“It was the beginning of June; summer was arising out of spring, like an aloe from a field of grass.”
— Gabriele D'Annunzio, from The Book of the Virgins (Hesperus Press, 2003)
did someone set gwtting out of bed to hard mode or what
the thing is that sometimes it really does feel like someone took a knife baby edgy and dull and cut a six inch valley through the middle of my skull. it does feel like that you know. no other way to describe that feeling i think

You have my deepest gratitude for protecting me. But calling me your spouse... Do not address me in such a manner. It is not to my liking. Forgive me. I thought... Never again. Because... you have never asked.

realized most of my feelings on how hong kong cinema is talked about today in both academia and media can be summed up by the "quit telling everyone i'm dead / sometimes i can still hear their voice" meme, except it's about the work of an entire fucking film industry and every creative in it who's keeping it going despite the whole world telling them it's hopeless
yes, it's true that hong kong cinema nowadays isn't as flourishing as it was through the 80s/90s, and leading into the early 2000s. there are a variety of factors (economic, financial, political, technological) that have made it difficult for hong kong films to receive the same kind of attention on both continental and global scales, and the conditions for newer acting stars to become well known outside of hong kong (without attaching themselves to another entertainment industry in another region) almost no longer exist. the quantity of local productions has dropped, and previously iconic genres such as action have suffered as a result. there is less flexibility for auteur directors to experiment with style and genre the way filmmakers were able to a few decades ago. these factors are deeply unlikely to change. there is no going back to "Before"; everyone involved in this industry knows that.
but that doesn't mean hong kong cinema is dead today, the way some people like to proclaim (the continued worship of a past "golden age" for hong kong film and music is related to this, and something i'll likely talk about again in future). actors on both screen and stage are still trying to achieve their dreams, to create something for themselves and others. old and new directors are here and they're still making films, still telling stories, good stories, despite lower box office return for local projects and movie theatres closing. there are creatives who have turned to using the internet and youtube in different ways to draw people in to hong kong entertainment, from both inside and outside the region. the industry is smaller, yes. everyone who chooses it as their life path takes a risk, and they don't know now, more than ever, if it'll pay off. but this place is far from dead.
how it WILL be left behind, however, is if people around the world continue to write off hong kong cinema, and ignore the existence of every individual who's thrown themselves into it. (for passion, for joy, for the fact that someone must continue the work. no one chooses this industry for money, these days.) the way you ensure hong kong cinema dies more quickly, is if people don't give it a chance, and turn it instead into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
don't do that. every creative work on and off-screen deserves better than that.
anyways, have a handful of hong kong film recs all released in the last couple years:
