Hassan is really unusual as a Nasu character in that he clearly has a mysterious backstory that gets teased a lot, but without feeling like Nasu has any interest in ever disclosing it. He has nothing to do with the historical figure he's named after (or in-story, is named after him), he's both alive and dead and can't end himself of his own volition, his powers are compared to Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, he keeps getting the most random cameos in other people's backstories, he remains the most active Grand despite being fired from his job at his introduction, he's conflated with Ziusudra and the archangel Azrael. There's a lot of stuff I don't see being elaborated on and I don't think these mysteries for the sake of mysteries mesh well with Nasu's style. The final cope is OC4 properly revealing him as Azrael if it decides to talk about angels, but I'm not really going in with any expectations for it.

There's a lot to say about what this character doesn't show, but what he actually shows is surprisingly nice and simple. The core thing about his personality is that he's written identically to Fake Assassin. They're so-called zealots feared by their Order of Assassins peers for following extreme standards of conduct (and because they're head-on fighters instead of fighting like assassins), but they're primarily shown interacting with people of different faiths and in that revealing themselves as wonderfully tolerant, merciful, caring and encouraging people when everything before made you assume they held others to the same standards they held themselves. It doesn't work as well in the absence of a Sigma-like character to work with, but I obviously love this parallel.
