abigail and julian have been enjoying each otherâs company for a little over a century. it started back when abigail had only recently begun trying to practice magic (something she was not very good at, by the way), and she was looking to any and all sources to get the job done. she wanted to save a life already gone from the earth, and being young and naive and even a tad ignorant, she didnât understand what she was asking for. when natural magic inevitably failed her, she turned to bad deals with monsters and demons, trading away things she didnât know sheâd need or that sheâd miss (including her soul to an extremely powerful demon named âeleiraâ). ultimately, demon magic took her a little further towards her goal, but ended up being a farce; she could bring back a body, but not a soul. zombies were not what sheâd had in mind, but the deal was struck, and she couldnât take it back. finally starting to come to grips with the consequences of her actions, abigail became extremely afraid of what was to become of her when her time with her magic was up. it was difficult to find a manner of protection strong enough to keep away all the horrors sheâd brought onto herself, and, eventually, she cracked under the pressure and tried to ask god for help (having been raised baptist). this proved unrewarding, however, so abigail took the matter into her own hands, using her borrowed demon magic to summon an angel for protection. at the time, though, abigail still had trouble stomaching a lot of what witchcraft required, and would replace items in rituals with less grotesque ingredients (which was part of the reason a lot of her magic was so lackluster). this caused a bit of a rift in the spell, causing her to summon only half an angel; julian, the nephilim. their first meeting was less than stellar, as julian was on the run from heavenâs soldiers (nephilim being considered abominations), and he certainly let abby get an earful of his displeasure. when he finally stopped shouting and asked why sheâd summoned him in the first place, julian heard her out. when she asked for protection, he wasnât thrilled; humans were the cause of all his problems, so what could this human offer him? it came to him that should he magically link with abigail, he, too, would be protected in turn. angels couldnât harm mortals, after all. and so a deal was struck, and julian linked his power and soul with abigailâs own. this deal quickly turned sour in julianâs favor, however, as abigail began to abuse her newfound abilities. the years passed and abby would decide she didnât want to feel certain things anymore (pain, sadness, guilt, regret, fear), and what would she do? sheâd link those feelings to julian, who would feel them in her stead. abigail got into a fist fight? sheâd sport the black eye, but julian would feel the pain. abigail lost her first husband? julian would feel the grief. abigail needed to replace one of her internal organs? abigail got shot? abigail walked through fire? julian. julian. julian. after her double homicide in 1963, it was julian that rescued her from prison. the two were no longer quiet about their dislike of each other, either (not that julian had ever been quiet about it, actually), and the two would occasionally get into monstrous physical altercations because of this. but at the end of the day, the two still benefited from one another; abigailâs soul was safe from eleira, and julian was safe from the hunt for his head. with the establishment of the department for magical control and containment, julian and abby had to fly more under the radar. abigail took on a new last name after the escape from prison, and julian didnât stray as far from his charge as he used to, the two keeping close company in abbyâs new york apartment. they can still often be heard screaming at each other, however, by neighbors and sometimes even customers. with less ability to have a life of his own thanks to the departmentâs restriction, julian has taken to being extra knowledgeable about abigailâs life, relationships, and well being (read as: heâs bored and extremely nosy), and will make snide comments and judgements about a lot of it. julian basically became abbyâs mom friend. suddenly, her alcoholism had to go. she couldnât hang out with that person. those monsters were bad news. she shouldnât smoke. all the guys she dated were awful. all this and more was brought to abbyâs attention, and she hates it more than anything; sheâd much rather just get into a fist fight with julian than hear him nitpick about her life. one could argue that the two do care about each other in some way, but it is most certainly not romantic, and very much unhealthy. but at least they arenât dead.
