and when i say palia-like i mean in the ways that matter the most to Me ie extremely character and narrative forward, good balance for resources, good balance for huntables FUCK THE OGOPUU ALL MY HOMIES HATE THE OGOPUUS, relationship building that feels natural, consistent worldbuilding, npcs that feel like real people with agency, mc real affect on the world,, like fuuuuuuuuuck this is what palia should be it's what i want it to be and it's AAAGGGGHHHHHHH

i'll be honest the art style is genuinely not appealing it feels so mobile game to me But,,, i will not judge a book by it's cover.....
though it seems there's a third game (my time at evershine) that visually is SO much closer to palia and i'm really excited for that!! i'm really hoping i like portia (and perhaps sandrock) because if i do there might be a viable palia competitor... (genuinely the gameplay portion of the evershine trailer just fucking is palia literally that's a palia screenrecording like damn girl. okay.)
it's been a while since I played Portia but I remember enjoying it up until it Pissed me Off but I do not remember what it did oTL. I know it felt very fun but unpolished and clunky to me though.

I definitely feel like Palia is kind of uniquely character-driven in a way most other games are absolutely lacking?? so I'm also frustrated patting the table since I stopped playing. but that being said, ummm
Paleo Pines is a cozy farming style game focused on ranching and creature taming (the creatures are dinosaurs) which I feel fits a similar niche. I enjoyed it a lot, but I think the characters are a little lacking, but the gameplay was a lot of fun for me.
Snacko is still being developed and it's a little chaotic but it has a really good vibe and you get to be a kittycat. the devs are also extremely cool
I just installed the Fae Farm demo but have yet to try it
for 2d farming type things, I've been playing Research Story, which is a little extremely low pixel stardew-like that I also got to follow the development of and the maker is extremely cool
I started playing Roots of Pacha which initially gave me kind of a red flag bc I am Really Uncomfortable with characters with feathers in their hair, so grain of salt with it, but it's been fun and interesting, but honestly the character design in it falls flat for me a lot

Grimshire is also early access so it's not finished, but it's an absolutely grim 2d animal character-forward farming game I am extremely excited about
This is a reach but specifically bc of shared Hassian love: Red Dead Redemption 2 is obviously way violent and brutal etc, but it also has Charles who feels very spiritually similar to Hassian for me in his soft-spoken frustrated way. If you don't know anything about the game, it's made by Rockstar so grain of salt about how much they love violence as humor/etc, but it is bizarrely one of the most character forward games I've played in forever.
Cult of the Lamb?? it's got very top-down action fighting stuff a la Hades/etc, so not sure about recommending it, and it's all its own flavor of edgy funny cult stuff, but its gameplay is very smooth and taking care of my cult left me with a similar sort of obsession Palia did
Sky: Children of the Light has a lot of cozy vibes and casual multiplayer-ness similar to Palia but also ╮(╯▽╰)╭ I had to uninstall it bc it was making me Evil and I don't know why. it just frustrated me in some terrible way. that being said it's also free to play so easy to pick up and try to see how you feel about it. it's basically multiplayer Journey
I think that's all I got from browsing my steam library. obviously Your Mileage may Vary with all of them, since everyone has their own preferences etc, but hey! at least you have some things
yeah i tried my time at portia and dumped it after an hour akljdhg it felt extremely unpolished to me - even more so than early palia did which is so funny lol maybe i could enjoy it a different time but as it stands, it's def not a good replacement for palia specifically. sandrock has been a lot more enjoyable and i can see why people enjoy it as a palia-adjacent game, but it still doesn't quite hit the mark for me for a few reasons :/ i have a lot of thoughts about that though so aljhdg
also absolutely!! palia gives the player character SO much freedom and most games just have too many constraints. that's not a bad thing obvs but if you're looking for something Like Palia, nothing else really gets there. i have found more games that feel more npc driven with regard to story and relationships, but so many of them still feel very,,, These Characters Exist To Serve The Player yknow? they don't have their own relationships or things going on basically, and while palia isn't Perfect at it, i still think they're pretty good at making it feel like you did just get dropped into a fully realized village with actual people and not little sock puppets.
but anyway!! thank you for the recs!!! i've played/checked out some of these before (sky cotl i remember really enjoying but also SAME something about it ticked me in such a weird way?? i enjoyed the multiplayer aspect at first but it very quickly became annoying to me). i Have been meaning to finally pick up red dead... perhaps i should..... i feel like i've been avoiding it because ik i'm gonna get addicted to it lol

palia is funny cause when they do release a big story patch i get such a high i'm floating in the air the world is sunny nothing can bring me down but that happens like once maayyyyyybe twice a year and the rest of it is spent wildly oscillating between and yay nostalgia i love palia hassian my beloved aaa i remember why i love this game now and this is the worst game in the world the devs murdered my pets everything is shit if i have to fish one more time im gonna kill someone in real life please drop that damn plushie this game sucks ass and if they release one more bundle disguised as gameplay im gonna fucking send it

on one hand, there being like,,, very little effort put into the beach party is dumb as hell (no cutscene, only one outfit change, just more dialogue ping pong) but also if they had done more, locking it behind the bulletin board would also be dumb as hell. this is what i mean when i say they can't for the life of them balance the effort-reward scale of it.
players who sat through all that grinding Should get a cute little cutscene and more outfit changes but also there's so little in the game that putting it behind a tedious, grindy act of hell is rude as fuck. if there was More to the game then i don't think anyone would particularly mind if certain things were locked up, but there isn't! there's not enough in the base game to justify locking a shit ton of players out of that kind of content
the board is meant to be an optional challenge for end game players And all the rewards are supposed to be available at a later time, so they literally can't go crazy with the rewards. but the time put into it is so laughably grindy and padded that everyone who does it feels cheated. devs....... i will pay for the entire team to take a course on game balance </3
Shitty things about being isekaied #34; every time I use the restroom I automatically reach for my phone I left in my jacket pocket back on earth, and my hand goes exactly where I keep my knives on my belt, so I always walk out of the john with a fresh hand wound

Shitty things about being isekaied #64: the town blacksmith is an elf named Gay Simpson and I couldnt explain why that made me laugh and now she won't fix my weapons anymore
Shitty things about being isekaied #83: the four dark lords of this world look almost identical to abba which cant be intentional but when they line up on horseback its so uncanny i cant help but wonder if someones fucking with me
