Glow !!

I have to say, I absolutely love this series from the bottom of my heart. The message that at least I took away from it is that sometimes bad things happen to good people, and it sucks, but life goes on. The people on the street continue to read the news paper, the factory fires up in the morning. The world doesn't stop when your world crumbles.

To me it's about violence. The random acts of violence that happen to someone every day for no reason other than they were there. The decision to have the killer be revealed to be just some guy who thought it was deserved, the mansion accidentally going up in flames, the detective happening to pick Ivory as his target... It's all just random violence that could have happened to any of us. Hell, it might happen to some of us. But just because it may happen or did happen doesn't always mean that our life ends. We have to keep going after the fact. And to me that's what this ending represents. The tomorrow that we have to face after the fire. The next week, the next month, the next year. One foot in front of the other despite how heavy it feels.

And I want to say, I feel like this series gives a good perspective on what it's like to be part of a group of people who are subjected to more random violence on average. Perhaps no one would have been murdered had it been a man. Perhaps Ivory wouldn't have been targeted had she not been a woman. Perhaps the manor wouldn't have burnt down had Kantje just been paid a reasonable wage. I guess I can't help but look at the series from the lens of a woman and just go "yeah that sounds about right." I'm not surprised or angry about how it ended because in my life experience thats just how things go. I'm not sure if Ivory meant it to be a parallel to womanhood and societal oppression, but I see it's implications woven through the series.

I also enjoy that it's not really a good ending, nor is it a bad ending. It just, ends. This isn't a story. As someone in the comment section said, it's just life. In reality, we all knew that no one was making it out of that manor. The smoke got to them well before the flames did. Hell, the only reason Seraptor survived is that Ivory pulled him out. And it wasn't some sort of miraculous save either. He's permanently disabled because of it, the consequences of this day will live with him forever, just like it would in real life.

Seeing some of the reactions to the episode really makes me think that perhaps we were looking at Whitepine wrong. It wasn't a story. It never was.
