i’ve been told that moral OCD is stigmatised because of the way that people discuss will graham and while i somewhat agree, i think the opposite can be true too when people purposefully label him that way. sure a lot of people don’t understand that intrusive thoughts do not make you inherently bad and violent but the whole conclusion of the show is that hannibal was right about will. thus, his thoughts were not purely intrusive and untrue to what he wanted. everyone is allowed their own interpretations but the annoying thing about the rise in various people framing will graham as moral OCD in factual statement and not headcanon is that it defeats the entire point of the narrative. intrusive thoughts are not true reflections of your desires or who you are, as they are intrusive and ego-dystonic. but will graham’s problem with his thoughts and urges was never “no, i don’t want this and this isn’t me,” it was more like “no, i CAN’T want this and this CAN’T be me” but it is ofc. so no, i’m not stigmatising a disorder that he does not canonically have by making objective observations and understanding the point of the story and character. i think being overly attached to that label for him can also be stigmatising as he is not a true representation of that disorder. too often we can strive to self identify and blur with our favorite characters and if you yourself have moral OCD thats definitely not the best idea with will graham (speaking from personal experience), so tread carefully.
reminder that Will has experienced the world as more colourful/vivid when recreating murders as early as the first time we ever saw him, compared to a startlingly monotone and cold "real world"

HUGH DANCY as Will Graham Hannibal 1.05 "Coquilles"
may we all absorb this as a fandom please
May I add this part, too?
and leave this here too bc we all know how this goes
Lowkey hot take but although Will Graham OBVIOUSLY isn’t completely innocent he was still a victim of Hannibal’s abuse in season one and although Hannibal “helped him” to bring out his dark and true nature, Will probably could’ve lived his life not acting on his intrusive thoughts if it wasn’t for Hannibal.
Not disagreeing with the first part, one still can be the target and victim of something/someone while not being entirely an innocent little lamb whatsoever, but I think framing all Will is as "intrusive thoughts" as if that was moral OCD he was struggling with, erases the purpose of the show and his own purpose.
I've said it before I know, but this is the mistake the others make too, in the show. They treat Hannibal and Will like ordinary people in an ordinary world (while there is also this debate that those characters also don't belong to this world we live in). That's their fatal mistake and it always costs them highly. It blinds them to what they are capable of, and what they truly think and what they have at core. They are not ordinary, and they are not extraordinary in my opinion in the way a highly intelligent person is. They both are, of course, but that's not the point. They are something out of our understanding. That's a part of why they cannot exist without each other. We all have eyes but Will is the only one with the eyes capable of truly seeing Hannibal and vice versa. They don't see each other in a "oh, I see and get you because I'm very smart and I have an empathy disorder" way. They see each other as in "I see you because I see myself."
That's why Jack suggests Will should cut that part of himself branded by Hannibal out. Why Alana warns him not to let Hannibal in. They try their best to understand but they always fail, not because they are stupid but because the world Hannibal and Will exist in, is entirely different. A bubble existing within this world where their rules, their sight and their understanding applies only. Bedelia was probably the only person who could get slightly closer.
I personally think Will would not last 30 more years suppressing that, swallowing down all he has been and what he craves. It somehow, somewhere leaks eventually. In whatever form that might have been. He wasn't doing well even before Hannibal. Will reshapes those around him in order to get the perfect image of a normal life. I'm not saying he is doing this either out of pure malice or entirely consciously, but one glance at Molly and Walter and you see how different they are when Will is not watching them. Even the marriage he chooses for the sake of living normally after Hannibal is a broken one in some ways. But who knows, he might have been able to manage a somewhat normal life, no matter how miserable and hollow. That's all my thoughts on this.
But the point is that in such stories, with people you can't entirely treat as normal humans who'd feel and be the same way we do (even if we relate to them a lot), their truth and nature will find its way out somehow because they are and always have been more than a simple byproduct of someone's influence or even help. They will eventually find it all beautiful. Even if you try your best at normalcy, even if you want to stay, normalcy will chew you and spit you out. You never belonged to that side of the story to begin with.

i agree will could’ve lived on not having tapped into that side of himself but i don’t like the framing of “intrusive thoughts” when the whole conclusion was it was beautiful and killing was wills true desire all along. if you’re making moral OCD headcanons sure, or maybe if this was real life, but he was itching to kill from the get-go and that was always a part of him from what we know in canon. will admitted to liking killing hobbs to a near stranger within two episodes, so… he was appalled by his thoughts because they were against the morals he was upholding at the time, but we’re shown in time that morals get thrown out the window and will graham is full of shit. he hides behind the wounded bird image and the passivity of it all but he still delights, and boy does he more than tolerate. i think his thoughts were more ego-syntonic than not, personally. he was holding up strict morals in the beginning because that’s what he felt he should do probably, to move in the world and survive and be accepted. this is a recurring theme with him, what he’s “supposed to do”. (this is why i have theories of will having done something violent in his past and getting majorly traumatized by it, like being exiled or rejected or abused/conditioned etc.)
