Ever since I saw the screenshots, it's been nagging at me to draw them.

...obviously, I finally caved, though it's only a sketch. But ugh they look so good that I needed to contribute!

I find Zuko's expression here pretty interesting. Like, he obviously seems mildly perturbed (probably because he was just chucked into a hole by a bunch of people working for his sister), but he also doesn't seem particularly upset to see Katara, specifically.

He's not remotely concerned that she's going to attack him, despite the fact that that would not be an unreasonable assumption given the circumstances. Yes, she doesn't have water (except for the spirit water, obviously), but I don't think that's something Zuko would immediately be able to register the very second he sees her. It's as if he is under the firm impression that she won't attack if she isn't attacked by him first, so much so that it's one of his first thoughts when he sees her for the first time in months. Heck, he also immediately sits turned away from her after this, like he is fully and entirely confident that she won't attack him without her bending either (something something he's paid enough attention to pick up on the fact that she's a kind and reasonable person who primarily fights in defense of others something something).

He also doesn't look particularly irritated, either. Especially when compared to his immediate reaction to seeing Aang later in the scene (I know it's slightly different circumstances, but I do think it's an interesting contrast). Like, I feel like it would have been super easy for his reaction to be something along the lines of "Oh. It's you", even if only through his initial facial expression. Which also seems like a pretty natural reaction to have when seeing the best friend of your former greatest enemy, especially if she's very clearly unhappy to see you. But instead his reaction instead looks much more neutral, at least in my opinion. Like it doesn't particularly bother him to see her again.

Between the two, and his expression, he looks almost... repentant? He isn't, yet, but it's very interesting to me that Zuko was framed this way. We have to remember that, especially in animation, everything is a deliberate choice. Made and reinforced by multiple people.

Always, she looks at the sun.

Zuko: What's the plan? Katara: We'll deal with the Denied.

I beg new Zutarians to open your eyes and not let brats and bandwagon hoppers convince you to drop what makes your ship compelling.
