wouldn't pass up a few moments to hang out with her.
Spotting the familiar head of blonde, he came forward with a grin and one of the drinks held aloft for her. "I believe you ordered a drink, miss?" Fitz teased, mock-playing as if he was nothing but one of the wait staff bringing her things.
emily’s eyes lit up when she spotted fitz and then she giggled at the drink in his hand. “i did, kind sir. thank you.” she gave him a dramatic little curtsy before straightening and taking the glass from him. “you’re the best.” after a sip, she leaned in to hug him with the arm not currently responsible for alcohol, her cheeks warm from the drinks she’d already had. “come, come,” she said brightly, giving his arm a tug. “have you gotten the tour yet? because this place is ridiculous, fitz. in a good way.” her face was flushed, but her smile was wide and easy as she looked up at him, delighted by all of it — the lights, the water, the absurd luxury of being on a yacht like this with people she loved. “we could go all the way to spain in this.”
what was the perfect amount of kitchens? maybe two, although sometimes when everyone was in the house, three kitchens would have been a nice amount of numbers. so she could make her ramen in peace. but, they were still in this first kitchen, so maybe one really was the best.
hearing her name, ruby spun around, holding boxes of uncooked pasta that had been in the cabinet she was searching. one of them teetered and the crashed to the floor with a strange cracking sound. what emily was holding would be a much better snack. she dropped all the pasta then, as though that would hide it from being what she was going to suggest.
"too bad there are no marshmallows." she put on her scientist hat, trying to think of what nathan would do in this situation. the cookies were a really good start to a really good idea, she just had to think of the next piece of the puzzle. "that'd be a good sandwich."
emily’s eyes lit up the second ruby suggested marshmallows. she was right. that would be an incredible sandwich. cookies with a marshmallow in the middle? perfect. inspired. yacht cuisine at its finest. “there has to be some,” emily said, immediately turning back to the cabinet with renewed purpose. “how could they be on a ship without marshmallows?” there were plenty of other snacks, but now that ruby had said marshmallow, it was the only thing emily could think about. she dug through the cabinet again, pulling out another bag of chips, then a package of twizzlers.
“oh, we definitely found the junk food cabinet,” she announced, pleased with herself. then she glanced over her shoulder, suddenly serious. “ruby, check the freezer for ice cream.”

they weren't breaking in or anything, they were guests of the big boat. or guests of guests of the big boat in her case, which still left most of the doors unlocked. she opened cabinets, shutting them quietly when they revealed nothing but glassware and different bottles she couldn't pronounce. "every kitchen?" she looked around the big room they were already in, wondering if it counted as one or two kitchens already.
"are there too many?" she didn't want to get lost on the boat. it seemed pretty obvious that you could get tripped here and never be allowed to leave if you were left alone. splitting up seemed like the easiest way to cause this issue, she didn't want that. "what about other cookies?"
did emily say kitchens, plural? if she had, she had absolutely no memory of it. so when ruby repeated it back, emily only nodded like that made perfect sense. this was the only kitchen. the snacks had to be here somewhere. she could feel it. “too many kitchens? i don’t think so,” emily said, opening another cabinet with the confidence of a woman on a very important mission. “i think there is the perfect amount.” there was one kitchen. why did she keep making it sound like there were several? she didn’t notice, too focused on the terrible mystery of where rich people hid their normal food.
another cabinet. nothing. another. still nothing. “honestly, any cookie will do at this point,” she muttered, brow furrowing as she let out a dramatic breath. “where do they keep their food in this place?” she checked two more cabinets with growing frustration before finally opening the last one. her face lit up. “jackpot, ruby!” emily grabbed a pack of chips ahoy! and spun around with a triumphant grin. in her best pirate accent stated, “we have treasure.”
emily always knew what to do in these situations: find the food. there was a lot of red food, and white food. but there weren’t any oreo colored foods that she could find. she also wasn’t looking very hard, because even though these were emily’s very best friends, she wasn’t like that close yet. maybe not like go through all their cabinets close.
“do they eat oreos?” she was thoughtful, trying to visualize either ingrid or joel with a processed cookie in their hand. it didn’t fit, but again, emily always knew more than she did. “or only like french food?”
emily opened another cabinet and finally found several bags of chips. no oreos, but the chips would do for now. she grabbed two and tucked them against her chest. “ingrid does,” she said. “i’m not so sure about joel, considering he nearly broke out in hives the one time i suggested we grab mcdonald’s.” she rolled her eyes playfully at ruby before turning back to the cabinets. “but joel loves ingrid, so there has to be junk food hidden somewhere on this ship.” emily opened another door with renewed determination. “we’ll check every kitchen if we have to.”
emily approached nathan with a drink in each hand, wearing the kind of grin that suggested she had already decided this was a good idea. “i’m not entirely sure what’s in this,” she admitted, holding one out to him, “but joel is playing bartender, and he claims it’s the best thing he’s ever made.” she shrugged, like that was enough qualification. “and i feel like a crew is supposed to trust their captain, so on three, we drink. if we’ve been poisoned, at least we’ll die together.” emily lifted her glass toward his, eyes bright with amusement. “one, two, three.”
she took a generous sip, then paused, considering it with surprising seriousness. “huh.” her nose scrunched slightly. “more pineapple than i was expecting, but honestly? not terrible.”
“okay, i know ingrid and joel have real people snacks hidden somewhere.” emily was already halfway into the yacht’s kitchen, ruby in tow on a mission she had apparently decided required no explanation. joel and ingrid had stocked the place with expensive cheeses, fancy little crackers, and things emily was sure came with words she couldn’t pronounce, but she was a little drunk and wanted doritos. something aggressively orange. something that left evidence on her fingertips.
she had abandoned nathan up on the deck with the vague hope that he and joel were making friends before grabbing ruby by the arm and steering her below. emily started opening cabinets with increasing determination. “you know what sounds so good right now?” she asked, turning toward ruby with the seriousness of someone about to share a life-changing revelation. “oreos.”

Her reassurance was sweet, and Zach couldn't stay in that strange state when he knew she believed their stream would be a success. He couldn't have asked for a better introduction for his new feature in the game. If anything went wrong, he'd be able to fix the issue almost in real time – which obviously wouldn't influence their gameplay in any way, but at least it would be taken care of.
Zach just smiled widely and waited for Emily to do exactly what she said she would. That's when the chat erupted; cheerful and very Emu-themed, it all made the smile stay on his face for a little longer, one hundred percent genuine. Even though public speaking, presentations, and interviews all counted as his own personal hell, the man had learned to convince himself that it was just another form of yapping about what he loved, and was he good at that!
"While I wouldn't be surprised if some decide to leave and come back for something merrier, I really hope that most of you will stay," he started jokingly, when it was his turn to speak. He sort of opened his mouth before he realized how fast his heart was beating, so the words just kept flowing. "We're jumping into the world of Outlast, where it's all about survival and pushing yourself to your limits. And while the feeling of isolation plays a huge role in these games, I've taken up on proving y'all that it'll be just as scary when you can play with your friend. Em and I are teaming up and... we'll try to outlast whatever the game will throw at us today, right?"
emily looked over at zach beside her, grinning as he finished his intro, before turning back toward the camera with wide, dramatic eyes. “right,” she said, nodding seriously. “we’re going to try to outlast it. emphasis on try, because i need everyone here to understand that i am brave in theory and deeply annoying in practice.” chat immediately started moving faster, and emily pointed at the screen. “do not start with me, congregation. i know you’re all here hoping i scream so loud zach regrets being in the same room as me.” she glanced back at him, smile bright and teasing. “which is fair, honestly.”
then she settled her hands on the keyboard and mouse, taking an exaggerated steadying breath. “but before we start getting emotionally hunted for sport, zach has put a stupid amount of work into this, so everybody be nice to him. ask him cool game questions. hype him up. and if something tries to murder me in the dark, blame him directly.” emily leaned a little closer to her mic, dropping her voice into her streamer voice. “alright, chat. headphones on, lights off if you’re feeling brave, emu bless…” she glanced at zach one more time, eyes sparkling. “let’s see if friendship survives outlast.” then the game started.

Ocean wondered which would be worse: Emily yelling at him or being kind when he didn't deserve it. Pretty quickly, he decided it would be worse if she yelled, but he didn't think he deserved such easy forgiveness. Whether or not he had meant to, he'd insulted her friends. Yes, it had been an accident, but even so. "I need to choose my words better," he told the woman. "I try to, but I'm not really an eloquent guy. But...for what it's worth, I'm sorry, even if I didn't mean to insult them." And Ocean truly meant that. When Emily apologized, Ocean shook his head, waving it off. "You were just defending the people you care about. I would have done the same thing." Ocean might hate confrontation, and he might be rather meek, but he would always stand up for the people he loved. They meant everything to him. Looking at Emily cautiously, as if he still couldn't quite trust she wouldn't snap again, Ocean asked, "Are you okay now? Less stressed, I mean?"
When he heard Emily's remark, Ocean actually laughed, which surprised him. "A wasted dessert really is a tragedy," he agreed with a grin. Ocean was an avowed dessert lover. And then he laughed again at her next comment, immediately replying, "Well...I'm awkward." He thought that was clear already, but he said it anyway. "I probably wouldn't have run if I'd seen a ghost," Ocean admitted. "Most of them are harmless, and the ones who aren't, well...running wouldn't do much good." Although he chuckled, Ocean wasn't kidding. "I would have run from a murderer though, but I doubt they'd strike on a busy street during the day." Ocean worried he was going to offend Emily with his jokes, so he stopped laughing, offering what he hoped was a friendly smile.
Shaking his head, Ocean protested, "It's okay, you really don't have to." But then his stomach grumbled, and he knew it was pretty clear how hungry he was. "Yeah, alright," he agreed. "But I'm going to pay. It's not your fault I dropped it." The pair began walking back in that direction, and Ocean didn't want the silence to get awkward, so he asked, "What's your favorite ice cream flavor?" He felt like you could tell a lot about a person by how they answered.
emily’s expression softened as ocean explained, the guilt settling in now that she wasn’t running on adrenaline and cupcake preservation instincts. “yeah,” she said gently, “i get what you mean now. formal versus… commune casual.” she gave him a small, apologetic smile. “i am less stressed now. it wasn't even my wedding and it stressed me out. can you actually think what will happen if i ever get married," she laughed.
her brows lifted when he admitted he was awkward, and she laughed despite herself. “okay, well, points for self-awareness.” then, at the ghost comment, she stared at him for a beat. “you know what? i’m not even going to unpack that right now.”
emily’s smile widened. “uh-huh. sure. you’re paying.” she started walking back toward the ice cream with him, still holding her own dessert like a prize she had bravely rescued from danger. “my favorite ice cream flavor is probably cookie dough,” she said. “or mint chocolate chip if i’m feeling controversial.” she glanced over at him, amused. “and you? please don’t say something unsettling like black licorice.”
