             ❛     seriously,  a  travesty  !     ❜        luciana  replied.  although,  she  had  a  better  sense  of  her  friend  to  know  that  zahra  wasn't  as  invested  in  the  chair - o - planes.  luciana  was  still  a  bit  detached  from  everything  going  on.  her  brain  putting  up  the  𝐃𝐄𝐅𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐒  to  try  and  protect  herself.         (      to  continue  living  in  her  own  delusion.     )        something  the  two  best  friends  may  have  reached  a  bit  of  common  ground  on.  spiraling  in  their  own  delusions  or  twisted  truths  to  try  and  either  protect  themselves  or  try  and  𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐃  something  in  their  lives.        ❛     it's  a  classic,  a  real  cash  grab.     ❜         moving  closer  to  the  other  girl,  luciana  looped  her  arm  with  zahra's,  dropping  her  head  to  rest  on  her  shoulder.         ❛     take  a  little  break  from  face  painting  and  come  walk  around  with  me  a  little  ?     ❜        she  asked,  glancing  over  at  the  girl.  knowing  that  it  couldn't  have  been  helping  to  stand  there  staring  at  chris  wilder's  old  carnival  work  spot.

          luciana  hadn't  planned  on  staying  in  town  for  longer  than  the  disastrous  reunion  but  she  also  𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐍'𝐓  completely  against  it.  she  wasn't  trying  to  run  away  from  anything.  if  anything,  luciana  had  detached  herself  from  everything  going  on.  so  much  so,  that  she  𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃𝐍'𝐓  fully  process  everything  they  were  going  through.  the real  reasons  she  was  stuck  in  lincoln  city.         ⏤        nevertheless,          (     here  they  all  were.     )         a  smile  pulling  at  the  corners  of  her  lips  as  she  looked  over  at  the  male.        ❛      it's  like  we're  kids  again.  carnival  rides  and  cotton  candy  at  our  fingertips.     ❜        luciana  said  with  a  smile,  a  small  scrunch  of  her  nose  to  follow.        ❛     so,  what  do  you  say  ?  want  some  cotton  candy  ?  an  ice  cream  ?  it's  on  me.     ❜

"  won't  you  go  on  one  ride  with  me  ?  i  know  that  you  want  to  .  "  

          ❛     what  do  you  want,  nick  ?     ❜        she  asked  ,  brown  eyes  meeting  his.  sure  ,  the  answer  to  that  question  was  that  he  wanted  to  ride  a  ride  with  her  but  luciana  knew  better.  or  at  least,  that  was  all  the  credit  she  could  give  nick.  she  thought  there  𝐇𝐀𝐃  to  be  something  going  on  in  the  males  head  for  him  to  quote,  unquote          (      waste     )         his  time  on  her.        ❛     couldn't  find  anyone  better  to  pass  some  time  with  ?     ❜

             being  back  and  having  zahra  in  person  ,  it  really  did  make  a  difference  .  there  was  𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆  better  than  spending  every  waking  moment  with  the  girl  .  both  of  them  crossing  their  arms  and  pouting  whenever  luciana  had  to  leave  again  .  as  much  as  she  wanted  to  𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐘  in  lincoln  city  with  her  best  friend  . . .  she  had  a  life  in  new  york  .  she  had  built  a  career  for  herself  .  that  being  said  ,  the  certain  someone  luci  knew  zahra  was  talking  about  was  someone  she  had  decided  to  drop  her  life  in  new  york  for  and  stay  in  lincoln  city  .  that  was  until  it  came  to  a  sad  and  heartbreaking  close  .  a  small  sigh  fell  from  the  girls  lips  as  she  looked  at  zahra  .          ❛     how  is  he  ?  have  you  spoken  to  him  ?     ❜         luci  asked  ,  it  being  𝐎𝐁𝐕𝐈𝐎𝐔𝐒  that  she  still  cared  deeply  about  the  male  in  question  .          ❛      i  don't  know  ?  he  can't  be  that  bad  right  ?  i  mean  ,  michael  .     ❜          she  asked  ,  switching  subjects  .          ❛      never - mind  boys  ,  how  are  you  ?  with  everything  going  on  ,  are  you  okay  ?     ❜           or  as  okay  as  any  of  the  class  of  2014  could  be  .

            in  reality  ,  luciana  𝐇𝐀𝐃𝐍'𝐓  moved  on  from  hollis  .  he  had  been  her  most  stable  relationship  .  something  so  real  ,  it  made  her  heart  ache  .  he  wasn't  just  a  fling  or  someone  that  used  her  and  spit  her  back  out  .  there  wasn't  a  deep  seeded  toxic - ness  to  their  relationship  . . .  they  were  simply  in  love  . . .  but  just  like  that  𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆  came  crashing  down  beneath  their  feet  .  as  hard  as  luciana  tried  to  hold  their  relationship  together  ,  she  couldn't  .  her  actually  being  the  one  to  come  to  the  conclusion  that  they  had  to  break  up  and  she  had  to  go  back  to  her  life  in  new  york  .  that  being  said  ,  it  didn't  make  it  any  easier  seeing  him  .  it  didn't  make  it  any  easier  getting  over  him  ,          (       obviously  .     )         because  look  at  her  now  . . .  not  over  him  in  even  the  slightest  of  ways  .  instead  ,  convincing  herself  that  she  was  𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐍𝐓  to  live  in  her  heartbreak  when  it  came  to  hollis  gibbs  .         ❛      it  is  and⏤     ❜        she  began  ,  eyes  darting  up  at  him  .        ❛      are  you  okay  ?  with  everything  going  on  ?     ❜         not  that  she  believed  he'd  open  up  to  her  about  how  he  was  feeling  .  knowing  hollis  had  a  difficult  time  when  it  came  to  the  𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐍  he  was  holding  onto  .        ❛      great  ,  i've  been  great  .     ❜         she  answered  a  little  too  quickly  .  maybe  in  a  way  to  𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄  herself  .  the  words  that  were  followed  by  a  soft  smile  as  she  looked  down  at  the  ground  before  looking  at  him  once  again  .         ❛      would  it  be  weird  if  i  asked  for  a  hug  ?     ❜

vincent atwood swore that there would never be a day that went by in his life that he didn't think about his SUCCESSES. he wasn't one to wallow in self-pity, or criticize himself, mainly because he thought he was practically untouchable but . . . primarily because, his life was filled with so many distractions that came as a direct result of his victories that he didn't have TIME to do any of those things. being back in his hometown, back where his roots had at one point in time been planted, now vincent had too much time. way too much time. jogging down the sidewalk, vincent pushed his weight into his feet, his teeshirt twisted and slung across his shoulders like a sweat rag, music blasting in his ears as his heart pounded so hard he could feel its pulse on his tongue. vincent was trying to find that distraction, that quiet — the inability to see his wrongs over his rights, but with everything about chris coming to the surface, it was natural for a man to panic that secrets he had kept trapped behind a pearly smile with lock and key were now about to be forced from him ( not if he could help it. he'd take as many of his hidden truths to his grave as he could ) . . . a familiar figure came into his peripheral, capturing his attention, and vince squinted at them, bringing his run to a slow jog. luciana. . . . huh. pulling off his headset to rest around his neck, vincent cocked his head at her, catching his breath as he put his hands on bare hips, torso gleaming with a thin veil of sweat.   ❛  huh ??  ❜ he inquired, cocking his head, looking between her and her car. ohhhh.   ❛ shit, luci. . . you ?? being desperate ?? some things really never change. ❜ shaking his head, vince moved from the sidewalk towards her, dragging the back of his hand across his forehead;   ❛ sure, princess, i can help you. you got a spare, right ?? ❜

            most  would  probably  find  vince's  comment  a  little  offensive  .  being  called  desperate  wasn't  exactly  what  𝐀𝐍𝐘𝐎𝐍𝐄  wanted  to  hear  about  themselves  .  but  luci  . . .  she  purposely  put  herself  into  positions  where  she  would  come  off  as  the  𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐒𝐄𝐋  .  she  wanted  some  white  knight  to  come  running  over  to  save  her  .  as  sweet  and  pure  as  the  girl  seemed  . . .  she  had  her  streak  of  insanity  .           (       but  that  wasn't  something  spoken  about  .      )          something  that  was  𝐁𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐃  far  and  deep  inside  of  her  .  unable  to  pry  open  unless  she  finally  exploded  and  that  wasn't  something  a  pure  girl  did  .  she  didn't  explode  .          ⏤            so  no  ,  luciana  didn't  take  𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄  to  vince's  words  .  if  anything  ,  she  let  a  soft  smile  spread  across  her  lips  as  he  made  his  way  closer  to  her  .  as  much  as  she  hated  what   vince  did  to  her  in  the  past  . . .  playing  her  in  the  way  he  did  .  she  couldn't  help  herself  from  vying  for  his  attention  ,  even  with  the  years  between  them  all  now  .             ❛      i  should've  paid  more  attention  when  my  father  tried  to  teach  me  how  to  change  a  tire  .     ❜         words  came  out  soft  and  sweetly  .  despite  the  fact  that  her  father  had  𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑  dared  to  teach  her  anything  other  than  throwing  money  at  any  and  every  situation  .           (      but  she  was  better  than  her  parents  ,     )         wasn't  she  ?           ❛      i  do  ,     ❜        she  replied  as  she  unlocked  the  truck  and  walked  over  to  open  it  .  leaning  against  the  side  of  the  car  shortly  after  as  she  looked  at  the  male  .          ❛      i  don't  know  how  i'll  ever  be  able  to  repay  you  .     ❜

        taking the time to just  ...  be a girl with luci is  exactly  what stella needed,  and the blonde realizes this as she glances at the raven haired girl,  pink painted lips curving into a grin as she lets out a soft giggle.    "i think you have to have it. i'm serious, if you don't buy it for yourself, i'm buying it for you."   slender hands reach out to  gently brush  some hair out of luci's face,  shaping it to fall against the curve of her jawline and curtain her brows just so.    "beautiful,"   stella informs luciana,  before stepping back to admire her own work,  before shrugging.   "honestly? barbie. we deserve a barbie who looks like you anyway. it probably would've held me back from bleaching my hair just a litle bit longer."   and now stella is  attached  to the golden glow  of her hair,  so there'll be no going back on it now. 

          a  smile  pulled  at  the  girls  lips  as  stella  fixed  her  hair  .  hands  coming  up  to  cup  at  the  bottom  of  her  chin  as  if  she  was  a  perfect  little  princess  .  or  ,  that's  what  she  was  going  for  ,  at  least  .  a  lean  of  her  head  as  she  tilted  it  to  the  side  .         ❛      well  with  that  boost  to  my  ego  ,  i'm  going  to  have  to  buy  them  .     ❜         pulling  the  sunglasses  up  to  rest  on  top  of  her  head  .  luciana  practically  skipped  forward  before  looping  her  arm  with  stella's  .         ❛       well  ,  i  love  your  hair  blonde  .  it  suits  you  .     ❜         a  continued  smile  on  her  lips  before  walking  with  her  in  the  direction  of  the  cash  register  .         ❛      we  should  go  get  a  cocktail  !  have  some  girl  talk  .  catch  me  up  on  any  new  people  in  your  life  .     ❜

if  there  was  one  thing  that  you  could  be  sure  of  ,  it  was  that  if  nick  found  something  entertaining  then  he  would  press  on  .  he  wasn't  deterred  by  disinterest  like  some  and  with  luciana  ,  he  felt  that  deep  down  she  was  the  opposite  of  disinterested  .  she  was  the  opposite  of  passive  ,  sweet  ,  angelic  ,  all  the  things  she  wanted  the  world  to  see  .  he  liked  wicked  women  ,  for  a  season  .  he  liked  good  girls  ,  for  a  few  moments  …  it  was  anyone  that  was  more  complex  ,  that  had  another  hidden  side  that  he  latched  onto  ,  wanted  to  sink  his  teeth  into  .  into  their  flesh  .  into  their  soul  .  "  if  you  keep  talking  like  that  then  you're  going  to  do  me  a  grave  injury  ,  "  he  claims  ,  literate  to  the  core  when  he  wanted  to  be  ,  charming  and  unassuming  when  he  needed  to  be  but  it  was  all  just  a  play  ,  a  ploy  .  there  were  people  around  them  ,  the  normal  passers  by  ,  coming  and  going  ,  engaging  in  every  day  life  without  a  clue  about  the  intricate  growing  webs  around  them  threatening  to  compromise  the  very  foundation  of  lincoln  city  .  but  if  nick  was  to  be  compromised  ,  he  would  have  to  compromise  someone  else  along  the  way  …  he  is  standing  upright  when  he  reaches  out  .  "  why  don't  you  let  me  carry  some  of  those  bags  ?  they  look  far  too  heavy  for  such  a  fragile  ,  little  angel  ,  "  his  voice  trickles  ,  velvety  and  pretty  prose  ,  the  kind  that  could  wrap  up  the  naive  .  he's  reaching  out  ,  knowing  that  she  wouldn't  reject  him  in  such  a  public  place  -  no  ,  that  wouldn't  be  very  polite  at  all  .  "  i'm  in  such  a  good  mood  …  i  can  even  give  you  a  ride  …  unless  you  don't  think  i'm  worthy  of  your  company  ,  "  all  of  it  tainted  ,  each  word  a  commitment  to  whatever  devilish  idea  was  forming  in  his  mind  .  but  ,  he  would  deliver  her  safe  and  sound  ;  that  was  a  guarantee  .

         ❛    oh  please  ,  i'm  sure  there's  a  million  other  girls  that  are  thrilled  to  see  you  .  your  ego  can  handle  it  .     ❜         the  thing  about  luciana  when  it  came  to  nick  was  that  there  were  moments  she  felt  she  held  strong  .  a  different  kind  of  rejection  that  she  didn't  hold  to  most  that  gave  her  the  time  of  day  .  but  there  were  other  times  where  he  held  a  grasp  so  tight  around  her  ,  she  couldn't  help  but  be  𝐏𝐔𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐃  into  whatever  the  male  had  twisting  about  in  his  head  .  luciana  was  a  good  girl  ,  she  was  kind - hearted  and  sweet  .  someone  that'd  flash  a  smile  in  even  the  darkest  of  times  .         (       or  at  least  ,  that's  what  she  wanted  to  be  .     )        a  desperate  need  to  be  whoever  she  felt  she  was  𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐃  to  .  to  be  the  person  that  people  wanted  to  be  around  .  to  be  someone's  beacon  of  light  . . .  although  ,  luci  never  was  and  never  would  be  that  to  anyone  .  something  always  slightly  unaligned  for  the  girl  .  always  the  stop  along  the  way  and  never  the  actual  destination  .  it  seemed  the  more  she  longed  for  things  ,  the  harder  it  was  for  her  to  𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘  grasp  onto  anything  at  all  .  not  without  trying  ,  of  course  .  always  holding  on  for  dear  life  but  it  never  being  enough  .  then  there  was  nick  ,  someone  who  she  wanted  to  run  from  .  was  it  because  she  knew  he  was  trouble  ?  and  what  good  girl  wanted  trouble  ?  or  was  it  because  she  knew  he  was  trouble  and  there  was  a  part  of  her  that  wanted  to  be  tossed  into  whatever  fire  he  was  building  ?          ⏤         as  much  as  she  wanted  to  deny  the  offer  and  tell  nick  to  get  away  from  her  . . .  she  couldn't  act  so  . . .  𝐔𝐍𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆  in  front  of  all  the  people  passing  by  in  the  mall  .         ❛     fine  ,     ❜         an  almost  unamused  tone  but  it  was  followed  with  a  smile  as  she  stepped  forward  and  began  to  hand  the  bags  over  .  eyes  moving  upwards  as  she  caught  his  gaze  before  they  fell  ever  so  slightly  to  the  other  features  of  his  face  .          (      a  girl  couldn't  help  but  admire  . . .     )        even  if  she  didn't  want  to  .  letting  go  of  the  bags  ,  she  nodded  a  bit  before  stepping  back  .  not  wanting  to  get  sucked  into  whatever  it  was  nick  had  over  her  even  all  these  years  later  .          ❛      we  wouldn't  want  to  ruin  a  good  mood  ,  would  we  ?     ❜         continuing  to  smile  ,  she  told  herself  she  was  𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘  agreeing  to  go  with  him  because  she  was  nice  ,  kind  ,  sweet  .  but  they  both  knew  ,  there  was  a  part  of  her  that  was  curious  .
