I love this text post so I drew it

fixation really is the root of suffering when it comes to idealizing someone. we dream and we fantisize about this person. we fall in love with potential which only feeds this desire. we are so quick to form endless daydreams and create a whole new person in our heads. by doing this, we paint a picture of this person in a completely different light from who they really are. through the disconnect between the person we created in our imagination, we set ourselves up for suffering; but really itâs self-inflicted. itâs the disconnect between our own version we imagined them as and the reality of who they actually are. you gain your power back by accepting someone for who they are, not for who they should be

hi im complaining about tiktok again and i know this has been said a million times but i despise how the self-censorship that got really popular on there is quickly becoming the norm. why is my podcast that i listen to that is by and for adults and swears regularly censoring the word "sex" in its episode descriptions on spotify, a platform where they dont even censor officially uploaded song titles for songs like "fuck the pain away." why are there book blurbs using "unalive" completely in earnest. why are people on twitter writing s3x. youtubers can at least handwave having to bleep terms like "heroin" bc that's specifically a youtube problem but why in an era where everyone is handwringing about how everything is Literally 1984 do people not seem to care about grown adults gleefully regressing into homestuck typing quirks and ugly babytalk
âWhy canât the people writing fucked up fiction just go somewhere else?â
They did. They did, about 10 years ago, and they called it an Archive Of Our Own.

Thinking about the death of subcultures. Like I havenât seen any goth kids or punks or any obvious subcultural movements in years. And obviously part of that is just cultural change, but when I think of modern subcultures the only thing I can think of are those tiktok alternative people, like egirls, but there isnât that sense of a real âsceneâ going on with their own lifestyles and music and events, like lived experience thatâs shared. I feel like what we might call modern subcultures are all reduced to mere aesthetics and theyâre all mostly online, and they all look way too pretty â their make up is always perfect and their clothes are perfectly aesthetic and thereâs none of that deliberate freakishness going on; literally grunginess itself has been commodified. Thereâs none of the real expression of confusion and anger that came with growing up in a world that you felt on some level was fucked up but you couldnât express why, so you expressed it by dressing like a freak, by looking kinda deliberately out of place. I want that spirit back because this is what subcultures were about. Letâs bring back real subculture, not the alienated commodified version thatâs based on aesthetics and has been reduced to social media, but the kind where you actually go out looking completely unhinged on purpose to disrupt. The kind where you meet other people and feel a sense of empowerment in your willing difference from the mainstream, and by that I mean the kind that is explicitly anticapitalist.

I wonder where the break happened that such wide swaths of younger fans donât grasp fandom things that used to be unspoken understandings. That fic readers are expected to know fiction from reality, that views expressed in fic are not necessarily those of the author, that the labels, tags and warnings on various kinkfics are also the indication that they were created for titillation and not much more, please use responsibly as per all pornography. The âproblemâ isnât that so-called âproblematicâ fic exists but that some of the audience is being stupid, irresponsible, at worst criminal, at best not old enough to be in the audience to begin with. And thatâs on the consumer, not the author who told you via labels, tags, ratings, warnings and venues what their fic was about and what it was for.
I canât stress enough how important this post is
Tumblr. Tumblr is what happened, with its never-ending scrolling, with its lack of nested contents (or ANY comments, when fandom sailed here from the old world), with its tags instead of membered communities.
Tumblr turned fandom content into mindless consumption instead of community. Iâm no expert on human behaviour, but Iâd put money on this.
When Authors stopped being friends and turned into content providers, new fandom members never learned to care.
âWhen authors stopped being friends and turned into content providersâ
Well that reframed my view of every fandom Iâve touched for the last five years, and it explains a lot.
I really cannot emphasize how the lack of comments and nested comments impacted fandom. It turned fandom into a series of one-way relationships. Social media is extremely uninteractive compared to mediums like journals and forums.
Even âTumblr conversationsâ, where you reblog each otherâs posts back and forth and it turns into a dialogue, extremely limited. You can generally only do this a few times.
But thereâs another, insidious layer to this, which is how reblogs work: itâs easy to create new ârealitiesâ or versions of postâŚwithout people realizing that other versions exist. If two differnent people reblog from the same person to add a comment, then other people reblog from them adding further comments, youâll get something like this:
That is 14 different versions of the same post someone could see. Fourteen separate realities right there!
You might be seeing this:
While someone else will see this:
Now repeat things over several years and hundreds, if not thousands, of posts, and you can see how this can quickly lead to separate realities.
Even if people know each other, or are in the same fandom!
Something to note about how and why this happens. See those gray lines connecting the various dots? Those are profitable to the social media companies. That nebulous gray blog encompassing the two stars/fans, or the invisible hypothetical line connecting those two stars? That is not profitable. So companies are not only disincentivized to facilitate that connection in the first place, but actively try to prevent it too!
Compare this to how journals, forums, listservs, and other older fandom platforms operated:
Now, this is a very vague visual representation of multiple different platforms, but there are three main things I was trying to indicate.
tl;dr
Social media removed reciprocation, communication, and agency in content consumption. Fans react to either passive consumption because thatâs the only way to stay sane in such an overwhelming platform, or to extremism because thatâs the only form of agency they can truly have in their fandom experience. Fandom isnât something you participate in, itâs something that happens to you.
And if this sounds familiar to any social science majors out there, you mightâve taken a course about group dynamics, ideological persistence, and/or had to study about the proliferation of social and/or political movements. Nicky Case has a lovely interactive webapp that lets you play around with these concepts and experience this in just half an hour of playing around:
The Wisdom and/or Madness of Crowds
Those three things in detail (put under a cut due to length):

This is an excellent read on Tumblr fandom, and encapsulates some of the things about the platform that give me pause before posting.
I think that what weâre experiencing now, as a reaction, is a resurgence of individual communities. More often than not these days, I see that individual fandoms or groups within fandoms have a Discord or other place to talk away from Tumblr.
I think that may also explain why some people tend to like more than they reblog. Reblogging means leaving yourself open to (often extremist/purity-motivated) criticism of your choices - or leaves the OP open to similar criticism from your followers, with you as the involuntary middleman whose reblog made that connection possible.
Likes and drafts are private - you can collect posts in a place where no one sees them but you. It doesnât have to be a public statement. It can just be a thing that caught your interest for whatever reason, that you wanted to be reminded of.
I strongly encourage anyone who hasnât already to read this essay on how web 2.0 has changed fandom
itâs not just tumblr, or twitter, itâs a fundamental shift in how people act online in the era of social media and algorithm-driven interaction towards advertising revenue
Man, Iâm feeling this today. And thereâs ways to fight itâreading through the tags or comments on every post, deliberately carrying out the threaded reblog chain discussion even when it gets unwieldy, @-replying back and forth, etc etcâbut theyâre stopgaps, and man, I am too tired to try to fight the tide this morning.

No one here seems interested in the grimy parts of mental health. Everyone wants to talk about mental illness as quiet introverts drinking tea and nervously stuttering over words. No one ever talks about symptoms like paranoia or hallucinations or hypersexuality or compulsions or homelessness or drug addiction or delusions or psychosis or violent urges. Every time a clearly mentally ill person commits a crime, and someone says, âHey, maybe this is a sign that we need to improve mental health awareness in this country,â everyone goes to screaming: âThis isnât about mental illness! Mentally ill people arenât violent!â
But yes, sometimes mentally ill people are violent. Sometimes we are bad people. And even those mentally ill people are in need of advocacy, maybe even more so.
When you post âProtect people with mental illnesses at all costs,â do you mean all of us, or just the cute ones?
I get sick of tumblrâs version of self care, which 90% of the time threads into this beautifully: go pet a fuzzy cute animal! pile up your favorite blankets from childhood and watch disney movies! take a nap! play a game from this list of cute soothings games!Â
More realistically: go take a shower because itâs been three days. Wash the dishes that have been in the sink since last Friday that you can smell as soon as you open your door because rotting food stinks. Pick all your clothes off the floor because thatâs where your entire wardrobe is and youâve already cried today because you tripped over a sweater and realized the cat puked on it. Call someone who can give you enough courage to pay that bill youâve been ignoring. Put away the crackers because thatâs all youâve eaten for two days straight. Apologize to the friends who are worried sick about you, and if you canât at least let them know you are ok and need space.Â
One of the most empowering types of self-care is responsibility, but tumblr just wants to sit in a closet strung with fairy lights and read their favorite fic. Â
âCuteâ self-care for âcuteâ mental issues. Thatâs not reality.Â
