Those around you and their experiences can have a profound effect on your life... Today is International Cochlear Implant Day and this is a day worth celebrating and spreading awareness. My Momma Jomma is going on a year and half with this life-changing incredible technology. A cochlear implant allows a microphone to pick up sound, then sent to a processor to arrange the sounds, to be transmitted, a signal from the processor converts these sounds into electric impluses, then they're collected and sent the the auditory nerve. The cliffnotes version of the surgery, is that she can "hear with her brain" because the sounds bypass damaged or dead portions of the ear and sent to stimulate the auditory nerve... it's absolutely fascinating and a modern medicine miracle. Her surgery was done at BoysTown National Research Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska and I couldn't be more grateful for Rodney Lusk, MD who performed her surgery and gave her this gift. The smile on his face when he came back from her surgery and told me that it went well, has been one of my favorites moments thus far in my life. He allowed me to fight through my tears to thank him and show my gratitude with a handshake that turned into a hug; he is truly a wonderful man with an amazing career who has helped hundreds of people, children and adults, literally hear the world. Don't take for granted the things in life that are givens to most people. And don't judge people for any kind of disability whether it is physical or mental. Remember, if you were struggling in any way, had a disability, or different barriers in your life... You would want grace, empathy, and understanding displayed to you. So be conscious and intentional with your thoughts, words, and actions. Technology and awareness together can make anything happen, including miracles!
