Let’s Play as a concept can be traced back to its comedy roots in Mystery Science Theater 3000. You’d be hard-pressed to find a member of the LP subforum who hasn’t seen MST3K.  Making fun of video games as you play them is only a small step from making fun of movies as you watch them, and LP is enabled by the internet and advances in video technology.  Something Awful, as well, was always influenced by MST3K, now Rifftrax, and Lowtax1 has sponsored Rifftrax Live events and even made videos with Mike Nelson.  One thing I’ve heard about both Nelson and Lowtax is that, in person, they can be insufferable to be around, because while they’re both very funny, they “can’t turn it off,” so to speak.  Their comedy persona continues into the real world and real situations that require compassion and empathy.  This flavor of aggressive apathy (for lack of a better term) became an integral part of SA and then LP culture, and we are still working through its repercussions today.
