a mid day stop at dooseyâs market was not an original plan when leah awoke that day but they didnât intend on keeping their fridge just ever so slightly open all night long. at least leah knew she could blame the fact of her recklessness on the events of the previous night and not her general inability to be perceptive. two avocados in hand, leah turns to the nearest person. âhow do you tell if avocados are good?â they question, lightly poking one of the green shells in their hand. âis it soft or hard?â
alice  was dead tired ,  seven  days  in  working  doubles  because  their  head  waiterâs  wife  had  gone  into  labor  early  and  they  had  all  rushed  him  out  the  door  with  well  wishes  and  promises  they  could  keep  things  afloat  the  moment  he  got  the  news .  but  as  sweet  as  the baby  was ,  alice  was  tired .  it  took  her  a  moment  to  realize  someone  was  asking  her  a  question ,  but  in  two  seconds  flat ,  she  was  smiling ,  full  of  warmth ,  and  poking  the  accused  avocado .  â hm .  i  think  a  soft  one  is  ready  to  use  now  and  a  hard  one  will  need  to  sit  out  for  a  few  days  before  itâs  ready ?  donât  at  me  on  that ,  though ,  my  dad  is  the  one  who  makes  a  killer  guac . â she laughed .
â  âŚ547-068,  text  me  later.  â a  goodbye  in  form  of  her  pearly  whites  shining  in  a  wide  smile,  the  one  that  you  can  really  recognize  her  from  in  the  first  seconds.  sheâs  about  to  get  back  to  her  book,  currently  reading  ted  budy  :  conversations  with  a  killer  by  hugh  ayensworth  (  which  definitely  made  her  bare  with  a  glare  or  two  in  lukeâs  diner  ),  but  she  doesnât  even  lay  her  brown  eyes  on  the  pages,  as  she  feels  a  stubborn  gaze  on  her.  turning  around  on  her  seat,  her  eyebrows  making  a  sudden  up  movement. â  what ?  ⌠ yeah,  it was my number.  donât  give  me  that  look.  â definitely  not  a  real  number.  she  changed  a  digit or  two  ⌠ or  five.  but  she  just  didnât  want  to  embarrass  the  poor  guy  in  front  of  everyone.  bonus  points  for  being  a  nice  person  ?
watching  this  absolute  train wreck of  an  interaction  was  painful  enough  as  it  was before  alice  was  caught . this guy was definitely worth  cringing  over ,  but  her  nosy  ass  just  couldnât  leave  well  enough  alone ,  not  when  he was  fumbling  any  chance  ( none )  he  had  with  sydney  conway .  when  she  became  the  object  of  sydneyâs  attention ,  caught ,  she  felt  herself  fumbling , too . she looked both ways , putting  on  the  most  inconspicuous  look  she could , as if to say â who , me ? â  her  eyes  shot  down  to  the  book  in  her  hands ,  as  if  she  had  really  been  reading  instead  of  pretending  to  as  she  eavesdropped .  whoops ?  â i  didnât  say  anything , â  she  said ,  a  tease  and  a  promise ,  as  she  put  her  book  down .  â itâs  nice of you to let  him  down  easy .  i  wouldnât exactly want  him  to  have  my  number ,  either , â  she  admitted ,  picking  her  book  back  up . but her  old  copy  of  stardust just wasnât drawing her  back  in like it  usually  did .  instead ,  her  attention  was  pulled back  to  sydney .  â are  you  really  reading  a  book  about  ted  bundy  right  now ? â she asked with a grin .
Q&A: this week, the stars hollow gazette sat down with alice alvarez. if you love alâs pancake world as much as we do, you may know her as alâs daughter. our peek into her life gave us a glimpse of what makes her so much more.
what impression do you think you give when someone meets you?
â if iâm lucky, theyâll think of me as the kind of person who would bring them chicken noodle soup when they have the flu⌠but also the kind of person who would tell them the truth when their boyfriend is an asshole and they need to hear it. â
what are your views on romantic relationships? do you see yourself growing old with a significant other?
â theyâre nice until theyâre not. i like the part where everything is dreamy and sweet, but i hate the part where you realize you canât stand each otherâs families and donât agree on anything that matters. it turns out, liking the same fleetwood mac album isnât enough to base a relationship off of. but just because i havenât found the right person, that doesnât mean i wonât. iâm not exactly looking for them, but if theyâre out there, i do hope i find them. someone who enjoys putting up with me, who will cook with me, who likes the things about myself that even i donât like⌠it sounds like a dream. â
what would your younger self think of you now?
â my answer on this changes daily. sometimes i think sheâd be proud of me for sticking around and seeing things through here, rather than leaving when i was supposed to and bailing. other times, i think sheâd be disappointed that i stuck around and didnât leave, even when things settled down. i didnât get to do a lot of the things that she wanted to do, but iâve also done a whole lot of things that she was too much of a scaredy-cat to try. i think sheâd be excited about that. or horrified, but iâd take my chances. â

BACKGROUND
(tw illness)
there is no such thing as an accident in the alvarez family. every blessing and every hardship had its purpose. like the secret to her fatherâs world famous sweet & sour sauce and all four of her siblings, alice was a happy surprise. there was never a dull moment in the alvarez household. a moment alone to collect your thoughts? never heard of it. their home brimmed to bursting with loved ones, thundered with voices and children's footfalls, and filled itself with unlimited love. anyone who expected anything less from the proprietor and namesake of alâs pancake world was lying to themselves.
no matter the time of day, there was always something on the stove and in the oven. if someone in town needed help, aliceâs parents showed up armed with a weekâs worth of food. it made sense that their kids were the ones standing up to bullies on the playground and sharing their lunches when their friends forgot theirs. but while the rest of her siblings grew into attitudes and rebellious phases, alice stayed sweet. she gained a reputation for being a do-gooder and a goody-two-shoes, but never let it bother her. much.
as hard as they tried to make it a reality, thereâs no such thing as a perfect family. a loud home meant loud fights. too many teenagers in one place meant tensions ran high. a restaurant in a small town meant money troubles as far as the eye could see. if anyone could survive on love alone, it wouldâve been the alvarezes. then aliceâs mother got sick. with her two older siblings away at college, alice took it upon herself to be her caretaker. her father was deeply in denial, busying himself with work and the restaurant, but alice gave up everything to care for her mom.
headstrong and bullheaded as she was when things got tough, there was no convincing alice otherwise. it took everything they had to keep her from dropping out of high school. for three years, until she was twenty-one, every day was taken up by her motherâs recovery. she wouldnât have had it any other way. and the day the color returned to her motherâs face, alice was, to this day, the happiest sheâs ever been. but those crucial years were gone, her motivation to go to college and leave stars hollow gone with it. where some dreams were lost, countless others took their place; smaller, safer, but dreams nonetheless.
with her motherâs illness behind them, alice was free to let her friends drag out her to bars and brunches and bachelorette parties, which they took full advantage of, shoving yearsâ worth of just being young into a few months. alice saw all the things that had seemed so trivial for what they really were: an excuse to have fun. it took it being pried out of her, but she learned to let loose. do-gooder, goody-two-shoes alice alvarez was hung up for a while. the girl who replaced her danced and laughed and got into trouble and made mistakes and learned to let herself.
the woman who replaced that girl is the product of their small town. sheâs had her heart broken by hometown sweethearts, sheâs broken the hearts of just as many, and she keeps falling anyway. sheâs a hypocrite to her friends â saying yes to everything they want, telling them to go for things, and giving advice where she has no right to â but never taking big risks herself. people have expected her to take over her fatherâs pancake world for so long that she sort of expects it, too. despite it all, sheâs happy waiting tables, balancing the books, and trying over and over to perfect her popâs recipes. but at the same time, a familiar thought runs through her head:
