I started rewatching House MD and I've been chewing on viewing the whole show as House, Cuddy and Wilson all just having exactly the same goal and basically just being one angry horny guy stuck in new jersey actually
every list keeps sucking my time at portia/sandrocks dick so i might have to try one,,, 30 buckaroonies though rip
i'll be honest the art style is genuinely not appealing it feels so mobile game to me But,,, i will not judge a book by it's cover.....
though it seems there's a third game (my time at evershine) that visually is SO much closer to palia and i'm really excited for that!! i'm really hoping i like portia (and perhaps sandrock) because if i do there might be a viable palia competitor... (genuinely the gameplay portion of the evershine trailer just fucking is palia literally that's a palia screenrecording like damn girl. okay.)
it's been a while since I played Portia but I remember enjoying it up until it Pissed me Off but I do not remember what it did oTL. I know it felt very fun but unpolished and clunky to me though.
i was gonna reply via replies but i don't think i can be concise while thinking about recs hol on.
okay so my recommendations!
I definitely feel like Palia is kind of uniquely character-driven in a way most other games are absolutely lacking?? so I'm also frustrated patting the table since I stopped playing. but that being said, ummm
Paleo Pines is a cozy farming style game focused on ranching and creature taming (the creatures are dinosaurs) which I feel fits a similar niche. I enjoyed it a lot, but I think the characters are a little lacking, but the gameplay was a lot of fun for me.
Snacko is still being developed and it's a little chaotic but it has a really good vibe and you get to be a kittycat. the devs are also extremely cool
I just installed the Fae Farm demo but have yet to try it
for 2d farming type things, I've been playing Research Story, which is a little extremely low pixel stardew-like that I also got to follow the development of and the maker is extremely cool
I started playing Roots of Pacha which initially gave me kind of a red flag bc I am Really Uncomfortable with characters with feathers in their hair, so grain of salt with it, but it's been fun and interesting, but honestly the character design in it falls flat for me a lot
then some of the more out-there suggestions
Grimshire is also early access so it's not finished, but it's an absolutely grim 2d animal character-forward farming game I am extremely excited about
This is a reach but specifically bc of shared Hassian love: Red Dead Redemption 2 is obviously way violent and brutal etc, but it also has Charles who feels very spiritually similar to Hassian for me in his soft-spoken frustrated way. If you don't know anything about the game, it's made by Rockstar so grain of salt about how much they love violence as humor/etc, but it is bizarrely one of the most character forward games I've played in forever.
Cult of the Lamb?? it's got very top-down action fighting stuff a la Hades/etc, so not sure about recommending it, and it's all its own flavor of edgy funny cult stuff, but its gameplay is very smooth and taking care of my cult left me with a similar sort of obsession Palia did
Sky: Children of the Light has a lot of cozy vibes and casual multiplayer-ness similar to Palia but also ╮(╯▽╰)╭ I had to uninstall it bc it was making me Evil and I don't know why. it just frustrated me in some terrible way. that being said it's also free to play so easy to pick up and try to see how you feel about it. it's basically multiplayer Journey
I think that's all I got from browsing my steam library. obviously Your Mileage may Vary with all of them, since everyone has their own preferences etc, but hey! at least you have some things
[img id] Painterly, cel-shaded digital artwork of a medieval-style dragon protecting an isometric chunk of battleground. The dragon is two-legged with a long neck, golden wings, and a variety of swords collected in its teeth, blade-first. Its head is red like flames with a doglike snout. The dragon's tail playfully ends upwards in a golden, leafy fleur in the style of illuminated flowers. A shield rests across one of its wings towards an unseen foe, stopping a thrown axe in its tracks. Littering the battlefield are the dragon's past victories: Daggers, swords, blood splatters, and a sad little skull under one leg, including vertebrae dissolving into the dirt. [/id]
like yeah in theory there’s nothing inherently wrong with liking and sympathizing with the villain of a story and even projecting onto them a little bit. it’s fine. we all do it. villains are interesting, they’re meant to be. but when the villain in question IS textually sort of emblematic of racism and assimilation and is shown to actively and knowingly work with klan members, like… idk! i don’t think the problem there is that I’M to squeamish to, like, engage with a character that has “dark themes”. i think they set up a character to functionally be a personification of white supremacy and for some reason you saw yourself in that! let’s sit with that!

going to the gender doctor has been some of the most exhausting shit in the universe bc for some reason their attempts to respect me have resulted in simply not listening to me anymore
"what do you want to be called"
-> "I literally do not care. use my legal name"
"but what do you Want to be called"
-> "if you want, you can use my legal nickname"
"but why is that your name?"
-> "that is the official shortening of my legal name"
"but what do you Want to be called"
-> "I literally do not care"
"we should probably use your legal name just in case"
-> "??????? ya ?????"
like my guy i expect you to just use my legal name in legal settings idk what has happened here that makes them think this is helping me I don't want to argue about what my name is every time i go to the doctor

Threadbare is a “visual” “”novel”” about a martyr exacting revenge on the prophet who foretold her death. Make him pay! Fail upward! Change nothing! Fulfill your awful, awful destiny!
Threadbare features:
The indomitable power of spite, through which all things can be accomplished!
One-sided(?) tension(??) with the guy you’re doomed to kill!
The machinations of a deeply stupid meritocracy, which asks “what if we put wealthy art patrons in charge of a communications & intelligence agency?”
Running errands against your will!
High effort low art! Low effort high art? Low effort low art. It still took me nine months. And it’s not even done!
What I can only describe as a slideshow with quicktime events scored by industrial noise metal!
This guy, I guess !!
This is like… a pre-alpha demo. It covers maybe a third of the story, and its code is held together by duct tape and a wish. Mostly this is an excuse to get other people to break it so I know what to fix. Enjoy!
I pushed some quality-of-life and accessibility tweaks for Threadbare... You can toggle the typewriter animations and expand the dialogue chains all at once and selectively mute the UI/vox sfx now... never been a better time to bother Kairos, if you haven't already
thank you new folks for reminding me to bother everyone to go bother Kairos... really only a hint of Kairos-bothering in the demo, but more of that planned for the future. Here are some of my favorite panels from the next update I'm working on.
