Are You A Koreaboo?
I have a lot of thoughts on this subject.
So, yes- Koreaboos are a thing. They exist, and they can be annoying, but whatever. Do your thing. Hopefully they grow out of it though. This post will not be about all of the annoying things that Koreaboos tend to do. Instead, this post will be about how to differentiate between someone who is a Koreaboo, and someone who is not. Because apparently, there is a lot of confusion surrounding this topic.Â
Some things commonly used to identify Koreaboos are-
They listen to K-Pop
They watch K-Dramas
They write fanfiction (about people associated with the previous two)
Learning Korean
None of those things indicate a Koreaboo. Someone liking K-Pop just means they like music, regardless of the language. Someone liking K-Dramas just means they like a TV show that they need subtitles for. Writing fanfiction is something a lot of people do if they like a certain celebrity, and why would that change just because the person is of a different race? Also, itâs a good way to improve a personâs writing skills in a way they can enjoy. Learning Korean is probably the worst reason to label someone as a Koreaboo, because itâs a language. People are typically required to learn a foreign language in high school, and for a lot of schools, the options are limited to Spanish or French. So, itâs totally understandable as to why you might want to learn something other than those two. Besides, thereâs nothing wrong with challenging yourself to learn a new language, and it looks good on applications, especially since itâs less common for people to know Korean as a second, (third, fourth, etc), language than it would be for Spanish or French. In short, having an interest in something that happens to be Korean does not make you a Koreaboo.
So what does make someone a Koreaboo?
The short and general answer would be OBESSION. However, fangirling does not qualify, because itâs likely that someone would fangirl over any celebrity they like, not just Korean ones. Letâs just jump right into this and list a few things that make a person a Koreaboo-
They act like they know everything about Korea
They try to look Korean
They try to âactâ Korean
They get overly excited about everything remotely related to KoreaÂ
Only listen to Korean music (+ brag about it)
Are only attracted to Asians
If they find someone attractive only because they are Asian (not even necessarily Korean, because they donât care about the difference)
Only eat Korean foods and get upset if they canât
If they lie and say they are Korean or that they lived in Korea
Only use common Korean phrases, and use them often (ex. ěë íě¸ě, ě§ě§, ëë, ě¤ëš , ě¸ë, etc), usually with horrible pronunciation, and use romanization when writing/typing them (this one is more of just an annoying habit people may have, because no one has a problem with the random use of Spanish words like hola or adios)
There are plenty of other things a lot of Koreaboos do, and not all of them do ALL of these things. Iâve just listed some common indicators. Now, this post is already rather lengthy, (I could go on and on), so Iâll state the main difference in bold text.
The difference between someone who is a Koreaboo and someone who isnât is:
Having an interest in something that happens to be Korean vs. Having an interest in something because it is Korean.
This post is not meant to shame anyone, and PLEASE feel free to explore your interests without fear of judgement, because you have that right. And if something makes you happy, just tell that annoying ranting girl on Tumblr to fuck off, and go be yourself. Just maybe take it down a few notches, because you low key seem a little crazy sometimes. Also, if you are interested in something that happens to be Korean and you want to try something else from there (like kimchi or  ëšëšë°Ľ) GO AHEAD. I only made this post, because so many people accuse others of being Koreaboos with literally zero backup for their claim. So, think before you label, or just keep your judgey mouth shut, thanks.Â

CHAPTER ONE: thank you for the music
This is the first chapter of my debut series!
fandom: OWOL member/reader: OWOL, female genre: fluff length: 500+ Â summary: could a chance meeting on the subway lead to something more?Â
A notification popped up on your phone: Subway arriving in 5 mins. Â You quickly gathered the things from your desk and began running to the station. Â You heard the ding signaling that the doors were closing as you hit the top of the stairs. Â You picked up speed, almost taking out an old lady on your way down the stairs. Â Just as the doors were closing you slipped through, with the doors closing behind you. Â
There were barely any seats, people on their way home.  You grasped on to a pole and braced for take-off, when you heard, âDo you want to sit?â You looked and saw a guy motioning for you to sit as he moved his backpack from the seat next to him. Â
âęł ë§ěě,â you said as you slipped into the seat next to him.  He bowed his head in acknowledgement.Â
Sitting next to him, you couldnât help but sneak glances out of the side of your eye. On one of your sneaky glances you lingered too long and he turned, meeting your gaze. Â You shot him a closed lipped smile and quickly turned your head, embarrassment washing over your face.Â
You sat next to him in silence, when you heard Pretty Rickyâs âOn The Hotline,â coming from his earphones.Â
âPretty Ricky?â you asked. Â
He removed one of his earbuds, âHuh?âÂ
âPretty Ricky? Itâs 5 in the morning,â you started to sing.
He chuckled and responded softly, âYeah.â Â
âIâm sorry. I just couldnât help myself.âÂ
âItâs okay, if itâs too loud I can turn it down.âÂ
âOh no, itâs not loud at all, you have good taste in music,â you said smiling. Â
"Do you want to listen?â he said, extending one of his earbuds.
âUm sure...â
âIf you want, you can pick something else,â he said handing you his phone. Â
You began scrolling through his music, when you landed on Alicia Keysâ âYou Donât Know My Name.â  The two of you just sat there listening in silence, he, occasionally singing along softly.  As the song ended, you heard the subway announcement: Now arriving at Exit 6.
âOh shoot,â you said.Â
âIs this your stop?â he asked. Â
âIt is...,â you said gathering your things as the doors opened, âthanks for the music.âÂ
âAnytime.âÂ
You heard the subway departing as you headed up the stairs to the exit. You hit the top of the stairs, when you heard someone shout, âI DIDNâT GET YOUR NAME!âÂ
You turned to see the guy standing at the base of the stairs. Â
You shouted down at him, âI DIDNâT GET YOURS EITHER!âÂ
âOWOL!â he shouted up.Â
âY/N!â you shouted down.Â
He walked up the stairs, meeting you at the top. Â
âSo...y/n?â he began, his lips curling into a smile. Â
âSo...Owol...,â you responded. Â
âCoffee?â Â Â
âCoffee.âÂ
