Beyond preservations of nationalist identity, there is an ethos that surpasses stifling anachronisms and cultural stereotypes. Such a belief is that culture is like a viral organism, constantly mutating and advancing outside the confines of borders. This was historically evident between 323 - 31 BCE, when Hellenic art and science spread across many nations far from Greece, interacting and mutually inspiring other non-western cultures: a constant source of wisdom for the Hellenes. This phenomenon of transnational ideas building was to turn the flicker of Hellenic thought, into an illuminating flame known as the Hellenistic period. An era known for its network of philosophy schools (ακαδημίες), its roaming sophists, its inventors, its influential artistic cannons and the first intercontinental social media network - the Alexander library in Egypt. A global centre for information obsessively compiled from the vast breadth of knowledge, of the then known world. The Alexandria Library was possibly the first social network, for the interaction of curious and inspired minds – a place where cultures and Ideas met. In the 20th century, Hellenic composers such as Iannis Xenakis and Jani Christou embraced a trans-historical philosophy, becoming themselves a continuation of this ethos, an ethos that espoused the inseparable symbiosis of art and science. Xenakis himself was quite conscious of this influence by stating that he felt like a “classical Greek living in the twentieth century”. This became apparent in his philosophical handling of mathematical elements, in both his music and architecture. For Xenakis, these elements could be universally found in, and equally applied to, all the arts/sciences. After all, it was the technological advances of the 20th century, which saw such artists reunited with an ideal that closely paralleled the Hellenic ethos that preceded it. In this spirit, we fast-forward to 2015 where contemporary Hellenic artists and writers who are exploring such an ethos. Philosophy, the sciences, technology and art, are all encompassing elements in pursuit of a greater awareness of knowledge (λόγος). Here on Hellenic Ēkhōs, we will explore such thoughts; a golden thread, which echoes through to those, who dare to traverse the bounds of immediate paradigms, and instead, delve into the application, discourse and analysis of Hellenic thought – inward, upward and onward… The cosmos is waiting.
