the sweat on winter's brow is as inevitable as the creature before her, and the molten blade they press against her throat. she can't tell apart triumph and regret in cinder's expression, but it either seem fitting. winter licks the blood from her lips, and stares up at cinder from her knees, defiant. any last words? she hears in the back of her mind from under the executioners hood. her lip curls, and her chin rises. "what a waste of potential you are, indeed."
winter was right. it was a mixture of regret and triumph infused with their expression. regret, in that the one person that brought cinder happiness came between them and their true goal ( or rather, their inability to break free of the chains that bound them ). in that their relationship with winter had weakened them, made their skin shudder at the sight of her. how they’d betrayed one another, twisting words around, finally slipping behind one another’s backs, all for it to come to this ... they always knew it would, the two of them. yet they continued to pursue it, up until the very finish. but it was triumph in that cinder had overcome her standing in their path to power, their path to completely freeing themself. cinder would always win this fight physically, but they had to come out on top emotionally, as well. they lacked severely in that department, as their lover knew.
cinder pressed the blade’s point into the side of winter’s neck slightly, just barely enough to draw out a drop of blood to roll down the length of her neck. they could finish her off, slice her throat without another word. but winter knew how to get to them, better than anyone, and it clearly worked. autumn withdrew the blade momentarily, visage a fury - laced snarl. no, winter didn’t get to have a prideful end, spit in their face one last time. instead, with an enraged grunt, fall delivered a spiteful, powerful kick to her jaw, hard enough to seriously hurt and bruise but not hard enough to break or snap her neck ( surely winter knew this, saw through their angry ruse ). they couldn’t bring themself to even respond to the schnee’s comment. they had no argument against it, no actions to prove the statement wrong. they were a waste. it was what salem implied each time they failed. insisted that cinder had some grand potential, and that she hoped it was not wasted on them. it seemed that, no matter which stern white haired woman they looked to, cinder was a disappointment through and through.
“ you — you ruined me! ” they screamed over her body, baring their teeth. if they killed winter, they were left with nothing in this world but themself, left to writhe in agony alone for the rest of their days. and if i let her go, aren’t i weak? aren’t i everything salem has taught me not to become? their whole body shook at the thought of finally being without her in this world, but also at the consequences of setting her free after salem had instructed them to let this desire, this burning want ... die. how fitting, fall mused. “ everything i worked for until now, it’s — it’s slipping through my fingers because i let you in like a fool! ”
their upkeep of constant hatred finally shattered their facade, and tears fell from their right eye for the first time in gods knew how long. “ you ... ruined me, ” maiden repeated, desperation leaking from their words. “ you ruined everything. ” taking a deep breath, cinder fell to winter’s level, onto their knees as the anger within them decayed into a rotting emptiness. their voice's lowering was accompanied by a curious bloom of the reddening of their eye and cheeks. their emotions, all finally unbottled and unleashed, resulted in this. “ i won’t let you keep doing this to me — ” fall choked out. to my emotions.
fall knew what they were going to do. it hurt too much, but as long as winter remained, she would try to kill them for all they’d done. as long as winter remained, they would be distracted. and they couldn’t have that in this lifeitme. they couldn’t have both her and salem. which meant they couldn’t have her, then. and so with trembling lips, with trembling hand, they finally cried out into the snow floating onto their bodies, lunged the firey blade through the center of her torso just below her chest, and watched the reaction on her face carefully. before the light left those sapphire eyes, autumn pressed a fierce kiss to her lips and wrapped their other arm around her frame as her body shook in their hold. leaning into her dying frame, they whispered into her ear what she’d likely known all along.
