"       you   weren't   supposed   to   see   that.       "                       the   scarmaster   says,   his   voice   flat   and   coarse   from   the   laceration   over   his   throat,   but   it   was   still   devoid   of   emotion,   even   as   he   looks   down   at   the   motionless   body   still   clinging   to   his   feet.   the   thrill   of   watching   the   man   scramble   to   run   away   is   slowly   fading   to   a   low   thrum   in   his   head;   the   excitement   of   watching   him   try   to   escape   a   death   he   could   never   outrun   is   dying   down,   replaced   by   a   misguided   sense   of   peace   he   used   to   find   in   other   things   when   he   was   still   just   human—when   he   was   still   alive,   with   a   living   heart.

he   can   still   remember   when   people   used   to   say   he   was   lucky   to   survive   what   happened   to   him.   but   is   it   really   survival   when   the   only   thing   that   comes   back   from   the   dead   is   this?   a   masked   alter   ego   that   craves   the   feeling   of   being   alive   again?

with   a   sigh,   he   wipes   the   blood   from   his   knife   as   his   throat   and   skin   begin   to   repair   themselves,   closing   the   wound   that   sealed   the   dead   man's   fate.   he   puts   his   mask   back   on   before   he   finally   turns   to   face   whoever   intruded   on   his   little   kill.        "       if   it   makes   you   feel   better,   he   deserved   it   and   he   should   be   forgotten.   the   world   will   revolve   without   him   in   it.   so   forget   about   this,   okay?       "

"       are   you   decent?       "                       jericho   asks,   mostly   out   of   formality,   because   not   even   a   second   later   he   has   already   entered   the   room.   though,   in   his   defense,   it's   not   like   seeing   each   other   naked   would   be   anything   new.   they   have   already   spent   way   too   many   nights   in   hotels   while   he   toured   around   the   world,   and   have   explored   each   other's   bodies   enough   that   they   aren't   strangers   to   what   makes   the   other   whimper.   sure,   he   could   make   a   show   of   being   ashamed   if   he   did   see   the   other   man   naked,   but   it   has   been   a   long   day   and   an   even   longer   week.

especially   for   the   other   man,   who   woke   up   straight   into   a   nightmare.   jericho   just   wants   to   make   sure   lars   is   comfortable.

putting   the   bed   sheets   and   clothes   down   on   the   bed,   he   gives   the   room   a   quick   once-over   and   whistles    ...    and   watches   as   it   begins   to   tidy   itself.        "       how   are   you   finding   your   room?   it   used   to   be   mine   when   i   was   younger—evident   by   how   everything's   not   in   its   place.       "        jericho   chuckles   and   then   sighs.        "       but   hey!   certainly   an   upgrade   from   the   box   you   were   sleeping   in,   huh?   i   still   haven't   apologized   for   waking   you   up   this   early.       "

"       hey,   stud.   the   show's   not   for   free,   you   know.       "                       marcus   says   with   a   chuckle,   giving   the   other   a   quick   wink   and   a   jiggle   of   his   cheeks   before   returning   to   the   drink   he's   making   for   another   hero.   even   in   the   cacophony   and   chaos   of   shock   therapy's   usual   busy   night,   marcus   can   pinpoint   every   guy   who's   been   staring   at   his   ass.   it's   not   really   the   superpower   he   was   given,   but   you   don't   really   need   a   special   talent   for   this;   work   in   this   industry   long   enough,   and   you   build   a   sensitivity   to   it.   besides,   the   man   has   been   staring   at   it   since   he   sat   down—he's   hardly   subtle.

after   finishing   and   serving   the   drink,   he   finally   sets   his   eyes   on   the   one   who's   been   checking   him   out.   something   tells   him   he   should   know   who   they   are.   if   not   for   being   a   hero,   at   least   someone   from   his   …   darker   persona.   he   smiles   wider. 

"       if   you're   gonna   stare   at   my   ass   the   entire   night,   i   think   it   would   be   polite   to   at   least   order   something.       "        he   continues,   leaning   over   the   bar   and   closing   the   distance   between   them,   ignoring   the   coldness   of   the   counter   against   his   bare   torso.   he   even   arches   his   back   to   raise   his   ass   a   little,   his   tight   jeans   barely   covering   them,   just   so   the   other   can't   miss   it.        "       unless,   of   course,   you   have   something   else   in   mind   …   and   you're   willing   to   give   extra.   so,   what's   it   gonna   be,   handsome?       "

"       you   don't   need   to   sneak   into   the   house   anymore,   tex.   you   know   that,   right?       "                       lucky   says,   smiling   even   though   he's   barely   awake,   watching   as   his   boyfriend   sneaks   through   his   bedroom   window.   admittedly,   even   though   his   family   already   knows   about   the   two   of   them,   he   prefers   it   when   they're   like   this—just   two   stupid   boys   trying   to   hide   a   relationship,   as   if   it   isn't   obvious   what   they   are   to   each   other.

he   turns       (    and   winces,   a   sharp   pain   still   shooting   from   the   side   of   his   torso    )       and   pats   the   spot   beside   him   for   tex   to   take.        "       my   brothers   already   know,   and   lilith   already   hates   me   for   it.   i   don't   think   mom   really   minds    ...    as   long   as   you   don't   hurt   her   baby.   but   you   wouldn't   do   that,   right?       "

why   is   it   that   now,   when   he   is   supposed   to   be   recovering   in   bed   and   left   undisturbed,   these   pesky   journalists   decide   to   come   out   and   bother   him?                     every   minute   he   regrets   promising   levi   that   he   will   be   nice   to   perry.   but   on   the   flip   side,   a   week   with   no   powers   and   no   world-saving   is   driving   him   crazy—and   maybe,   just   maybe,   the   company   is   appreciated.   he’s   not   going   to   say   it   to   him,   of   course,   so   all   he   can   do   is   sigh.

"       man,   can   you   at   least   knock?       "        he   says,   as   he   takes   off   his   shirt   and   begins   making   his   way   to   his   bed,   which   is   set   up   for   him   to   have   another   marathon   of   his   dad's   movies.   lorrin   says   this   is   a   bad   idea,   but   all   he   wants   now   is   to   see   his   dad   and   be   assured   that   he   is   safe   and   unharmed.   and   seeing   him   happy,   healthy,   and   handsome   in   his   old   films   is   what's   filling   that   worry   right   now.

sitting   down   on   the   mattress,   he   then   turns   to   face   perry,   looking   at   them   with   a   raised   eyebrow.        "       so       ...       you   broke   into   my   window.   i'm   gonna   assume   this   is   for   something   important?   did   levi   send   you?       "
