Something I appreciate about Monkey Man is how doesn't try to frame revenge as just a pointlessly violent, self-destructive pursuit the way many films do. I think it's because Dev Patel was unafraid of adding a political element to the story. The kid wants to avenge his mother, but he also doesn't want what happened to them to keep happening to others. The presence of the hijras really drives this idea home. They fight with him not only because he's their friend, but because Baba and the nationalist party will bring violence literally to their door even if they don't fight back. I often roll my eyes at anti-revenge narratives. I think Dev Patel gets what it's like to be a victim of systematic violence in a way most filmmakers seem not to. Revenge isn't just a selfish pursuit that perpetuates the ~cycle of violence~, it can also be a desperate desire for the violence to end.

Knowing that the Palestinians have no clean water, and they are drinking dirty water which makes them sick just to survive.

The Israelis are going to the beach, they have access to public transport, they have the freedom to move around and do whatever they wish.

The Palestinians are writing their names on their hands so they can be identified when the bombs strike.

This is not a war.

Like. All the sources are clear they're killing civilians. A LOT of civilians. What's NOT clear. Is who they're killing BESIDES civilians. Like. ARE THESE DETAILS NOT IMPORTANT TO US???

No Israeli casualties have been reported since the initial attack that I can find, and it seems like that would be front and center, right? So like nobody is even fighting back. So it's not even a war. It's just like, air strikes on a civilian population.

The hostages????? Have we forgotten about those for some reason????? It's been what, almost two weeks? Are we not worried Israel will blow them up with all the bombs they're dropping—and if we're NOT worried that the hostages are even there, what are the bombs targeting. If there's a credible threat that Hamas might kill the hostages, why has israel gone so crazy with the bombs.

Like yeah I know the news sources are not going to have all the secret details about military operations but none of this makes any sense at all in a universe where Israel isn't just like. massacring civilians as a show of power and/or punishment and/or to get rid of an inconvenient population? which should fucking HORRIFY everybody because white phosphorous is a nasty, cruel and torturous weapon that should never be used against anyone let alone civilians.

basically it burns and burns until there is no more contact with oxygen, so shards of it will burn their way down to bone inside the victim's body and often re-ignite when doctors try to dig them out. It is easily fatal or permanently disabling and causes excruciating injuries
