        “i am feeling as though my pectoral muscles are struggling to keep my shattered ribs in place, and their inflammation is making breathing a labour where i am used to it happening in spite of me.” 

        evidently, winter’s desire not to be looked upon as weak has dissolved under her capacity for brutal honesty. it is different, to hold a wound aside when her company (usually inferior soldiers, who look to her for guidance and strength) seek hope in her own condition. now, winter takes every moment to feel sorry for herself without a hint of regret. any teasing glynda could engage in will not leave this room, of that winter could not be more sure. still, she shakes her head. 

        “the pain is too dull to justify medication as yet.” she says, raising a hand and instinctively forcing her body to sit up straight as she watches the woman from behind the counter approach, tray in hand. there’s two plates, both littered with bite-size tasters of several different pastries, two ceramic cups billowing with steam and a smaller, glass mug of what looks like discoloured water, tinged green. 

        “black coffee for you,” the woman says, setting one of the mugs in front of winter, and then placing the tea in front of her too. “get that down you first. it’s menthol, and it’ll help with the breathing thing.” charlie straightens after placing glynda’s drink with a wink, before turning her attention back to winter. and patting her own torso. “trust me, from someone who’s broken more than a few ribs themself over the years.” 

        winter nods and thanks her, and the woman departs. winter levels her eyes on glynda and lifts her tea to her lips. 

        “they say faunus ears pick up everything,” she comments, watching charlie’s retreat and grimacing at the taste of the tea. “or is your friend just very observant?” 

Glynda sat and listened quietly, nodding slowly as Winter spoke. Although it had been years, she could sympathize with the other's pain. There was a long stretch of time where she was in the ICU of a hospital in Atlas due to serious injuries. Though she was quite thankful that Winter's wounds weren't nearly as bad.

"Well I am prepared should your pain reach that point. I will also make an effort to get you more pillows when we return to base." For the time being, Winter was sleeping in Glynda's quarters. A nurse came every day to check on her and she had constant company in the form of Toffee, a small kitten the two women had rescued a few weeks prior. Glynda's bed was rather comfortable, compared to the beds in the medical wing. But knowing everything still hurt her so much? Well, that just meant more soft things.

As Charlie walked over, the professor turned her attention to her friend, smiling in thanks as she was given her tea. "Since when have you gotten into herbal medicines?" Glynda took her mug of tea off the table, taking a slow sip and humming in response to Winter.

Glynda was in the bedroom, lying on the bed reading. Charlie had absolutely insisted that she read in bed as a way to get her to rest more. In Charlie’s eyes, she didn’t do it enough. As the voice of her wife carried down the hall, she glanced up from the book for a mere moment, smirking slightly. “I’m sorry, Charlie, but I’m lying down like you told me to!” Despite her words, Glynda marked her page and rose from the bed. She made her way to the hall closet, not responding to anymore of Charlie’s calls. At least until she opened the door with a new roll of toilet paper for her.

fun fact: As a young child, Glynda was actually very shy and meek. It wasn’t until she started to attend combat school that she started to come out of her shell.

        pride is a funny thing, and winter’s is already being prodded like a sleeping lion with a stick just at the meagre pace they are having to keep. she is not blessed with long legs and does not spend several hours a day cultivating powerful muscles for her to dawdle with them. nonetheless, her right hand takes a white-knuckle grip of the edge of her loose white shirt (her usual attire is still too fitted, you see, and her mending ribs don’t cry for perfect aesthetics) in an effort to pretend like what she truly wants to do isn’t sit where she stands and hold her insides in place. 

        the walk so far had felt long enough, but the last stretch is the longest. 

        relief comes hard and fast as glynda held open the door to the small cafe. winter barely took the time to assess her surroundings, instead bee-lining for a very soft looking armchair and allowing herself to slump into it, arm finally crossing over her torso. a wheelchair, even, might have been more acceptable than this. it’s only now that she is off her feet that she glances over to the counter, where an older, red-haired woman casts her a cheesy grin and a thumbs up. her smile is weak, and she turns her attention to glynda as she hears the sound of machines whirring, plates being procured and cups collected. 

        “you sent our order ahead, i see.” winter murmurs, gesturing towards the bustling woman. despite a lack of formal uniform that would indicate the woman is an experienced barista, she seems to be making speedy progress in putting together a tray of drinks and snacks. “i enjoy your efficacy, professor goodwitch. almost as much as being out of that horrible hospital.” 

To say she was surprised as Winter did her best to speed by was an understatement. The walk had been somewhat long and perhaps the specialist wounds weren’t quite as healed as she believed. Allowing the door to close behind her, Glynda procured her scroll from her pocket and sent a message to Bartholomew. She requested a wheelchair be delivered to their location discretely, taking it around back to Charlie. This way she was able to offer it to Winter after their time here was done.

“I did.” She spoke, taking a seat in the other armchair across from Winter. There was a nice table between them for their drinks to rest, and with the chairs facing each other it made conversing easy. “I knew you would appreciate the efficiency. Plus, having a warm drink after a long walk is always nice.” 

Glancing over to Charlie, she waved with a small smile of thanks. It eased her worries to know that the red-haired woman was still one she could rely on, even after so many years. Turning her attention back to Winter, Glynda allowed herself to relax into the chair a bit more. Despite the damage to the cafe as a whole, the chairs held up quite nicely.

        “you know, perhaps those crutches were not such an insult after all.” 

        with an arm wrapped across her torso, winter’s pace had already slowed considerably from when they set out from base camp along the deserted street of a newly-reformed shopping district. that’s not to say her composure was anything less than steel, but fooling glynda was not an endeavour she had the energy for. not with several broken ribs and internal bruising her aura hadn’t yet had the time to clear up. 

        winter’s free hand rose, even now preemptively refusing any help that glynda might offer. her eyes scanned the storefronts, searching. 

        “is your coffee shop much farther?” 

“Only you saw it as an insult, you know.”

Despite normally holding a brisk pace, Glynda stayed slow in order to remain by Winter’s side. There was no hiding that she was worried for the specialist, considering the way she hovered. But who wouldn’t be? Intense bruising and broken ribs weren’t exactly things that you could walk off.

“It’s not much further. You’ll be able to sit soon.”

Normally she didn’t go on patrols very often, since she was needed more at the base camp. But since Winter’s injuries, Glynda had been going out more and more, for longer periods of time each patrol. While she would do her rounds as necessary, she was also fixing up streets that had recently been reclaimed into the protected area. And with the most recent street came a coffee shop.

She worked for hours to repair the structure and do her best to get things back up and running. Replacing the glass was out of her abilities, as it had become such a fine powder in all of the chaos. But it was cleaned for the most part, and somewhat functional. And it was while she worked that she had an idea. An idea to get Winter out of the base to avoid her going stir crazy. 

“Ah, here it is.” 

She stopped before a shop with the name “Deja Brew”. It was a small place, only really able to house a few full tables at a time. I was quaint, and simple; Surely it would have been nicer before the fall but Glynda did what she could. She opened the door for Winter to enter, smiling lightly to the woman behind the bar.
