I think miranda functions as a sort of amalgam and stand-in for so many of the epic's women. she's cassandra. knowing the future, but never believed. she's penelope. husband forcibly taken as a result of political machinations beyond her control (presumed dead). she's helen. fleeing her husband's house with another man. she's calypso. trapped on an island, only her lover for company. she's circe. the strong and beguiling witch. she's athena. providing wise council and divine guidance. she's clytemnestra. her fury strikes down a powerful man, as revenge for what she's lost. mistress, wife, mother. indeed

yesterday during ancient rome culture class we were discussing livy and the veracity of the foundation myth of rome and i dead ass just spat out a story is true. a story is untrue. as time extends it matters less and less. the stories we want to believe, those are the ones that survive, despite upheaval and transition and progress. those are the stories that shape history. and then what does it matter if it was true when it was born? it has found truth in its maturity, which if a virtue in man ought to be no less so for the things men create.
