Okay so it wasn’t quite how I remembered it, Kevin was a villain from his first draft after all. I did not record this and i was not present for this interview, it was recorded by my friend Kiri in 2013 and is the same chat with Duncan Rouleau that spawned this sound byte as well.
KIRI: “Uh, I know Kevin did not develop in Ultimate Alien the way you guys envisioned, but what do you think now about the person he is in Omniverse?”
DR: “I really like him! He had started off... I’ll give you the whole... trajectory. It was originally Kevin 11 was his name and he was supposed to have an Omnitrix. Because Ben could only do ten characters. But then once we went to Ben 10,000 and the Ultimate characters, uh, that was kind of dropped. He was gonna have... his Omnitrix went to eleven. And so... but he was gonna be evil. But, uh, and a little bit of an older brother. That was where it initiated. So then he became kind of the bad influence, like the... “Hey, come on over and let’s use our powers for... whatever we want! Whenever we want!” And then felt betrayed by Ben, because he... he got out of hand.
Then in the, uh... then in the Ultimate stuff, he was cool but I gotta -- I always felt he was under-utilized in a way, you know, for bein’ the badass that he was supposed to be, he was kind of a little tepid.”
KIRI: “Yeah, he sat on the sidelines a lot more than he used to ever do.“
DR: “And now I think he’s... I think he’s stepping up in the little bits and pieces we see him in. But really, honestly, the show was an attempt to kinda... center in more on Ben, and take away his support -- that support group, and see if we could build up the Plumbers.“
KIRI: “Oh, we love it. We love Rook and everybody in there.”
DR: “So... he’s being handled fine. There isn’t any plans for him in his own series. Gwen? Gwen, though...”
KIRI: “It’d be good if he’s in with her. That’s fine by us.”
DR: “That’s right. In some ways it’d be... it’d be best.”
