By the time Sam reached the bait and tackle shop, it was after closing time and the customers had long since left. The main reason she preferred to keep it at the bottom of her delivery list, truth be toldâcarrying a compost box of worms was usually much easier when there were no potential collisions. âHey,â she greeted Ambrosia, casually placing the compost box onto the store counter before she gave her customary dad joke. âHow did the worm feel after getting cut in half?â She only gave a momentâs pause before a soft snort emitted. âHe was beside himself.â And then, because she had the humor of a 40-year-old father of five, Sam grinned. âSorry... That one just wormed its way out of my mouth before I could stop it.â

Generally speaking, it wasnât everyday that Sam commandeered one of her brothersâ apartments. In fact, she was much more prone to only stopping by every once in a while, when she knew that they would be home and she usually called beforehand. But in her defense, Theo was the only Davenport who adopted lambs as his childrenâwhich made him instantly much cooler than the others. Especially from where she was sitting in his kitchen, equipped with her laptop and a few dollars to splurge. âOoo! Okay! Okay, but like... what about these pajama onsie things?! They're purple and leopard printed! Very chic.â
Samâs intentions were innocent enoughâher curiosity stemming from the last family group chat sheâd skimmed through. She didnât want to pry, of course. But at the same time, itâd been so long since Cam was truly happy... At the end of the day, she couldnât help herself. âSo uh...â She tried to refrain from smiling, doing her best to look the picture of benevolence as she leaned against the bed of her truck. âWas the lamppost thing on purpose âcause you knew sheâd fix you up?â But in the end, a lifelong influence of Theo, Lip, and Nate had the corners of her mouth tugging into a subtle, sly smirk.
đĽ - What is their reaction to severe storms (Tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.)Â
 This has been answered here!Â
 âď¸ - Do they enjoy stargazing?Â
Yes, though Sam is an absolute geek about it. She has a pair of binoculars, a star chart, and even a small journal with an observation log. Not only does she know a lot about the constellations and planets, but she follows NASA's latest announcements like a hawk. She's currently gushing about the "great conjunction" of Jupiter and Saturn, and how separations of less than 10 arcminutes have only happened 5 times since the year 1200.

đŚ - What are some rainy day activities for them?
Truthfully, rainy days drive Sam a bit crazy. When she canât get out in the fields, she tends to find other things to occupy her time withâreading some books, fixing the farm equipment, putting rainboots on the goats etc. Unless there's a proper thunderstorm, in which case she's watching it front row and center.
đĽ - What is their reaction to severe storms (Tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.)Â
As mayor, Julesâs job is to ensure that every citizen follows the appropriate guidelines put in place by the local weather channels and emergency services. She organizes drive-throughs for canned goods, blankets, water bottles, and more. And then, once sheâs handled everyone elseâs safety, she tries not to panic at any loud noises and probably finds little games and activities to do with Lorena (to keep both of them calm).
Not at all. In fact, when she was a kid, Sam used to sneak out onto the back porch and watch the lightning strike the clouds. She thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread, and honestly, she still likes to watch the sky during storms.
Given their importance to the LGBT+ community, Sam thinks rainbows are pretty rad. She even has a tiny rainbow flag mounted to the dashboard of her truck.
âď¸ - What are their favorite activities for when itâs cold/snowy out?
Having lived in Wakefield most of her life (and in the Middle East during the rest of it), Jules has never actually seen snow outside of movies and television. But when it gets cold, she likes to take Lorena out for hot chocolate and churros.
Sam? Can you list your top three of crushes please?
âNaw, mâafraid I canât. Sorry âbout that.â
The actual answer is that there are too many to even attempt to list. Ambrosia, Gabby, Julie, Jocelyn, Ade, Dianne etc. Not to mention, all of the girls who were mean to her back in school and then magically became attractive after they hit adulthood. Basically, sheâs hella gay for half of Wakefield and itâs a Problemâ˘, but sheâs handling it... Kind of. [ @andthereweresparks , @qvietwhispers , @perfectregret , @intellectas ]

The dinner table is alive with its usual chaotic energy; a muddled din of voices talking over each other, hungry stomachs scraping at plates, and forks clashing as at least three people try to swiftly stab the last smothered enchilada off the platter in the middle of the table.
The conversations all bleed into one another, which is why Sam doesnât expect when her mother addresses her directly.
âOh, Sammy! The Memorial Day Parade still needs volunteers for the food stands, so I signed you up!âÂ
Sam blinks, brow furrowing. â... What?â
âYeah, well...â Annabeth pauses to take another bite of food, subconsciously leaving her daughter in a silent panic for another minute. âThey need someone smart who can keep up with the money.â
âBut... I got a biology essay due on Tuesday.â
âThatâs alright! The paradeâs on Friday.â
Samâs eyes close and she has to remind herself to breathe. âI know. But I wasnât expectinâ to even go to the Memorial Day Parade.â
âWell now you can.â
âNo,â Sam stresses this point, as if her life depends on it. âI canât âcause I got a biology paper due on Tuesday.â
âSamââ
âNo.âÂ
The very idea of it makes her hair stand on end; a hot, sticky feeling brewing in the pit of her stomach like a bad omen. And the frustration of her mother knowing exactly why she doesnât want to goâthe unspoken reason that the entire house has danced around for most of her lifeâonly makes it feel that much more like some kind of betrayal.Â
Annabeth, for her part, remains calm in the face of defiance. âSam, it wonât be that bad. You only have to talk to the people who go to your booth.â
âI ainât goinâ.â
... Well, until the defiance continues, and then her patience (as only a mother of five children can fully understand) evaporates into thin air. âYES, you are. I already signed you up. Thatâs the end of it.â
âItâs the end of it âcause I ainât goinâ,â Sam mumbles.
âJesus Christ,â Annabeth laughs, the kind of humorless laugh thatâs typically reserved for the likes of Theo or Lip; the kind that happens right before she starts flinging her slippers around the house and threatening to ground everyone for the next twenty years. But she doesnât do either of those things. âFor one day, can you PLEASE just beââ Her temper gets the better of her, and she nearly finishes her sentence before she stops herself; as if suddenly realizing who sheâs directing her syllables toward.
Normal.
The word remains unspoken, but it hangs heavy in the air between them; both Davenport women staring unblinkingly at each other, raw and angry, and each looking as if theyâve just been slapped across the face by the other.
The usual din of dinner has long since quieted; several eyes nervously watching the pair as if theyâre waiting for an atomic bomb to drop.
Sam drops her fork onto her plate with a clatter. Her tongue runs over her top teeth, preparing itself for a vicious pettiness only capable of being delivered by fourteen-year-old girls. â... Your food needs salt,â she mumbles, voice cracking with a hurt that stings even as she drags her chair back with a sharp scrape against the weather floorboards.
The silence that ensues is heavy; breaths being held as footsteps stomp down the hallway, followed by the telltale slam of a bedroom door.
At the end of the table, Rhett exhales slowly, eyes fluttering closed. He shakes his head, giving Annabeth a silent but withering look of disappointment (one that strikes a particular resemblance to the one Sam had just given her). He wordlessly hands his hardwon enchilada over to Lip, and then disappears down the hallway in his daughterâs footsteps.
Sam doesnât go to the Memorial Day Parade, and Annabeth doesnât ask her to. It takes another week and a half for the two of them to talk to each other again; for Sam to finally relent, when her mother bursts into tears at the foot of her bed, clinging to her with every limb as she apologizes profusely and promises that she doesnât think of her as anything close to nontypical.
Soon enough, they fall back into a usual routine. Memorial Day passes in a whirl. Sam aces her biology paper. Annabeth bakes cookies to celebrate. The farm gets new patches of spring crops planted for the fall harvest.
But in the back of Samâs mind, quiet and unrelenting, the feeling of other makes itself at home.
