I know there's a lot of contention about Calliope returning at some point in the future, even though I'm on the rocks about it and can see it being both an interesting plot point and a regression of the original story.

But there is something so heartbreaking about the idea of Atreus somehow meeting this girl that still carries her wooden flute like a lifeline. And she sees this lanky boy with bright red hair and blue eyes and little features that make her eyes blurry because her papa left her and he has been gone for so long.

Especially if we have Atreus leave Kratos at the end of Ragnarok. Only to somehow find this girl who talks about the flute her papa carved for her, reminding him of the wooden toys and the knife he still carries on his belt his father had made for him? How these two children saw how war destroyed the father they don't realise they share in different lights; one whose life was cut far, far too short by her own father's blade and one who carried that same rage in him and was terrified of what he could do?

Calliope is the ghost of everything Kratos didn't want for Atreus. She is the centre of all his fear and secrets and lies that in turn hurt Atreus. The source of every nightmare and hesitation that almost cost Kratos another child. The idea of these two children meeting and becoming friends and learning to realise through one another that their father never wanted to hurt them and in his resolve to do better he made many, many mistakes.

This is sort of a comparison in affection that Kratos shows to his children, before and after. It stood out to me that in the Norse game, Kratos so badly wanted to comfort his son when Atreus was saying he wished Faye was there. While in the Greek games, he was at least affectionate with Calliope, going so far as to kiss her on the cheek in a vision that he thought was real.

Definitely not trying to pit the siblings against each other! 😅

Kratos himself can play the lyre, and given he was able to successfully carve a wooden flute for Calliope, odds are he’s familiar with the flute too. And also he can carve wood well enough to make a flute. Speaking of Calliope, he and Lysandra named their daughter after one of the Muses, and Calliope was very skilled with the flute, composing an entire song by the time she was about 8

And as for his Norse family, while I’m not entirely sure about Faye’s artistic abilities, I’m sure she has some, and I know Atreus can draw quite well. And while she’s technically not part of the family (yet), Angrboda is also a skilled artist
