I feel like trump looking likely to beat a more competent and qualified female candidate twice, both being the only times a woman has been a nominated presidential candidate, is a real blow to the psyche for all women and girls in the U.S.. It seems to deliver a message of "no matter how put-together, professional, and smart you are, you will always lose to the dumbest, loudest man in the room."

Everything feels awful right now but it isn't really. We still don't officially have a winner, but regardless of how the presidential election ends up, I wanted to take a minute and find what lights I can in the 3 a.m. darkness. Here's what I know:
* Kentucky overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to undermine the public education system by offering private school vouchers:

* Delaware has elected a transgender woman to the House of Representatives, the first out trans person of any gender ever elected to congress:

* For the first time in history, two Black women will be serving in the senate at the same time, and they are only the fourth and fifth Black women ever elected to the senate:
Democrats Lisa Blunt Rochester from Delaware and Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland both saw victories
* New York State has passed a constitutional amendment enshrining the rights of pregnant people (including the right to an abortion), LGBTQIA+ people, the disabled, immigrants regardless of legal status, and other at-risk groups:

* Democrat Josh Stein has beaten self-avowed Nazi Mark Robinson to become governor of North Carolina:

That's everything I know off the top of my head. It's not many bright spots, but it's not zero. I'm going to try to find more and I'll add them to the post. It's the only thing I can think of to do that isn't sobbing and throwing up or looking up Canadian immigration rules.

it’s fucking insane that a moderator had to say “there is no state where you can kill a baby after it’s born” at a presidential debate.
I think one of the reasons the Harris / Walz ticket has so much momentum is because the campaign is genuinely trying to put out this vibe of fun. Like that's all the "brat" thing is, the coconut jokes, just being kind of silly and fun.
And I think it's working, because let's be real, we are all exhausted. It's been all about preserving democracy, defeating fascism, the past eight years. The message has been "vote for us because the country is literally on the line". The vibes are not good when we are stuck back at that fight, and not even discussing trying to make progress on things like housing, healthcare, education, etc. And the fight to just stop fascism? All still true. Project 2025 is real and is extremely scary. We can't let that man back into office.
But the vibe was "vote for us otherwise we're all fucked :(" and now has shifted to "get in, we're making popcorn and then bullying fascists." Like a lot of the issues conservatives bring up, the Harris / Walz is just not engaging them in good faith, as they shouldn't. Republicans bring up abortion, and the Dems are just like, "you want 14 year old to give birth? Weirdo" and just leave it at that. Like YES, that's what you should do. Because it SHOULDNT be a debate. And it's working. This is how you defeat the identify politics thing Republicans have been trying to push for a while. Just mocking them for the stupidity of it all. "Like seriously? You think a book can make someone gay??? Hahaha." None of the Republicans are reacting well. They can't stand it. Vance even complained about bullying!!! Like do you KNOW who picked you as vp??? It's actually laughable, because they have no room to stand on when it comes to bullying.
And a huge part of the mocking and dismissing of Republicans is that the message is clear - were done debating all this stupid stuff. We've won the last two elections' popular vote - most Americans do NOT want christo-facism. It's time to move on. And that's what gives me hope, and the feeling of hope I think a lot of people have picked up on. It's time to address all the issues we've all wished we've been addressing the past decade. It's important we move onto that, and that's the message I'm getting from this campaign (We're not going back). I think it will resonate with a lot of people, because plainly, we're all just sick of this same old news cycle and fake rage bait over things like "should women have rights?", "Should gay people be allowed to exist?" The general populace have answered YES to both these multiple times, and it is time to move on. Maybe I'm being naive, but I am genuinely excited at the idea of putting to bed these debates (it's exhausting trying to fend your very existence) and moving on to actual economic and social policies that could fix a lot of deterioration over the last 2 decades.
im sure tim walz has done something horrible due to having politician syndrome however it is very funny to me that conservatives are trying to #own him by calling him tampon tim. because he helped get a law passed that required menstrual products to be stocked in all bathrooms. like what a desperate attempt at recreating the "jd vance fucked a couch" jokes except that this is like calling a guy "shelter jake" because he funds animal shelters.
also like. I didn't know that about him. learning that immediately improved my opinion of him a little bit. they are doing his publicity for him.

If you want to know how US politics are going at the moment: Kamala Harris has taken to brushing off criticisms from Trump/Vance by (correctly) just calling them weird and moving on.
J.D. Vance has reached out to several news outlets, asking them to print stories about how this definitely does not make him mad.
I think it's hitting hard because a lot of conservatives know it's true.
If the post-qanon world has proved anything, it's that conservatives know when they're being weird. They recognize and resent how it gets all quiet at the dinner table when they mention the "White genocide."
I'm just theorizing here, but part of what changed is that the average conservative knows at least one person who got divorced because of Qanon shit. They've seen the real, material consequences. They've seen what happens if you get too out of pocket, and boy does that piss them off.
I think it's also hitting hard because she's treating them like the bad faith actors they are, and they just don't know what to do with that. A lot of their strategy depended on their opponents taking them in good faith or at least trying to take the high road with them, but now they've got someone who truly understands the meaning of "do not feed the trolls."
I am hoping so much that we get a campaign season full of Democrats saying, "...did you all hear that? Did he really say that out loud? His plan for America's future is [an end to voting/women being stuck in abusive relationships/middle-school principles strip-searching preteens]?" and so on.
And I'd love to see a whole bunch of "of course we're not discussing that issue because it's not real. The fact is [short statement]; now, I'm moving on to..."
