hollis had a pretty regular childhood. his parents worked a lot, so he fell into the older brother role with ease, making sure miriam and deaton always did their homework on time, had enough to eat. he was only a year older than deaton, six on miriam, but as they got older he continued to be protective of them. life was pretty decent. he had friends, he did well enough in school, he was on the newspaper committee which was his pride and joy. he liked bringing awareness to current events, spreading honesty, and one day he swore he'd be a published author. then there was the incident with chris. someone he considered a friend, and he froze. he didn't run to the police. he didn't tell a teacher. it was the shock of it all. he was a man of truth, bragged about bringing honesty to his classmates in his writing. then, the so-called man of truth was faced with a dilemma. because it wasn't just him, and it wasn't even just his friends that were there that night. deaton was there, too. what mattered the most, protecting the people he loved or telling a grieving family what happened to the one they loved? in the end, hollis put his younger brother first. he didn't know what would happen to any of them when the cover up came out, none of them did. and no one else seemed ready to come forward either. so he kept his lips shut, and he's reveled in his guilt ever since. he hasn't left town. he can't. his sister moved away the day before she turned nineteen. his brother left before that, shortly after graduation, and he cut all ties with his hometown. including hollis. it's been too long now to come forward, even if deaton is too far away to be pulled back in. the truth still has to remain under lock and key. he has all but given up his dreams on writing, given up writing in general, spending his days working and his nights drinking to forget. but after what all of them did, after the message that was posted... he has to see it through to the end. the memories always come back. for him, there's no way out.
