I love the little detail of Naoki’s older brother saying that the pancakes never tasted very good. Because it uses the pancake metaphor for their parent’s love and affection to show how even though Naoki envied his older brother for all of the love that his parents gave him, that love wasn’t good for him either because it was still conditional, and impure, not cooked all the way through like the pancakes. And it serves to further humanize his brother and make them understand each other. And also shows how Naoki’s goal of achieving pancakes, or parental love was never a worthwhile endeavor to begin with because even if he had gotten it, it still would have been conditional and the perfect life that he wanted to have like his brother was all an illusion. But, they have each other now.
