Youâre alive. Youâre here. Youâve made it through another day and though there are 365 of them every year and youâve lived through thousands before, you made it through this one. The world is a better place because you are here, living through another today.

if you're anxious right now
Take a deep breath through your nose, hold it for 3 seconds, and blow it out through your mouth. Repeat this 2-5 more times until your heart rate calms down. Someone taught me this and it has saved me on multiple occasions.
If youâre having a bad day...
Change your clothes. Even if youâre already wearing something comfortable, change into something else thatâs still casual and comfy.
Eat your favorite food. A bowl of rice, ice cream, pasta, make a sandwich, anything that makes you happy.
Eat some fruit. A banana, apple, peach, pear, some berries, fruit is always a good option.
Eat some protein. Cheese, meat, eggs, rice and beans, ect. Something to give you energy.
Drink lots of water. Fill up a water bottle and keep it with you, but remember to actually drink it.
Find as many pillows and blankets as you can around the house and pile them on your bed. THE MESSIER, THE BETTER!
Bring your acquired snacks into your room. Even if you donât make a habit of eating in your room, make an exception this time.
Bring a couple of your favorite stuffed animals to share your nest with.
If you have cats, invite them as well.
Watch an episode or two of your favorite show GUILT FREE. Nothing sad! Watch something that will make you smile and laugh a lot. And ENJOY IT. Give yourself this time to decompress without stressing over a million other things. I know it can be hard, but YOU CAN DO IT
Hang a sign outside your door, letting family members/roommates know that you are currently unavailable. Be polite, courteous, and take their needs into consideration if they need something from you, but itâs okay to have a little chunk of time all to yourself when youâre having a tough day. Weâve all been there.
Turn off your phone. Just for a little while so you can completely relax. Stay off social media too - you donât need any drama right now.
Once youâve finished your show and eaten a healthy amount of food, do something productive. Even if itâs just one or two little chores - sweep, do the dishes, tidy up your room, dust, reorganize the bookshelf, whatever. Do something that will make you feel like youâve accomplished something. Even if itâs little, be proud of yourself for each task!
Listen to music while youâre working. iPod, record player, radio, etc. Make it something up beat with a nice and lively tempo.
Dance and sing. I donât care if you dance like a fish out of water and sing like a dog whose tail was stepped on, you are a beautiful contribution to this world so donât be afraid to shine!
Alternate in doing tasks throughout the day with doing things you enjoy. Paperwork and then a walk (fresh air always helps!), mop the floors than read that book youâve been wanting to explore.
Talk to a friend if you need to. If you donât think you have anyone to talk to, let me be the first to tell you, YOU DO! There are thousands of kindhearted people on here who would love to get to know you and want to help you and hear about your day if you are feeling under the weather.
Remember that this is today. Every tomorrow is another chance. Everyone has rough days, and sometimes we get a whole long string of them, but life is so much more than just the bad days. Go to bed knowing that tomorrow is a new start.
The most important exercise youâll do all day.
If you struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, or just plain feeling like a failure, I have a mantra for you thatâs been really helping me out lately:
Just show up.
I used to skip class because the whole thing was so overwhelming: I had to get dressed in something clean even though I never had the energy to do laundry, walk to school, sit in class for up to three hours, plus pay attention, take notes, and participate in discussion. In reality, I was being a perfectionist, and life would have been a lot easier for me if I had Just Shown Up. By staying home because of my depression and anxiety, I wasnât giving myself the chance to do any of that. I was such a perfectionist that being a âbadâ or average student was unthinkable, so I stopped being a student at all.
If youâre having trouble getting something done, Just Show Up. You donât have to be employee of the month. You donât have to be valedictorian. Just Show Up.
ime it also helps to be like âyou dont have to stay the whole time, you just have to goâ bc most of the time once youre there itâs fine. a lot of things are like that, like⌠you dont have to finish the dishes, just start them. a lot of the time once you start a task itâs easier to finish than to stop, especially if you can trick yourself like âafter five more minutes if i still feel bad iâll go homeâ or âafter washing two more dishes i can stop for todayâ
even if you donât finish the task, you started it, and by completing part of it you lessened your future workload and ALSO taught your brain that things may not be as daunting as they seem
This is wisdom! Peace!
you know what years of therapy taught me - Redefine success
so what if no one else gets how the things you define as successes are victories because you have to
so you got to work - success
you used public transport - success
you went to the supermarket instead of ordering online and didnât just buy things you dindât want because you got scared - MASSIVE success
Redefine success, your body moved the goal posts, there is no shame in acknwoledging that

itâs also worth reminding yourself that everyone you admire has failed and everyone you admire is disliked. nobody achieves lofty success through their very first piece of art. there are people, probably lots of people, who think your favourite band are shit. your favourite artists have torn up drafts and thrown them in the bin. you donât have to be achieving something 24/7 and you donât have to impress everybody - nobody does and nobody can.
Reminder: You are not worthless if you lack motivation. You are not worthless if your depression makes it hard to complete tasks. Some days all you can do is simply exist, and productivity doesnât define your worth. You still matter, even on days you feel worthless.
