Cursed Water Chapter 1
[Next]
Where was she?
The last thing that she remembered was being in The Morrignβs domain. Now she was sitting at the base of a giant tree, surrounded by even more giant trees.
Was this a part of The Morrignβs training that she was talking about earlier?
βShe could have at least put me in decent clothes,β She grumbled, staring down at the cute red dress that The Morrign had put her in.
Standing up, her body was stiff, especially her neck.
βOkay,β She breathed, slowly rolling her neck to help with the stiffness. βWhat did Master say to do if you find yourself in an unknown place, Coventina?β The girl mumbled to herself as she inspected the area.
It looked like she had been dropped in a forest. And, with the chill in the air and the position of the sun, Coventina guessed it could be spring, meaning that she could be in the northern hemisphere, probably in a northern country like Canada or Norway.
Extending her magical senses, Coventina couldnβt sense any people nearby by but there was a strange presence. The strange presence felt icky to her.
With no other leads to go on, Coventina headed in the direction of the icky presence.
It was lucky for her that the shoes that The Morrign had chosen had been flat, as she walked across the root-infested ground. The only bad thing was that she was cold in a sleeveless dress, despite the sun rising. The girl summoned a coat from her storage earring.
It took her a while for her to reach her destination, which was a deserted Japanese shrine.
Coventinaβs eyes lit up at the thought that she could be in Japan.
She couldnβt feel any concealed spells or anything else dangerous, then the blonde moved from the treeline into the shrineβs ground.
But when she entered the shrineβs ground, Coventina felt a pulse of energy surge around her.
The world around her became distorted. The sky became red as foul scent filled the air. The icky presence intensified, becoming sickening. What drew her attention was the creature above the dilapidated shrine.Β
It was a worm-like creature with rotten bird wings hanging off its body. Oh, and it was about fifteen meters long.
With no warning, the creature lunged at her. Coventina managed to dodge the creatureβs attack, but she fell to the ground as she did.
βDeath!β She screamed.
The black crystal around her neck sprang to life. Darkness sprang out of the crystal, wrapping around her, before pulling her into the shadows below.
Her heart was racing. Even though she was technically immortal now, she didnβt feel like testing out her new ability.
βWhat is that!?β Coventina screamed at the spirit that resided in Death.
βIt's definitely not a magical creature. I can be sure about that,β Death told her.
βYouβre so helpful,β She grumbled.
Her bright blue eyes glanced up from the shadows to see the creature looking around for her.
As the creature searched for her, Coventina looked around the shrineβs ground to see what she could use for cover or she could launch herself off the building to get hight. Or there was the torii gate, which looked like it was ready to fall over.
βI guess my best option is to launch myself off the shrine and impale it,β She planned.
As the creature circled around the grounds looking for her, Coventina made her to the shrine still in Deathβs shadow. Once at the shrine, she used Death to scale the building and place herself in the centre of the shrineβs roof. Summing Brunnaprinzessin to her hand, shifting the weapon into a spear. She watched the creature circle around the ground, waiting for the right moment to attack.
When she saw the perfect opportunity to attack, Coventina launched herself from Deathβs shadow, aided by her magic. Now she was above the creature. She created a crystal platform so she could launch herself back down at the creature, with her spear pointed out in front of her.
βW-What!?β
Coventina watched as Brunnaprinzessin bounded off the creatureβs skin.
The creature let out some kind of roar before using its tail to hit the fourteen-year-old. The girl barely managed to dodge the attack, leading back down the ruin stone-tile ground.
βWhy did my attack bounce!?β She panicked. βDoes this thing have a magic-infused hind?!β She wondered.
Even if this creature had a magically infused hind that could repel a weapon that was enchanted with mana, it wouldnβt stand a chance against the hardest substance in the world.
Gathering her mana that she needed for her next plan, before casting the spells that she needed.
βMay the weight of Alts pin you to the ground!β
A giant magic circle appeared about the creature. Her spell slammed the creature into the ground, but before it slammed into the ground, she cast another spell.
βImperial Stalagmites!β
Diamonds came jutting out from the ground, ready to impale the hurling creature that was approaching the ground. The creature let out a screeching howl as it was being impaled on the diamonds. A dark purple liquid leaked from the holes where it had been impaled. Once it had finished its dying howl, the creature dissipated.
Coventina stood there slightly confused. All the magical creatures that she had fought in the past always left corpses.
βWhat the hell?β A deep voice from behind exclaimed.
Too caught up in her confusion, she didnβt notice two presences coming up the stairs behind her. The girl quickly turned around to see a man and a woman standing underneath the torii gate.
Both of them were obviously asian. The man was tall, about five feet and seven inches. He had tanned skin with black short hair with bangs that was gel back, with line green eyes. He was dressed in a leather jacket with a dark coloured suit underneath. Coventina was surprised that he didnβt have stubble and a cigarette in his mouth.
The woman had long lavender and baby blue hair, the lavender on top and the baby blue underneath. She had pale skin with chestnut brown eyes. She wore a fitted grey suit with a large satchel hanging off her shoulder.
βDid you exorcise that curse by yourself!?β The woman exclaimed.
βYou mean that monster that was flying around this place? Then yeah,β Coventina confirmed.
Both adults looked mortified at her.
βHow old are you?β The man asked.
βFourteen,β The girl answered.
The mortified look on their face grew.
βNot even in high school yet, and she can take on Grade 1,β The man sighed.
βShe is a foreigner, we would have heard of her,β The woman pointed out.
βYeah,β The man agreed. βWhere did you come from?β He asked.
βI woke up in the forest,β She told them.
The adults looked at her like she had grown a second head.
βDid you sleepwalk here?β The man reluctantly asked.
βUehara!β The woman called to the man in a scolding tone. βThe nearest inhabited village is twelve miles away,β She reminded him. βEspecially in that outfit,β
The adults turned back to the girl to see that the black outfit she was wearing had now been replaced with a red dress. During the time that the woman was scolding Uehara, Coventina had dismissed Death, returned The Morrignβs dress.
βWerenβt you wearing something else?β Uehara confusely asked.
βYeah, but I didnβt need Death anymore?β Coventina answered.
The adults both looked at each other again.
βI didnβt sense any curse energy being used, did you, Kuramoto?β Uehara asked the woman.
βNone at all,β Kuramoto replied.
Coventina cocked her head at their use of βcurse energyβ, it was how she would use mana.
βHow did you defeat the curse- monster?β Kuramoto asked, changing her terminology so Coventina could understand.
βWith my magic,β She told them.
The look that Kuramoto and Uehara gave her told her that they didnβt believe her. So, Coventina lifted her hand up, considering her mana a few feet away from them. Releasing her mana, it crystallised into a tower of crystals. Once again, Kuramoto and Uehara looked at each other.
βWe need to take her back to Tokyo,β Kuramoto stated.
βItβs your job. Iβm only here to assess how you do,β Uehara replied.
βI think this is over my pay grade,β Kuramoto said. βSo, umβ¦β She turned to address the girl but realised that she didnβt know her name.
βCoventina Avalon,β The girl introduced herself, curting as she did.
βWell, nice to meet you, Coventina-chan. Iβm Kuramoto Mieko, and this man is Uehara Ko,β Uehara nodded his head towards Coventina. βWeβre going to take you back to Tokyo, is that alright with you?β She asked.
Coventinaβs bright blue eyes sparkled when she heard Tokyo.
βIβm really in Japan,β She awed.
βYou know youβve been talking Japanese this whole time,β Uehara told her.
Due to how Coventina learnt Japanese - through magical means - she couldnβt tell if she was talking Japanese or English.
βOh yeah,β
βWe probably should stop by a clothing shop before we get to town,β Kuramoto said.
The group started to make their way down the million stairs that led up to the shrine.
βOh, I have some spare clothes,β Coventina told them.
