Sitora wanted to stay forever, to feel the reassuring warmth of Raelynn’s touch, to cocoon themselves in their room, where time dilated and sleep didn’t matter, where fears and secrets too terrible to utter in the outside world were whispered under bed sheets. She wanted to count back the days, when all they thought about was training and homework, the easy camaraderie of tackling difficult classes together and defeating Trix’s slights. She wanted to wish away the hurt on Raelynn’s face now, brush tears from her cheek and make her laugh, make her give her one of those sunshine smiles that began in her eyes. But she had to go, and she had to do it before her tears fell too. 

The voices raised in volume briefly, and Clara could only just make out the words ‘search’ and ‘fugitive’. But after a short while, the chatter vanished, and the cellar and the rooms above it were silent. She looked at Jess, neither of them brave enough to speak. Then, a loud thud punched through the silence, and a single pair of footsteps shook the floor of the room above them. 

‘Girls?’ called a voice.
