I did some reading once about black soldier fly composting but the only fact I retained is that 5,000 maggots can eat about the mass of one pineapple in one day. If you have a day to dispose of a pineapple, give it to 5,000 maggots. If you have to feed 5,000 maggots for one day, they can have a pineapple. If you want to know how long it will take your 5,000 maggots to eat a pineapple: about a day.

I don't know why this went into long-term memory. Ultimately I'm glad black soldier flies are not my responsibility

hello fellow hagfish enthusiast! i'm also so happy to see other people who love and celebrate the humble hagfish, animal of all time. at the moment i'm trying to map out their nervous systems. mostly this means reading a series of papers that say 'hagfish don't have nerves here.' 'yes they do.' 'okay they do but they're weird nerves.' they're all going to be weird nerves! hagfish don't have myelin!

#hagfishposting #you would think 'do hagfish have nerves in their main heart' would be an easier question to answer than 'how do they sexually differentiate #because that IS a question that can be answered with the easiest type of hagfish to procure: dead ones.#HOWEVER. HAHAHAHA.#truly it is bad enough i am probably just going to have to get really good at histology get a microscope and be a really good spouse #to make up for the fact that someday this is inevitably going to escalate to dissecting hagfish in the kitchen
