here is 3rd image vs final. between these two images was the drawing stage known as hell"coloring and rendering"

are those rough colors/values?

yes! the roughs told me how the values would work with planets in the background. namely 1) some of the foreground elements needed to be removed to fit the planets 2) the planets themselves were going compete a lot with the foreground characters and 3) because of reasons 1 and 2 I could not brute force color this like a ferret with a pack of crayons as I normally do

do you later use them to paint on top of the base colors?

everything got repainted from scratch because I didn't like the roughs. I found a better base for the backgrounds when doing unrelated color practice. It's the one on the right:

So I copy pasted the practice onto the canvas, rotated it and painted the planets on top XD
