i think the fact that i don't like faces and looking at any kind of face requires that i suppress my distress response and the fact that i don't understand why people get freaked out when hagfish evert their tooth plates may be connected.

Me: i support the fetishistic nature of this content but NOT the mischaracterization
quick wave studies.
We report: we see half a dozen sunrises on the train. The sun emerges from behind the clouds, casting an orange glow across the whole sky, then the clouds swallow it back. Minutes later, another place, the shape of the clouds has changed, but it happens again the exact same way.
one of my favorite hagfish studies (which is where my current blog title comes from) is an analysis of how hagfish pass through small openings. the ability to pass through small openings is a major component of their feeding strategy (both as scavengers and as hunters), and several species of hagfish have been observed to inhabit burrows, so it's important to be able to do this when you're a hagfish.
some things i like about it are: it is interested in hagfish as living organisms, primarily for the sake of learning about hagfish. it examines hagfish from both major genera (Eptatretus and Myxine). when the hagfish used in the experiment were placed in the tank they lived in while not being tested, they were observed to be particularly interested in exploring the corners of their tank. so the testing tank was designed to have a 'corner' with a gap, encouraging the gap-squeezing behavior the researchers wanted to see organically.
the last part is what makes it my favorite. there aren't very many studies focused on hagfish behavior and cognition. this is partially a result of the massive lack of knowledge about these animals but also feels to me like a consequence of the way many people think about them. the primitive, basal hagfish, a lower, devolved organism. probably not much going on in there.
so the choice to look at how the hagfish behaved in the holding tank and shape the experiment to that behavior is very exciting! additionally, there are a number of very specific observations made about the hagfish ability to squeeze through small openings (both species were successful at getting through gaps that were half of their initial body width) and how several unique aspects of their biology influence their ability to do this that i think are really cool.

every single person in the world should learn some basic physiology. i don't know how you're comfortable walking around operating that thing without knowing at least a bit about how it works
Little ones finally got their cloaks and now they are ready to go outside and enjoy some moss 🌿
i was writing a dumb post that i probably wouldn't have actually posted because it wasn't funny and my dog walked up, laid on me, and started licking my hands until i put my phone down and petted him instead. service dog.

Some things are easier to paint from life, rather than a photo... aquatic macroinvertebrates are not one of those things
