[English Subs DL] Banana Fish Stage Play Part 1 & Part 2
Hello, friends~! I come to you this time with English subs for the Banana Fish stage plays~!
Thank you to @emerald-trashart for requesting me to do both plays!
I had such a blast working on it even though it got a bit overwhelming and heavy at times (because Banana Fish (╥_╥))
The stage play is just so amazing, and beautifully made...! I went into this not knowing what to expect, and I came out of it just mesmerized. If you're familiar with Banana Fish, of course it will be as heavy as its source material, but I think that you would enjoy it!
The production did a really great job respecting and staying true to the events of its source, and I think long-time fans would love it ^^
The actors, too...! They were so great at their roles, and gosh the emotions and intensity they portrayed were really convincing. Mizue Kenta and Okamiya Kurumu were so perfect as Ash and Eiji, and their chemistry was just beautiful T^T>
Alright, enough rambling! I'll let the stage play speak for itself!

𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠(𝐬): descriptions of death & suicide.
𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬: my sincerest apologies for the wait on this chapter. new semester of uni started and I've been balancing things as best I can. Chapter 15 should be out in a much more orderly fashion from me, haha!
𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭.
Ring stared at me as we sat inside the rocking carriage.
Our eyes would meet, then his would dart away, the pink of his cheeks reddening each time until I couldn't take it anymore—
Kate: Um, is something the matter?
Ring: !? N-No, it's...nothing.
Kate: Is that so...?
I glanced out the window as Ring's face burnt crimson.
Acting as Vogel's fairytale keeper, I was tasked with accompanying Ring on his mission tonight.
The mission was to eliminate three targets, as there were people in England who were "interfering with Vogel's activities." Darius seemed to consider it quite serious, ordering for them to be taken out immediately.
I'm honestly surprised with how different this mission is from when I accompanied Nica. Though I realize that Nica and Ring have fundamentally different jobs.
I wasn't told who the targets were or how they had interrupted Vogel, I was only told to accompany Ring.
But maybe it's for the best I wasn't assigned to Nica.
I didn't know if I could face him after yesterday's exchange.
Kate: Haah...
Hearing my sigh, Ring straightened up with a resolute expression.
Ring: So you had a fight with Nica?
Kate: Huh? How did you...
Ring: Last night I saw Nica looking troubled for the first time in a long time.
Ring: I asked one of the maids and she said it was because he had spoken with you, so I guessed something must have happened between you two.
I gave Ring a strained smile.
Kate: It's my fault. I didn't consider his feelings and tried to lecture him when, in reality, I didn't know what he'd been through. Thinking back on it, I started to feel down once again.
Ring: Nica doesn't usually let his emotions show often, it's pretty rare.
Ring looked toward me, then away as he spoke.
Ring: And...he looked a bit lonely.
Lonely...
I don't know if it was because we had talked about Nica's past, or if he had something else on his mind. But if Ring, who's lived his entire life with Nica, says he looked lonely, that has to mean something.
Ring: I think Nica probably regrets what happened just as much as you do.
Kate: ...You really think so?
Ring: Yeah, it seems so.
Ring: So I'm sure you both will reconcile just fine.
Ring gave me a soft, encouraging smile, and I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
I'll apologize to Nica when I get back.
Kate: Ring, thank you—
Ring: Nica is amazing. He's clever and can befriend almost anyone. He's also very skilled, so there's almost nothing he can't do.
For some reason, Ring began to talk about Nica's good points out of nowhere.
Ring: We were trying to figure out a problem the other day, and he solved it in an instant.
Ring started to beam brightly.
Kate: I-I see.
Ring: Nica's always the first to help me, and I'm proud to be his brother.
Suddenly, I remembered what Monica had told me.
Nica has always protected Ring.
That probably hasn't changed even now.
To Nica, Ring has always been his family, and I'm sure that hasn't changed for Ring either.
But then, why don't the two of them plan out their happiness together?
To claim you'll be the happiest person in the world sounds like such a selfish thing.
After that, Ring continued to tell me even more about Nica's merits. Though, he seemed to look increasingly worried.
Ring: ...But at some point, Nica's smile started to change.
Ring: Like he couldn't smile from the heart anymore.
As I gave it some thought, Ring continued to speak.
Ring: I'd like to know why, but...I can't seem to figure out what it is.
Ring: But Nica looks like he's having fun when he's with you.
Ring: You surprise him, you make him laugh...and I feel like when he's with you, he smiles like how he used to.
Ring: Honestly, I...I envy that.
Ring's knuckles turned white as he clenched his fists, staring at his lap.
Seeing that, I couldn't help but be honest with him as well.
Kate: I'm envious of you too, Ring.
Ring: Huh...?
Kate: I don't understand Nica as well as you do. I'm afraid I'll say something that hurts him, and I feel like I'll never know how he feels deep down.
Now it was my turn to lace my fingers together tight.
Ring: Even though I've been with Nica since birth, I don't understand everything about him.
I looked at Ring with a start as he spoke.
Ring: I think you're much closer to Nica than me, now.
When I vehemently denied it, Ring gave a hearty laugh and said perhaps our feelings were much more aligned than we thought.
Ring's mission tonight was to eliminate the targets obstructing Vogel, right?
But the carriage dropped us off at—
Contrary to my surprise, Ring continued ahead with cautious steps.
Kate: ...Ring, what was the briefing of the mission again?
In that moment, the only word that floated to the forefront of my mind was "Haus."
If Monica grew up in Haus, then the other two with her must have come from there as well.
They're all people who know of Nica and Ring's past.
There was a nauseous feeling bubbling up at the back of my throat. I glanced up at Ring as he recited the names of the targets.
Ring: Our targets this time are Marc, Tobias, and Monica Hoffmann.
Ring: They have to be eliminated.
Kate: Ah...
It felt as though I had been bludgeoned, my head was pounding. And in the next moment a man rushed at me, sword brandished high.
Ring drew his sword, the discordant sound of metal clanging loudly in the empty halls as he blocked the blow.
???: It's been awhile, Ring!
Ring: M-Marc!
Ring was pushed back little by little with each onslaught of attacks from the man he had called Marc.
Marc: Been a long time since I last saw someone from my childhood. You remember, right!?
Marc: We were together so long, in that shithole called "Haus!"
Ring: !
Marc took advantage of Ring's shock at the mention of Haus. A swift blow sending Ring skidding down the hall.
Kate: Ring!
???: There you are.
Kate: Huh!?
A voice that wasn't Marc's echoed from behind me. Before I could so much as turn my head, I was lifted off the ground.
Kate: Wha...!
The man who had slung me over his shoulder had taken me to one of the rooms in what felt like an instant.
Kate: Ack—
And was tossed unceremoniously to the hardwood floor, landing hard.
Tobias: I'm going to help Marc.
Monica: Take care of yourself, Tobias.
The man named Tobias left the room before I could so much as blink.
Monica: I had my suspicions when I spoke with you, but it seems like you're affiliated with Vogel after all.
When I looked up at her, Monica seemed to have a skeptical look on her face, smiling at me.
Kate: Why would you...?
Before I could even make sense of what was happening, Monica grabbed me just below the jaw and hauled me up with a force so strong that it was hard to believe she was even human. My jaw creaked under the pressure.
Monica: Surely you remember what we talked about yesterday...about how Haus is the worst kind of facility? Running all kinds of experimentations.
Monica's eyes smoldered with fury.
Monica: While we were there, Nica used his powers to force us into the experiments meant for his brother!
Monica: Because of that my life is ruined! I'm an abomination that's caught between human and monster!!
Kate: !
I started at the way her voice grew frantic and anguished.
Monica: We could make Nica happy if we took over for his brother, right? We hadn't even known that each experiment would depend on your ability, so we took the fall for it.
Monica: You've got experience with that, surely. You've had to have been toyed with by him at some point too, right?
I couldn't say anything to that, so Monica continued, even more enraged.
She recounted on how weary she had become after all the experiments she endured due to Nica's power. And how she had vowed to get back at him for her entire life. She had been unable to come across him while in Germany, so she, Marc and Tobias had moved to the United Kingdom to better hone their skills.
All of it was the result of Nica betraying others' trust in him.
What Nica did as a child to protect Ring has come back to haunt him.
Monica: We were failures. Meant to die from the very beginning, I'd come to terms with that. My life didn't matter.
Monica: But those twins were different. Their lives were safe because of their innate ability.
Monica: But Nica still had to go and ruin our lives!
There was a loud bang as Ring, bound by rope, was thrown into the room against the wall next to me.
Kate: Ring!!
Ring: Damn it...where did you even get that kind of ability...!
Monica: No matter how special you might think you are, no one can take on more than one monstrosity by themselves.
Monica's eyes moved from me to Ring in disgust before her gaze drew back to me.
Monica: If you can lure Nica Schwartz to me, that might just save your life.
Monica: Not a bad deal, no?
Her grip started to cut off my airways. Drawing even one breath became a struggle as her fingers squeezed.
Ring: K-Kate!
Even so, I...
Kate: Did you...think I'd agree to that...!
I writhed and twisted my weakening body enough to loosen her grip and slip from her grasp.
Monica: Ugh! You've been tricked by him, haven't you!?
I glared at the trio, coughing and wheezing as I drew in each precious breath.
No matter how much I may hate what Nica's done, I have beliefs that I won't just outright abandon.
Kate: The things Nica had put you through are unforgivable.
Kate: But that doesn't make it okay to try to get revenge on him now!
Monica: You...
Monica grabbed at me again, seizing me by the collar of my dress and pressing a blade to my throat.
Even with the pinch of cold metal digging into my skin and the warm trickle of blood running down my neck, I didn't relent.
Kate: Doing this won't erase the things that happened to you!
Monica: Shut up! What do you know!?
Ring: Stop it!!
As Monica pulled the knife back, I screwed my eyes shut, bracing for the pain.
But instead, I heard a gunshot—
Nica: I don't recall giving others permission to play with my toy.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Nica, who had fired a shot that knocked the knife from Monica's hand.
Monica: Nica Schwartz...!
He stood in the door, gun held firm, with an icy gaze as he stared Monica down. The moment he stepped a foot in the door, all three of the Hoffmann's pulled their weapons.
Ring, taking advantage of Nica's distraction, managed to get out of his restraints and come to my aid.
Ring: Are you alright?
Kate: Yes, thank you...
Seeing the state of my neck, Ring pressed a handkerchief to the open wound. Seeing this, Nica's eyes turned even more frigid in the low light of the room.
Nica: Ring. Get her out of here.
Ring: What?
Nica: Dari's orders. Your big brother will take things from here.
Nica: You're both getting in the way, so go on, off you go.
Ring seemed confused, but upon hearing it was Darius' orders, lifted me into his arms.
Tobias: You're not going anywhere!
Ring was getting ready to jump from the window with me in-hand when Tobias tried to charge us.
Just then, shot was fired.
Kate: Nica!!
The last thing I saw before we jumped from the window was Nica's troubled smile.
Nica had fired a single shot that pierced Tobias' heart.
Nica turned and shot Marc just as quickly in the same manner.
Monica rushed over to them both, but by then, their eyes were vacant, ended swiftly.
Monica: No. No no no, you're kidding me! Wake up...!!
Nica: You came here to take things from Vogel, but you got taken from instead, tragic really.
Glancing down at Monica with a biting laugh, Nica aimed the muzzle of his pistol at her head.
Monica: ...You think I'll just let you do this?
Monica grabbed the barrel of the gun, using the leverage of the grip to throw Nica's body with a great force.
Nica: !?
His body slammed into the back of an open wardrobe, crumpling instantly. Monica stood over him with a renewed anger in her eyes.
Nica: Tsk, what's with the brutish strength...?
Monica: You know exactly what kind of failure you've made me into!
She threw his gun aside and slammed a fist down.
Monica: If you hadn't used your damned ability, things would never have come to this.
Monica: You ruined our lives!
Colossal tears began to spill from Monica's eyes, sliding down her cheeks as she beat her fists against Nica with overwhelming force.
But Nica didn't resist.
Monica: Why aren't you resisting...? Why...!?
Nica: I was just remembering something a foolish robin told me once...
His cheeks had begun to swell, cuts and bruises taking shape on his face with each blow...but Nica simply let Monica vent out her anger.
Nica: You can beat me until you're satisfied. If that's what makes you feel better, I'll accept it.
Nica: But tormenting me now doesn't change a thing of the past.
Monica: What...?
Seeing Nica's vacant stare, Monica glanced back at the corpses of her two brothers.*
Monica: If you don't resist, that's like...saying all the time we spent suffering was for nothing.
As she voiced her thoughts, she took Nica's pistol into one hand—
Monica: How is that any different than saying my entire life until now was a waste...?
With a single shot, Monica's body crumpled against the armoire's door, blood pooling around her.
Nica let out a breath as he leaned against the back wall of it. As Monica's body fell, her arm landed against the door, closing it and trapping Nica inside. At that moment, Nica's caught a glimpse of the familiar scar along the length of her arm, lake blue eyes widened in recognition.
Nica: I was wondering who Monica was...so it was you.
Nica: I didn't know because I only ever remembered our numbers.
The closet door fell shut.
Nica, where are you!?
Ring had escaped out the window with me, but I couldn't stay still after I heard more gunshots. I ignored the warnings from Ring and ran back inside the building.
Ring, who was chasing after me, ran into a neighbor that had reported the incident after hearing me screaming 'no.'
He told me to meet up with Nica and leave, so he could lead the police to the scene to avoid suspicion. We had split up from there.
Kate: !
When I returned to the room that I was taken to at the end of the hall, I found three bodies covered in enough blood to know what had become of them.
My tried my best to keep from collapsing, my legs trembling with each step as I walked further into the room.
Eventually, I heard a noise coming from the wardrobe where Monica was. Approaching with caution, I peered between the tiny crack between the double door—
I managed to pry the door open slightly with all of my strength. My eyes landed on Nica, covered in cuts and bruises.
Nica: Ahh, why did you have to come back?
Kate: Ni...ca...
The faint light of the moon through the window behind me cast a line down his face.
It looked just like the trail of a tear.
Nica: It's pointless for me to try and take a break by myself if someone comes to get me.
Kate: What on earth happened to you?
I struggled to hold back tears from how worn down he looked, frazzled beyond belief at the state he was in. But Nica seemed calm.
Nica: I just let her hit me before she died. I thought it would make her feel better.
Kate: I came here to stop that from happening to you...!
His eyes narrowed as he looked like he wanted to tell me something, grasping my hand.
Nica: Could you close the curtains?
His grip was so weak.
Nica: The light you give off is so bright...it hurts my eyes so much I could laugh...
The sight of him so weakened was so agonizing that all I could do was hug him.
𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬:
*: I opted to flavor the text of this as Monica considering Tobias and Marc family with how they interact. I feel like for the knowledge given about them that they seemed to be a found family unit parallel to what Darius considers Vogel to be.
If you're curious about Darius' 'family' or a deeper insight into how the suitors from Vogel came together, I recommend reading this translation and this one respectively for more information.

Whee, I have Atagigiri!!! LOL apparently due to new info from the historians, his name is actually AtaGIgiri, not Ataki. The spelling has been changed haha.
I love how he calls Heshikiri with "Okatana-sama" 御刀様 LMAO. Like why does it sound so passive aggressive?
Atagigiri: Ah, speaking of which... you don't like talking about the Kuroda family, am I right?
Heshikiri: How did you... Did you...?
Atagigiri has been talking to Nihongou off screen LMAO, he's referring to the convo between Nihongou and Heshikiri in Recollection 22.
Atagigiri: Worry not. Shousanmi will never disgrace you, Okatana-sama.
Normal human speak translation: Don't worry, Nihongou didn't say bad stuff about you.
AGAIN WITH THE NAME!!! It's so polite, but somehow sounds so condescending. Juusanmi is Nihongou, because Nihongou is such an amazing spear he was awarded the third court rank (shousanmi) like he's a person LMAO.
"He-shi-ki-ri-sama"
YES. DO IT.
See. I've been wanting a sword to bully Heshikiri about how he prefers to be called Hasebe, and someone actually does it canonically LOLL. Who better to do it than a sword whose name is literally "I murdered someone"? (that is, a sword with a more violent/cruel name than "Heshikiri")
"Atagigiri" 安宅切 is named that way because it's used to kill someone named "Atagi" 安宅.

Two days after the incident where, at Lars’s request, I escorted Matias to his room,
we attended a social party held at a noble’s estate, as part of the investigation into the inciting books.
(There are more people here than I expected.)
(I’m here as Prince Matias’s companion, I need to be careful not to be rude.)
Achroite has a restrained atmosphere overall, but social gatherings like this are still dazzling.
Perhaps because everyone wears thick coats outside, the women’s dresses here seem more revealing than those in Rhodolite.
(I borrowed an evening dress from the castle, but… I hope I’m wearing it properly.)
(Tonight’s purpose is investigation, so as long as I meet the minimum dress code, it should be fine…)
The reason we’d decided to attend this party on short notice was because of a rumor that a renowned book merchant would be present.
He was a major figure even I knew by name, notoriously difficult, and someone who rarely appeared in public.
At the same time, it was said that he supported promising book merchants, and there was no doubt about the breadth of his connections.
(He’s apparently been staying in Achroite for about half a year…)
(He might know something.)
(…That said . . .)
Woman 1
“Prince Matias, are you here alone?”
Woman 2
“Would you care to speak with us for a moment?”
The Matias who had been standing right beside me moments ago was now surrounded by a crowd of women.
(His popularity really is unbelievable… Some people look like they might faint.)
Matias
“Excuse me, could you please let me through?”
Woman 1
“Oh, don’t be like that. Let’s have a drink together over there.”
Woman 2
“Why don’t we rest somewhere quieter?”
Woman 3
“My body feels so warm… Please, show a little mercy…”
Matias
“……”
(What should I do? I should help, right? But how . . .)
A man’s voice
“Quite the spectacle. The other men look completely stunned.”
At the scoffing voice, I turned around. There stood a merchant in finely tailored clothing.
(……This man……)
The way he casually swirled his glass with a ringed hand, there was no doubt about it.
This was the very book merchant we’d been searching for.
Book Merchant
“Aren’t you joining that group?”
Emma
“…No. My lover is books.”
Book Merchant
“Hahaha, books, huh? I like that.”
He laughed heartily, his large belly shaking.
(I’ve heard he’s difficult, but that his passion and love for books are unmatched.)
(If I face him as a fellow lover of books instead of trying to curry favor, I think he’ll open up.)
Book Merchant
“So the rumors were true, there really is a gutsy woman book merchant from Rhodolite.”
Book Merchant
“And a disciple of Akatsuki, no less. Interesting.”
Book Merchant
“Let’s talk over there.”
Matias
“No. Speak here.”
I turned at the sound of his voice.
At some point, Matias had appeared beside me, calmly adjusting his collar.
Book Merchant
“Finished dealing with the ladies? They’re still staring rather intently.”
Matias
“That has nothing to do with you.”
Matias subtly moved me behind him.
Matias
“We are currently investigating prohibited books.”
Matias
“I assume you’ve heard about the matter in question.”
Book Merchant
“Are you accusing me?”
Book Merchant
“Have you finally started detaining merchants without evidence?”
Matias
“I only wish to speak with you. Detention is not my objective.”
Matias
“However, depending on your words or actions, I may request that you accompany me to the castle.”
Book Merchant
“As forceful as ever.”
Book Merchant
“Isn’t that kind of behavior exactly why the people grow dissatisfied with the royal family?”
Matias
“That remark could, depending on circumstances, constitute lèse-majesté.”
The tension in the air sharpened further.
Emma
“Ah, um…!”
Unable to stand by, I hurriedly stepped between the two men.
Emma
“We just want to catch the person spreading the inciting books and put an end to this unrest.”
Emma
“In the current situation, foreign books are difficult to circulate.”
Emma
“That’s a loss for us merchants, and for the people of this country who love books.”
Book Merchant
“It seems your companion understands the situation well, Prince Matias.”
Book Merchant
“…Very well. For this young woman’s sake, I’ll talk.”
He took a sip from his glass, then let out a deep sigh before continuing.
Book Merchant
“The ones distributing the inciting books are likely a group.”
Book Merchant
“Judging from the pace of production, a considerable number of people are involved.”
Book Merchant
“It’s safe to assume an organization with a clear chain of command.”
(…He’s already seen that much.)
Book Merchant
“Once, I was nearly handed one of those books myself, but I returned it immediately.”
Book Merchant
“You can tell at a glance when something’s wrong, though lately they’ve become more cunning.”
Book Merchant
“Just by the cover or the page edges, it’s hard to spot the difference.”
Emma
“Do you know how many are in circulation?”
Emma
“I think many people may be holding them without realizing it.”
Book Merchant
“What do you think?”
Emma
“I…”
(Considering the number found during inspections and the speed of enforcement, there must be quite a lot.)
(It feels calmer lately—but if that just means they haven’t been found…)
Emma
“I think about one third of the people living in this city have already come into contact with an inciting book in some form.”
Matias
“……”
Book Merchant
“I share your assessment.”
Book Merchant
“I’ve instructed any merchants with connections to report them immediately if found, but . . .”
Book Merchant
“As a result, they’ve begun avoiding us merchants altogether.”
(Which means they’re now using the poor to spread the books…)
Matias
“The man who approached you, who was he?”
Book Merchant
“Hard to say.”
Book Merchant
“A thin man with a large bruise on his hand.”
Book Merchant
“At the very least, he wasn’t a merchant.”
Book Merchant
“No one who mumbles like that could survive in business.”
(A thin man… with a bruise on his hand…)
At the unexpected detail, I exchanged a glance with Matias.
Meanwhile, the book merchant called over a servant, had another glass brought,
and held it out toward me.
Emma
“Um… what is this…?”
Book Merchant
“I’ve given you all the information I have. That should be enough.”
Book Merchant
“Prince Matias, may I speak with the young lady you’re accompanying about business?”
I was lightly pressed at the back and guided toward a quieter corner.
I didn’t sense any ulterior motive, it was clear he genuinely wanted to speak as a fellow book merchant, but . . .
(We’re in the middle of an investigation. I can’t talk shop right now.)
Emma
“I’m honored, but perhaps another time, ah!”
Suddenly, my arm was yanked.
Carried by the momentum, I stumbled straight into Prince Matias’s chest.
Matias
“Thank you for your cooperation. Come, Emma.”
A hand settled on my shoulder, and I was gently but firmly pulled away from the book merchant.
The warmth of his hand against my bare skin felt unexpectedly strong.
Which option will you choose?
I’m sorry
Thank you for helping me
We got something useful, didn’t we?
Emma
“I’m sorry.”
Matias
“There’s no need to apologize. Thanks to you, we gained a valuable lead.”
Matias
“If anything, I’m the one who failed.”
Matias
“I didn’t expect myself to lose control of my personal feelings like that.”
Emma
“…What?”
Matias
“No, never mind. Let’s continue the investigation.”
Once we were far enough away, his hand left my shoulder.
(…Oh. I’m still holding the drink.)
As I stared at the clear liquid swaying in the glass, my heartbeat began to grow louder and louder.
I tried to calm myself, but the lingering warmth on my shoulder wouldn’t allow it.
(He was just busy and didn’t want to waste time. That has to be it.)
Trying to steady my nerves, I brought the glass to my lips and swallowed. The instant it passed my throat, heat flared sharply.
Emma
“Cough…!”
(What is this…!? It’s insanely strong… my throat feels like it’s burning…!)
Matias
“Emma?”
Prince Matias leaned closer, concern etched on his face, and that only made my heart race faster.
Emma
“I’m sorry… I just choked a little…”
I tried to brush it off, but my body began to feel unbearably hot. After walking a short distance, the world started spinning.
Matias
“Emma, are you all right? Stay with me.”
I could hear his voice, but I couldn’t tell where it was coming from.
Emma
“…”
Emma
“Prince… Matias…?”
In the blurred world before me, only his snow-shadow-colored eyes were clear.
In my haze, I nodded for some reason, though I had no idea what I was agreeing to.
Some Time Later~
Emma
“Mmm…”
(…Where am I? A room at the inn…?)
(Then why is Prince Matias here…?)
My thoughts were foggy; I couldn’t grasp the situation.
I barely understood that I was sitting on the edge of a bed, and that Prince Matias was standing in front of me.
Matias
“I’m sorry. I should have been more careful.”
Matias
“In Achroite, many people favor strong liquor to ward off the cold.”
Matias
“Normally, something that potent wouldn’t be served when foreign guests are present, but,”
Matias
“It was likely prepared specially to suit that book merchant’s taste.”
Matias
“For someone unaccustomed to it, drinking that much would naturally take its toll.”
Matias
“You should rest here for today. If you need anything, I’ll bring it.”
(Here… is this inside the castle?)
(No good… my head isn’t working properly…)
Emma
“…What will you do, Prince Matias?”
Matias
“I’ll examine what the book merchant told us earlier.”
Matias
“Thanks to the materials you organized, it should be easier to—”
Emma
“No.”
The word escaped me almost reflexively.
Emma
“You shouldn’t work this late. Please, go rest.”
Matias
“But,”
Emma
“No ‘but.’”
As if driven by something, I clenched the hem of his coat tightly.
(I must look like a child throwing a tantrum.)
(But I can’t stop myself.)
(Why do you push yourself this hard, all alone?)
(Why do you shoulder everything—even the pain?)
(Why won’t you take care of yourself at all?)
(I’m this worried about you… why won’t it reach you?)
Emma
“You work too hard, Prince Matias.”
Emma
“You carry everything by yourself, even all that responsibility…”
Emma
“Jin, Lars, the people of the castle, everyone is worried about you.”
Emma
“I am too. I’m so worried about you, it feels like I’ll fall apart…”
Emma
“Everyone cares about you. So you have to care about yourself, too.”
Emma
“Or else… I’ll cry.”
Matias
“That would… be a problem.”
Emma
“Then please don’t push yourself.”
Emma
“Don’t try to eradicate all evil from the world on your own.”
Emma
“Please rely on others more. Talk to us.”
Emma
“I’m your friend—and your partner…”
(…Huh. My eyelids feel… really heavy…)
I still had so much more I wanted to say, but my vision slowly faded . . .
POV Switch~
Emma fell asleep, resting her head lightly against Matias’s abdomen.
Matias
“……”
In the silent guest room, a confused sigh slipped from him.
After steadying his breath, Matias gently wrapped an arm around her, lifted her carefully, and laid her down on the bed.
Matias
“You may be right… I might have been pushing myself too hard.”
Matias brushed the hair that had fallen across Emma’s face aside with the back of his fingers, letting them linger against her cheek.
In his snow-shadow–colored eyes, a faint tenderness shimmered, something even he himself had yet to notice.
Matias
“But for someone like you to keep smiling… I cannot afford to stop walking.”
His fingertips left Emma’s cheek reluctantly.
Matias
“Good night, Emma.”
Matias
“Sweet dreams.”
***
(Where… am I?)
Under warm, gentle sunlight, rosebuds swayed softly in the breeze.
Ahead stood an oak table, and atop it lay a single book.
Paths stretched outward in every direction, yet each one led back to that table.
(…Am I dreaming?)
My body felt light, floating, as though my feet were no longer touching the ground.
Even so, I followed the path, drawing closer to the table.
The book resting there told my story.
Everything that had happened since I was chosen as Belle was written inside, but beyond that point, there was nothing.
Wondering if something new had been added, I reached out.
But . . .
Emma
“Huh… what…?”
Suddenly, a white haze spread through the air.
It thickened into frost, and in an instant swallowed everything.
Emma
“—!”
***
A chill pierced my heart as I jolted upright.
My hands clenched the blanket tightly, trembling, damp with sweat.
(A dream.)
I curled my fingers into fists, steadying my unsteady body as I forced myself to breathe.
(It feels like I was having an incredibly lonely… terrifying dream.)
(But I can’t remember what it was…)
My breathing gradually calmed, but in its place, a dull ache began to throb deep in my head.
(…Huh?)
Only then did I realize, this wasn’t my room at the inn.
(What did I do last night?)
(I went to the social party with Matias… we spoke with the book merchant…)
(And then—)
Emma
“No… way…”
The memories flooded back with painful clarity, and all the blood drained from my face.
(That’s right—I drank too much… and Matias carried me to a guest room in the castle…)
Just then, footsteps approached from the hallway.
They stopped right outside the door, followed by a knock.
Emma
“Y-yes!”
I answered in a voice far too loud, and Matias entered the room carrying a tray.
Matias
“Good morning, Emma. How are you feeling?”
Emma
“Ah, um, physically I feel fine, but,”
Matias
“?”
As if he didn’t remember anything from last night, Matias placed the tray on the side table.
Steam rose from a bowl of soup, alongside bread and coffee, it looked undeniably appetizing.
(No—this isn’t the time to be thinking that!)
Emma
“I’m truly sorry for the trouble I caused last night.”
Emma
“And I feel like I said something terribly rude as well…”
Matias
“I don’t recall anything of the sort.”
Emma
“That can’t be right! I told you to rest, and-”
Matias
“That was neither rude nor inappropriate. In fact, you were absolutely right.”
Matias poured water into a glass and handed it to me.
Matias
“Your head must hurt. You should rest until you’re feeling better.”
Matias
“If you have an appetite, please eat. An empty stomach will only make things worse.”
Emma
“Th-thank you…”
(Ugh… getting drunk and causing trouble is the worst. We have investigation work today, too…)
Matias
“About the investigation into the seditious books. . .”
(…!)
Matias
“I intend to take today off. If you have work as a book merchant, focus on that.”
His consideration only made my chest tighten painfully.
Emma
“I’m fine. Once I’m ready, I can continue investigating yesterday’s lead—”
Matias
“That’s not what I mean.”
Matias
“I reflected on what you told me last night… and decided to properly take a rest.”
Emma
“…What?”
Matias
“I’ve also been warned by my colleagues that working while exhausted only lowers efficiency.”
Matias
“Of course, I still have trials in the morning and afternoon, so I can’t take the entire day off,”
Matias
“But I plan to end work early this evening.”
Emma
“So… that’s how it is.”
The tightness in my chest eased, and I let out a small sigh of relief.
(He really is going to rest.)
(I said whatever came to mind last night while drunk…)
(but if it helped him even a little, then maybe it wasn’t all bad.)
(…Still, I should really be more careful with alcohol.)
Matias
“If you don’t have plans this evening, may I ask for some of your time?”
Emma
“Yes, that’s fine—um… is something the matter?”
Matias
“There’s somewhere I’ve wanted to go. I’d be glad if you came with me.”
(A place he’s wanted to visit, if he had time…)
(Being invited like this makes me really happy.)
Emma
“Of course. I’d be happy to join you.”
Matias
“Thank you. Then I’ll come to the inn to pick you up around evening. Until then, spend the time as you like.”
Later~
After returning to the inn once, I went to the warehouse district to retrieve the books I had stored.
(This should be enough.)
Clutching a bag filled with several books, I left Warehouse No. 45.
(Tonight might be difficult, but I want to show him the books from Rhodolite soon.)
(Especially if he’s going to start resting more.)
(If he’s going to have time to read peacefully, then we need to push the investigation forward.)
Filled with determination, I took another step—
Emma
“—!”
Suddenly, a figure appeared from the side, making my body jerk in surprise.
Emma
“J-Jin…!? Please don’t scare me like that!”
Jin
“I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Jin
“Well, I suppose it means you’re staying alert. Good job, Emma.”
Oddly enough, Jin looked far more wary of the surroundings than I did.
(Even last time, when we cornered that man… Jin happened to be in the warehouse district.)
(So maybe Jin is investigating something around here.)
(“Something”… more like… probably the Ember Remnants, right.)
Emma
“About what happened the other day… Prince Matias scolded me.”
Jin
“The other day?”
Emma
“When we cornered that man together.”
Emma
“It ended up being treated like I did everything alone, so he told me not to do anything dangerous, and…”
Jin
“Yeah… I did a real bad thing.”
Jin
“To you… and to Matias, too.”
Jin
“He probably went colder than you can even imagine.”
Jin smiled gently like he always did, and yet, in the depths of his eyes, I felt a distance.
(Like he’s trying to protect me… and Yves… by keeping himself out of it.)
Emma
“Jin.”
Jin
“Hm?”
Emma
“Will you tell me already… why you and Yves came to Achroite?”
Jin
“…”
Jin let out a quiet sigh.
Jin
“When you ask with a face that serious, I can’t exactly dodge it anymore.”
Jin
“Come on, let’s move somewhere else. Follow me.”
We slipped through a narrow passage and emerged into a small open square.
Only after confirming no one was around did he finally speak.
Jin
“You’ve heard of the Three-Nation Alliance, right?”
(I knew it.)
Emma
“…I had a feeling.”
Jin
“Sharp as ever.”
Emma
“Is Obsidian involved in the investigation into the Three-Nation Alliance…?”
Jin
“Well now—didn’t expect you to read that far.”
Jin
“You’ve gotten even sharper since you started working with Matias, haven’t you?”
(…Have I?)
Even if it was just flattery, it made me feel a little embarrassed—almost ticklish.
Jin
“Well, there are a lot of circumstances… but…”
Jin
“To put it simply, we were assigned work to probe the Alliance’s movements by making a deal with Obsidian.”
Jin
“It’s not something big enough to drag Benitoite or Jade into, but it’s not something we can ignore, either.”
Jin
“And if you want to investigate without stirring up trouble… moving Rhodolite was probably the most convenient option.”
(So that’s what it was.)
(In Achroite, “having ties to Obsidian” carries a weight all its own.)
(Jin and Yves kept quiet so it wouldn’t spill over onto me.)
(…But still.)
Flashback~
Yves
“Ever since we came to Achroite, Jin’s been a little strange.”
Yves
“Distant, I guess. Like—he keeps wanting to go out alone…”
End Flashback~
(Is it really just that?)
(Is there another reason Jin is investigating the “organization”…?)
Jin
“Point is—here in this country, we’re in a… let’s call it a slightly questionable position.”
Jin
“I’m not trying to interfere with your work. So you shouldn’t… get too involved with me—”
Emma
“…Jin.”
Emma
“Is it really only about the Three-Nation Alliance?”
Normal Story - A faint warmth swaying through the cold night—just the two of us.
Emma
“…Jin.”
Emma
“Is it really only about the Three-Nation Alliance?”
Jin
“…”
Jin
“You’ve gotten pretty suspicious. You’re starting to look just like someone I know.”
Jin gave a wry, troubled smile.
So he wouldn’t distract me with it, I fixed my gaze on his coppery eyes.
Emma
“Prince Matias told me.”
Emma
“…About the ‘organization.’”
Emma
“You’re investigating them too, right?”
Emma
“Is that part of your deal with Obsidian?”
(The Ember Remnants’ existence is classified.)
(If Obsidian knows, then it’s possible they’re involved with the seditious books…)
Jin
“…Sounds like Matias trusts you a whole lot.”
Jin
“Relax. The ‘organization’ is something I’m chasing on my own.”
Jin
“There was an incident in Achroite a long time ago that’s been stuck in my mind.”
(An incident the Ember Remnants were involved in…?)
(Prince Matias said they fled the country a few years ago… so this would be earlier than that?)
Jin
“I haven’t told Matias that I’m looking into them.”
Jin
“So yeah, makes my position twice as shady.”
Emma
“Why are you hiding it?”
(If Jin helped with the investigation, it would be such a relief…)
Jin
“The existence of the ‘organization’ is, depending how you look at it, this country’s stain.”
Jin
“Even if Matias wouldn’t mind… the king wouldn’t exactly smile on it.”
Jin
“…So. I’d appreciate it if you’d leave me out of it.”
Jin
“If you keep having these little ‘secret meetings’ with me, then when something happens… you’ll get suspected too.”
Emma
“When something happens…?”
(Is he prepared… even for being arrested…?)
Jin
“You stay by Matias’s side.”
Jin
“I’m counting on you.”
Leaving behind a gentle smile, Jin started walking toward the square.
Only the sound of his footsteps crunching through snow
echoed on and on through the quiet warehouse district.
***
After I returned to the inn, I spent a relaxed afternoon checking the condition of the books I’d brought back, and chatting with the elderly innkeeper and the women who worked there.
As the sun lowered and the sky began to stain itself purple, Prince Matias came to pick me up—
—and the place he took me was the square that led toward the warehouse district.
In the distance, orderly rows of warehouse lights glowed, softly illuminating the night.
Mobile café stalls lined the square, and the scent of coffee wrapped the cold air in something gentle.
(I’d been avoiding the warehouse district at night unless I had to come…)
(But the square at night feels so calm…)
Shop Owner
“Here you go. Two café mochas, and a berry pie.”
Matias
“Thank you.”
Prince Matias accepted the two cups and the pie wrapped in paper. We sat down side by side on a nearby bench, and he handed me a drink and the berry pie.
Matias
“This one’s yours.”
Emma
“Thank you.”
(…It smells so good.)
This café in the square seems to be one of Prince Matias’s favorites. He told me that he used to stop by whenever he went out, and that when he heard he had a day off, this place was the first thing that came to mind.
(…Huh?)
Emma
“Prince Matias, aren’t you having the berry pie?”
Matias
“This café mocha already puts me at today’s sugar limit.”
Matias
“You should have the pie. The berry pie here pairs very well with the café mocha.”
Matias
“They only use lingonberries, so the sweet-and-tart balance is just right.”
(Lingonberries… they’re a berry commonly eaten in Achroite, right?)
(A berry pie Prince Matias recommends is definitely going to be good.)
(But… eating it all by myself feels a little awkward.)
Matias
“Don’t worry about me.”
Matias
“Watching you enjoy sweets is enough to make me feel satisfied.”
(That means…)
Emma
“So I’m acting as your substitute, then?”
Matias
“To put it plainly, yes.”
Emma
“In that case, I’ll have to make sure I savor it properly.”
(He just likes watching someone eat—not me specifically, right?)
(Yes. Definitely. There’s no deeper meaning.)
As if to cover my thoughts, I took a sip of the café mocha.
The aroma of chocolate and a gentle bitterness filled my mouth.
Emma
“Mmm, this is delicious…!”
Matias
“I’m glad you like it.”
Matias
“Because of my family rules, I don’t usually drink coffee with milk or sugar, but…”
Matias
“Every so often, I find myself craving this taste.”
Matias
“Though drinking this café mocha means giving up all other sweets for the day.”
(Even this counts as a ‘sweet’… That really is strict.)
Emma
“This might be a silly question, but…”
Emma
“Do you ever feel that following your family rules is difficult?”
Matias
“Hm…”
Matias
“At this point, it’s simply part of my life. I don’t find it particularly difficult anymore.”
Matias
“But when I was young, the restrictions felt suffocating. There were times I wanted to run away.”
Emma
“How did you endure it?”
Matias
“By imagining things.”
Emma
“…Imagining?”
Matias
“When I was being punished and felt miserable, my mother taught me this.”
Matias
“In your imagination, you are free to do anything.”
Matias
“You can eat as many sweets as you want. You can play all day.”
Matias
“Even if your actions are restricted, your heart cannot be bound.”
Matias
“When things become unbearable, imagine a happy version of yourself, and live on that feeling.”
Matias
“That’s the secret to living positively.”
Emma
“That’s…”
I couldn’t help but feel it was a rather lonely story. Perhaps it was just me.
(Maybe Prince Matias’s mother was enduring something painful as well…)
(Something so difficult that she had to escape into imagination.)
Matias
“It’s the same even now. When I imagine peaceful days with my future bride, I can endure any hardship.”
Matias
“The ‘woman of destiny’ in my mind is always there to support me.”
Emma
“I see…”
I nodded as though I understood, but for some reason, my chest tightened painfully.
Wanting to ease that feeling, I gently took a bite of the berry pie.
(…!)
The burst of sweet-and-sour flavor spread through my mouth, and a soft breath escaped me.
Matias
“Does it suit your taste?”
Emma
“Yes…!”
It was so delicious that all my lingering unease vanished at once.
(I’ve had berry pie several times since coming to Achroite, but this one is overflowing with berries—)
(The balance of sweetness and tartness is incredible.)
(It’s really delicious…)
Sensing a gaze, I glanced to the side.
Matias
“……”
(……)
Prince Matias was watching me with slightly narrowed eyes, a gentle, almost fond smile on his face.
My heart skipped a beat.
(I got completely carried away… how embarrassing.)
(Still, it feels wrong that I’m the only one eating.)
(But if he’s already at his sugar limit…)
Emma
“Prince Matias, um…”
I turned the berry pie in its wrapper, angling the untouched portion upward.
Emma
“If you’d like, would you care to have a little? Um,”
(It’s not a ‘shared meal’ or a ‘gift’… I don’t know how to put it.)
(If Jin or Clavis were here, they’d come up with something clever.)
Emma
“Well… maybe just a little sharing…? No, that’s not quite it either…”
Matias
“Thank you. I’ll accept the sentiment.”
(…Right.)
Just as I was about to pull the pie back toward myself—
Matias
“…No. Wait.”
Matias
“If I were to refuse your offer… would that make you sad?”
Emma
“Huh?”
(More than sad, I’d probably feel inadequate…)
Emma
“Yes… probably…?”
Matias
“Then I can’t very well refuse.”
Just as I thought he lightly took my wrist, Prince Matias leaned in closer.
(—!)
The moment he took a bite of the berry pie, his snow-shadow–colored eyes met mine at an impossibly close distance.
Matias
“It’s written in the family code as well, ‘One must not wound a lady’s heart.’”
Matias
“I couldn’t possibly dismiss your offer so carelessly, Emma?”
(Oh no… not again…)
My heart slammed violently in my chest.
The pounding echoed in my ears, my breathing growing shallow.
It was the same sensation as before—the spell-like episode I’d had once while resting with Prince Matias.
(If I relax even a little, I feel like I might collapse right here.)
Matias
“You’re trembling. Are you all right? Your face is flushed.”
Emma
“I’m sorry… I think I’ve gotten a bit chilled.”
Emma
“If I drink something warm, I’ll calm down right away.”
With shaking hands, I raised the cup to my lips.
That dizzying sweetness—
I desperately told myself it was only the scent of chocolate.
***
In the throne hall, vast and solemn like a cathedral, there were no guards in sight.
Only the king sat upon the throne.
The quiet footsteps that echoed across the floor belonged to an elderly man—the headmaster of the Royal Academy.
Headmaster
“It has been some time, Your Majesty. It is rare for me to appear before you outside of a regular report.”
Erwin
“State your business.”
Headmaster
“Recently, your son visited the academy. It was regarding that book.”
Erwin
“I have entrusted Matias with the investigation of the seditious texts.”
Headmaster
“I am aware. However, are you certain this is wise?”
Headmaster
“At this rate, he will eventually realize it… the sin of the Asbrink family.”
Erwin
“……”
Without shifting his gaze even slightly, Erwin stared at the headmaster like an ice sculpture.
Erwin
“That is precisely why the seditious texts must not be permitted to exist.”
Erwin
“We will bring this matter to a swift conclusion, and Matias must not be informed.”
Headmaster
“Has the location of the contract been confirmed?”
Erwin
“Not yet.”
Erwin
“But now that the Ember Remnants have begun to move, they must have obtained some manner of information.”
Headmaster
“Her Majesty… Lady Matilda… she took that contract . . .”
Erwin
“Do not speak of the queen.”
Headmaster
“……My apologies.”
Erwin
“Continue tightening control within the academy.”
Erwin
“If there are students spreading the seditious texts as truth, report it immediately.”
Erwin
“They will be charged with sedition.”
Headmaster
“…Understood.”

The day after I shared dinner with Prince Matias . . .
I visited the office for our investigation work and found several people, Matias among them, locked in heated discussion around the conference table.
Man
“Even so, support for former criminals is necessary. Poverty breeds repeat offenses.”
Woman
“But how do you intend to secure the funding?”
Woman
“Even maintaining Ultima Thule already costs an enormous sum.”
Woman
“Shouldn’t we prioritize investment in education over supporting criminals?”
Matias
“I agree with that opinion.”
Matias
“Providing living support to former offenders does not guarantee rehabilitation.”
Matias
“There will be those who drain the nation’s resources only to return to crime.”
Man
“But at this rate, former offenders cannot survive.”
Matias
“That is the consequence of committing a crime. It is not something the nation must remedy.”
Matias
“If one does not commit a crime, one is not punished. The citizens of Achroite understand this.”
Matias
“For someone who once strayed to demand salvation is arrogance beyond-”
Suddenly, Prince Matias fell silent and turned his gaze toward me.
Matias
“…I apologize, Emma. Would you wait in my room?”
Matias
“As you can see, this discussion may take some time.”
Emma
“Of course. Please don’t worry about me.”
As though escaping the heavy, taut atmosphere, I left the office.
(I knew Prince Matias was someone who listened sincerely to all viewpoints, but…)
(When debates grow heated, they really do clash without restraint.)
Lost in thought, I made my way toward Prince Matias’s room, the same one I had visited before.
Along the way, several maids passed me, smiling warmly.
Maid 1
“Do you know the way?”
Emma
“Yes. You showed me before, so I’ll be fine.”
Maid 2
“We’ll bring you a drink shortly.”
Emma
“Thank you very much.”
I bowed and took a step forward—then stopped.
(I’m heading for Prince Matias’s room like it’s the most natural thing in the world, but…)
(Come to think of it, isn’t this actually my first time entering his room…?)
I have a question. If only one person can have any given curse (In IkeVil), as mentioned in Roger’s route, how do Nica and Ring have the same curse? Are they an exception? Is it because they’re twins? I just thought about this.
Hello, lovely! You are correct. We learn in Roger’s route that only one person can have a specific curse at a time. We also learn that, currently, curses cannot be eradicated— only transferred upon the death of the former bearer to the next fated person.
Therefore, we can assume that those who have had their curse since birth were born on the same day that their previous curse-bearer died. Regardless of when the curse manifests, the next-in-line was always fated for that particular curse.
This would account for the differences, for example, in people like William and Nica, who were unknowingly using their curses as infants, vs Jude and Roger who used their curses for the first time when they were older. The latter two had bearers who were still alive when they were born.
Heavy use of italics, ahoy!: So— if only one person can have a specific curse at a time, how do Nica and Ring have the same curse, at the same time, with both of them being alive, and with only one curse transfer…and yet they have two different powers?
You’re starting to see it for yourself, right? You’re not going to like where this is going:
SPOILERS, y’all:
You got your tissues ready? The 4-ply top shelf ones? Don’t be cheap, because you’re gonna need them!
Short answer:
It’s not possible.
Long answer:
In their Past Records stories, we learn that Nica and Ring were barely being kept alive while being subjected to harsh experiments.
Not only would Ring be dragged away for these experiments nine times out of ten, he would often come back barely conscious or actually unconscious. Regardless, he was in constant pain and losing hope fast.
Because Ring has a kind heart, there were many times where he would voluntarily go for experiments just to spare the other children. Whether he made himself a shield for others or not, it was Ring being subjected to all kinds of inhumane things more often than not.
Little Nica started to clock that, and also the fact that he was hardly ever picked. Not only that, lil’ Nica started to realize that even when he was picked, something would often happen to interrupt whatever was going to be done to him.
One day, when it’s Nica’s turn, one of the researchers explains their curse to Nica, since Ring passed out from what they did to him.
The reason that Ring keeps getting selected is all Nica’s “fault.”
You see, they are both cursed by a swan.
The difference is: Nica is cursed by the White Swan, and Ring is cursed by the Black Swan.
The White Swan curse makes Nica narcissistic, but it also favors him with good luck— at a cost. So long as Nica is around those he loves, he will sap their good fortune.
This explains Ring always being chosen for torture and Nica getting off either lightly or entirely.
Nica’s good luck can’t be transferred, and even though he cannot control it, his curse will bring bad luck to those he cares about.
So they have two different curses, which means they also have two different tragic fates.
Ring’s fate is for his love to turn into a lie, and to die in misery. Nica’s fate is to die being the only one who is happy.
When I learned that, it made me sad to notice this:
Is he fated to be killed by Ellis? 😭
After making their escape, Nica finally tells Ring about their curse— only he lies.
Remember: their curses were explained to only Nica, while Ring was rendered unconscious from being tortured. Little Ring has no reason not to trust Nica, while little Nica believes that he is protecting Ring from the truth.
In order to keep himself and Ring safe and alive, and to prepare for their escape, wee Nica learns how to game others fast. A fake smile, a certain expression, the right words— Nica figures out how to paint a protective veneer over his true thoughts in an effort to survive.
Even if he has to lie to the last family member he has left, Nica does what he’s learned to do in the research facility and puts on a “happy” front, saying whatever he needs to keep his brother safe and alive. Ring is the person he wants to protect the most (even though Nica wants to break down and cry because he’s so overwhelmed, dealing with this all on his own).
When offered a chance to leave the research facility, Nica refuses because it means leaving Ring behind. His power is considered useful, while Ring’s is considered beyond worthless.
Nica suffers internally because, according to the researchers, no one “needs” Ring. Nica can’t give up, though, saying that he needs his brother.
Determined to keep Ring safe and by his side, Nica tells him that they both have the Black Swan curse, even though it’s not true.
Nica swears to himself that he will protect his little brother no matter what. Even if it’s from a curse that neither of them can escape. He’s unable to give up on Ring, even though he knows that staying by his little brother’s side is going to create problems for him.
Just from Nica existing in Ring’s vicinity, Ring will have his luck siphoned, simply because he’s loved by his big brother. This is the dynamic of the Black and White Swans.

I pretty much have no idea what I’m doing. I don’t trust me, and you shouldn’t either. There is no guarantees that this is in any way accurate.

The quiet room was filled only with the gentle crackle of burning logs.
I sat on the sofa beside the fireplace, my hands resting neatly on my knees, unable to move.
(In the end, I ended up being invited into Prince Matias’s room, and even had a drink prepared for me.)
According to the maid, Prince Matias would arrive shortly.
She had told me to “please make yourself comfortable until then,” but . . .
(…I’m so nervous…)
I hesitated even to reach for the drink. Time passed, and I couldn’t calm myself.
(Just like his office… everything is so meticulously arranged.)
Against one wall stood a shelf lined with coffee beans, alongside a small bookcase.
The jars of beans and brewing tools were carefully arranged, making it clear just how deeply Prince Matias loved coffee.
The books, too, were neatly aligned by height and cover color.
(…Hm?)
As my eyes traced the spines, one particular title drew my attention.
(That’s… a book from Rhodolite. And not just that—)
Flashback~
Rio
“Oh? You’re bringing this one too?”
Rio
“Didn’t you say it was a tragic romance? You said your chest hurt after reading it.”
Emma
“That’s true, but the snow imagery is so beautiful. I really wanted people in Achroite to read it.”
End Flashback~
(I brought the same book with me this time.)
(…What an incredible coincidence.)
Just as I stepped closer to the shelf, curious, there was a knock at the door.
Emma
“Y–yes.”
I hurriedly straightened my posture as Prince Matias entered.
Matias
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
Emma
“Oh, not at all…”
(…)
Last night’s events suddenly resurfaced in my mind, warmth rising from deep in my chest. Being alone with him in this room only made me more aware of it.
(Calm down, Emma… think of something to say—)
What will you say?
What a lovely candle.
That’s an impressive coffee shelf.
What a beautiful view.
Emma
“That’s an impressive coffee shelf.”
Emma
“There are so many different kinds of beans—just looking at them is fun.”
Matias
“I’m aware I’ve gone a bit overboard, but I can’t seem to stop.”
Matias
“Blending different beans to find the perfect flavor is a small hobby of mine.”
Matias
“If I have the time, I’d like to study flavors that suit your taste.”
Matias
“When that happens, you’ll have to help me with the tasting.”
Emma
“Yes, of course.”
(…This is bad. My heart’s racing even more now.)
Emma
“Um… I took a quick look at your bookshelf, and I noticed you have books from Rhodolite.”
Matias
“This one?”
I’d asked just to settle myself, but . . .
Matias
“……”
Prince Matias stared at the book, his expression clouding slightly.
(What’s wrong…?)
He removed a single book from the shelf and sat down on the sofa.
Matias
“This was my mother’s book.”
Matias
“Most of her belongings were disposed of, but this one I barely managed to keep.”
Matias
“You could say it’s my only memento of her.”
(Disposed of…? Why?)
(Is that a custom in Achroite? Or was there another reason…?)
Matias
“However, this book is damaged.”
He opened it toward the back and showed me. One page had clearly been torn out.
Matias
“For some reason, only this page is missing.”
Matias
“It was the part that described a woman who sealed away an unforgivable love in her heart…”
Matias
“I don’t know whether it was torn intentionally or lost to some accident.”
Matias
“All I know is that the missing page has never been found.”
The tear was clean, nothing like a violent rip.
It didn’t feel like something discarded in anger. Rather, it felt… taken.
(As Prince Matias said, this part really does make your chest ache.)
(The woman swallows her tears and chooses to seal away her love.)
(That choice leads to tragedy—but there was no other way to protect that love…)
Just recalling it brought back the pain I’d felt when I first read it.
(The story still works without the page, but… I really wish he could read it.)
Emma
“This is a complete coincidence, but… I brought this book with me this time.”
Matias
“……! Truly?”
Emma
“Yes. It’s stored in the warehouse, so I’ll bring it to you another day.”
Emma
“You should be able to confirm what was written on the missing page.”
Matias
“That would be a great help.”
Matias
“To think you brought the same book… truly, a meeting of fate.”
(Fate…)
Seeing Prince Matias look so pleased, warmth spread through my chest.
At the same time, I felt faintly embarrassed by how strongly I reacted to the word fate.
The following day—
As I headed toward the office as usual, I saw Prince Matias speaking with someone in the corridor.
I slowed my steps so as not to interrupt, but he noticed me and beckoned me over.
Matias
“Emma, perfect timing. Let me introduce you.”
As I approached, two men wearing heavy coats turned toward me.
(S–such an overwhelming presence…)
One was a large, middle-aged man whose sharp gaze made me instinctively straighten my back.
Standing slightly behind him was a middle-aged man with a gentler demeanor.
Matias
“This is Warden Gunnar, the chief authority of Ultima Thule.”
(Ultima Thule…)
The cries of defendants I’d heard during trials flickered through my mind.
Emma
“Pleased to meet you, Lord Gunnar. My name is Emma.”
Gunnar
“I’ve heard of you from Prince Matias. I look forward to working with you.”
Frem
“My name is Frem. I serve under the warden as a guard at Ultima Thule. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Emma
“The pleasure is mine. I look forward to working with you.”
In contrast to the warden, Frem carried a gentle air about him, and that softness eased my tension just a little.
Emma
“What brings the two of you to the castle today?”
Gunnar
“A regular report.”
Emma
“A regular report?”
Matias
“Those responsible for the kingdom’s key facilities are required to come to the castle at regular intervals to report.”
Matias
“Ultima Thule is some distance away, but they make this journey often.”
Emma
“I see.”
(I assumed something serious must have happened.)
(And yet…)
Emma
“Ah…?”
Gunnar
“The royal family of Achroite, the House of Asbrink, bears a heavy responsibility.”
Gunnar
“Do you truly understand that burden, and still possess the resolve to remain at Prince Matias’s side?”
Emma
“…As I stated earlier, I am merely a partner in the investigation of the seditious books.”
Emma
“I believe I am mindful of my position.”
Gunnar
“Are you?”
(…)
It felt as though he were peering into a place deep within me, one I hadn’t even confronted myself, and my breath caught.
Gunnar
“Half-hearted assistance can, at times, become a burden.”
Gunnar
“You would do well to reflect once more on your position and conduct.”
Gunnar
“You can sell books in Rhodolite.”
Gunnar
“Do not involve yourself further in Achroite’s problems. Return to your homeland.”
With that, the warden gave Prince Matias a brief bow and turned on his heel.
Frem looked back and forth between me, Prince Matias, and the warden, his face pale with surprise.
Frem
“Warden, how could you say such a thing?”
Frem
“Ms. Emma, please don’t take this to heart. We hope you’ll continue supporting Prince Matias-”
Gunnar
“Frem. Mind your tongue.”
The quiet pressure in his voice silenced Frem at once.
After bowing politely to us, Frem followed after the warden.
An awkward atmosphere lingered as Prince Matias and I resumed our investigation work as usual.
Behind the scratch of my pen on paper, the warden’s words echoed over and over in my mind.
(Half-hearted assistance becomes a burden…)
(Perhaps he’s right.)
(Am I truly helping Prince Matias?)
(Or am I only getting in the way—like that night at the party, when I drank too much…)
Matias
“Emma.”
Emma
“!”
I looked up just as Prince Matias took a seat across from me at the conference table.
Matias
“About what the warden said earlier…”
Matias
“If you’re considering stepping away from the investigation, you don’t need to hesitate to tell me.”
(Ah…)
A sharp pain pierced my chest, like a thin needle, and my voice caught.
Matias
“There’s no doubt that you’ve been helping me.”
Matias
“Still, it troubles me that I’ve involved someone from another country in Achroite’s affairs.”
Matias
“The matter of the Ember Remnants is something I should be dealing with myself. It’s not a burden you ought to bear.”
I knew he wasn’t pushing me away, but a cold sensation spread through my chest all the same.
At the same time, a whisper crossed my mind: Maybe this is where I should step back.
(Even so…)
Emma
“May I help you a little longer, Prince Matias?”
Emma
“I was the one who asked to be involved in the first place.”
Emma
“And the more I learn, the more I can’t forgive the existence of those seditious books…”
Emma
“Since I’ve come this far, I want to at least see the mastermind brought to justice.”
When I finished, Prince Matias’s expression softened with visible relief.
Matias
“…I see. Thank you.”
His words, and his smile, should have made me happy. Yet the cold sensation that had settled in my chest refused to fade.
Matias
“…The warden didn’t say those things out of malice.”
Matias
“If anything, his words were directed at me.”
Emma
“At you, Prince Matias?”
Matias
“Yes. The warden is my mother’s brother, my uncle.”
(Warden Gunnar is Prince Matias’s uncle…!?)
Matias
“My uncle was strongly opposed to my mother joining the royal family.”
Matias
“Officially, he claimed it was concern over ‘a woman from a prison-warden lineage entering the royal house,’ but…”
Matias
“I believe he was truly worried about the burden she would have to bear as queen.”
Emma
“Your mother came from a family of prison wardens?”
Matias
“Yes.”
(A family that has managed Ultima Thule for generations, perhaps…)
Matias
“To someone from Rhodolite, this may sound strange, but…”
Matias
“The royal family of Achroite, the House of Asbrink, has always been free to choose their spouse.”
Matias
“Status is irrelevant. As long as the woman is deemed worthy of the House of Asbrink, that is enough.”
Matias
“However, no matter whom one chooses, all responsibility for that choice must be borne personally.”
(So it really is like that…)
(Prince Matias’s mother wasn’t a noble, but a commoner who married into the royal family…)
Emma
“His Majesty must have loved the Queen very deeply.”
(No matter the rules, a common-born woman becoming queen would face countless obstacles.)
(And coming from a prison-warden lineage only makes that heavier.)
(To accept her as queen despite all that must have required tremendous resolve.)
Matias
“Yes… I suppose so.”
Matias
“I have never seen my father, no, His Majesty, smile even once since I was born.”
Matias
“Even so, I believe the two of them truly loved one another.”
Matias
“But at some point, they seemed to fall into conflict.”
Matias
“And not long after that… my mother passed away.”
(A falling-out…?)
The thought caught slightly at my mind, but I didn’t have the courage to press further.
Matias
“Because of that, my uncle likely harbors resentment toward the House of Asbrink.”
Matias
“I can understand how he feels.”
Matias
“His Majesty failed to fulfill the responsibility of protecting his queen with his own life.”
Matias
“And so did I.”
With eyes the color of snow-shadow, tinged with loneliness, Prince Matias gazed into the distance.
Matias
“…Freedom always comes with responsibility.”
Matias
“To choose a queen with the resolve to love her and protect her for one’s entire life—that is the law of the House of Asbrink.”
Matias
“At the very least, that is how I have sworn to live.”
(Choosing one’s queen is the “one freedom they are allowed”)
(To Prince Matias, a queen is someone worth devoting his entire life to.)
(The peaceful life he imagines with that future woman is what sustains him now.)
(For the sake of her smile, Prince Matias has kept pushing himself forward.)
The cold sensation that had lodged itself in my chest slowly spread through my entire body.
(…Maybe I misunderstood something.)
(I am, at most, a partner in the investigation.)
(Not “the future queen.”)
Emma
“…The woman who becomes your queen will surely be very happy, Prince Matias.”
At those words, his gaze gently turned toward me.
Emma
“But if you keep working the way you do now, you’ll only make your future queen worry.”
Emma
“Please take this opportunity to learn how to rely on others, too.”
Matias
“Emma…”
I forced a smile.
The feelings I had pushed down still radiated a faint warmth deep within my chest.
After a long day consumed by the investigation, Prince Matias escorted Emma back to her inn, then headed alone toward the castle.
Soft snow drifted down through the frozen night.
Matias
“…It’s cold tonight.”
The words dissolved into the silence, then, behind him, the crunch of footsteps on snow rang out.
Jin
“Working this late, huh? You’ve got my respect.”
Matias
“Jin.”
Jin raised a hand casually, but his expression was unusually stern.
Jin
“…You got a minute?”
Jin
“There’s something I want to talk to you about.”

True love—
to me, it is the only freedom I can hold in these hands.
It was around the time I had graduated from boarding school and had just begun taking my first steps as a legal professional—
I happened to notice a suspicious young man standing in front of a bookstore I was passing by.
(He’s going to do it…)
Sure enough, as I watched from outside, the young man slipped a book into his clothes the moment the shopkeeper looked away.
I blocked his path as he tried to leave as if nothing had happened.
Young Man
“W-what the hell… who are you…?”
Matias
“Did you pay for that?”
At those words, the young man seemed to understand everything.
A hastily swung fist slammed into my arm.
(…Damn it. I let my guard down.)
In the brief opening that followed, the young man tried to run.
But I quickly grabbed him by the collar and threw him to the ground.
When I pinned him down, he struggled desperately, fighting back.
Matias
“Stay still. Unless you want this changed from attempted theft to robbery.”
Young Man
“Damn it…! P-please, just this once—let me go!”
Young Man
“I’m just trying to survive… My old man got sick, and we lost any decent income!”
Young Man
“I can’t even afford food anymore… and my dad needs to eat…”
Young Man
“At this rate, we’re really going to die!”
(…I see. He’s not truly a bad person.)
Hearing the commotion, people began to gather around us.
At a glance, it was clear the young man had committed a crime, and those who were usually friendly, calm, or kind, now everyone’s eyes turned as cold as frozen ice.
This is the kind of country Achroite is, harsh toward criminals, utterly unforgiving.
Before long, soldiers arrived and took the young man into custody.
After this, he would likely be sentenced to actual imprisonment at trial and sent to Ultima Thule.
Anyone who has once been imprisoned is treated with contempt within Achroite.
They can no longer obtain proper employment and are forced into conditions even harsher than before.
(…Did he truly commit a crime worthy of ruining his entire life?)
(Do those who turn to crime out of poverty truly have no chance at redemption?)
Jin
“In Rhodolite, if there’s room for leniency, reduced sentences for criminals aren’t that uncommon.”
—Those were the kinds of things my friends from school once told me after our law classes.
***
Jin
“There are a lot of people who commit crimes because they have no choice.”
Jin
“No matter how good a person is, if they fall into poverty or face a life-or-death situation, they’re forced to become a criminal, right?”
Clavis
“Stealing because you’re poor—that’s a story you hear all the time.”
Clavis
“Don’t you think it’s a bit heartless to punish people like that without leaving any room for discussion?”
Matias
“But in Achroite, that’s common sense. No matter the circumstances, a criminal is a criminal…”
Matias
“…and one who deserves to be punished.”
Matias
“……”
Jin
“You’ve got something on your mind too, don’t you?”
Clavis
“It’s just the three of us here. If you’ve got complaints, I’ll listen.”
Matias
“……You won’t tell anyone?”
Jin
“Of course not.”
Clavis
“We’re friends, right?”
Matias
“……Yes.”
Matias
“Obeying the law is important. It must not be broken.”
Matias
“But I believe even criminals should have rights.”
Matias
“Regardless of a suspect’s or defendant’s crimes, there are basic rights that should be enjoyed simply by virtue of being human…”
Matias
“The right to live, perhaps. To strip even that away because of a single mistake…”
Matias
“It’s bothered me ever since I was a child.”
Jin
“You’re a rare type of man in Achroite.”
Matias
“……If my father heard this, he’d probably scold me for being soft.”
Jin
“But that’s the justice you believe in, isn’t it?”
Matias
“That may be so.”
Matias
“After graduation, I intend to work in the legal field and aim to become a judge.”
Matias
“However, I don’t want that role to be about punishing people, I want it to be something that makes people smile more.”
Clavis / Jin
“You…”
“You really are…”
Clavis
“Hah… for a moment, even a handsome man like me had to taste defeat and wonder if you might be cooler…”
Matias
“What is that supposed to mean?”
Jin
“Well, I reckon most of my younger brothers would respect the way you live.”
Jin
“From Achroite’s point of view, Rhodolite probably seems like a soft country. But you know—this is what I think.”
Jin
“That criminals are born somewhere every single day…”
Jin
“…is also the responsibility of those of us who run a nation where people can’t survive without turning to crime.”
Matias
“……”
Jin
“You and we are royalty. We carry our nations on our backs, don’t we?”
Jin
“Let’s both do our best.”

Erwin
“Witness, please step before the stand.”
Several days later, the trial of the young man arrested for attempted theft was held.
Because it was not a major case, few people sat in the gallery.
Still, for him, this trial marked a turning point in his life. It was anything but light.
Erwin
“Do you swear to speak the truth according to your conscience, to conceal nothing, and to speak no falsehoods?”
Matias
“I swear.”
My father, who was still a presiding judge at the time, looked down at me with frozen eyes.
“Do not bring emotion into the courtroom” This, too, is one of the Asbrink family precepts.
Someday, I must become like that myself.
The inexplicable unease rooted beneath that resolve may simply be proof of my immaturity.
Or perhaps—
Erwin
“You may now give your testimony.”
Matias
“A few days ago, I witnessed him attempting to commit theft and stopped him at the storefront.”
Matias
“When questioned, he immediately admitted to the crime, so I handed him over to the soldiers without incident.”
Matias
“That is all.”
Erwin
“…Is that truly all?”
Matias
“I swear it is.”
Unconsciously, I grasp my arm.
The spot throbs faintly, the bruise left from when I was struck the other day still remains. Even so, I have no intention of mentioning the assault.
Between attempted theft and robbery, the difference in punishment is as vast as heaven and earth.
(I still… cannot believe this young man committed a crime deserving such severity.)
That may be a form of softness.
Perhaps it even violates the family precept: “Do not bring emotion into the courtroom.”
(Did Jin and Clavis understand the way I felt?)
The presiding judge looked as though he wanted to say something, but in the end, he said nothing.
Surely my father, who has spent his life discerning truth and falsehood in the words of those who stand at the witness stand, can see the truth I concealed.
(But this is the justice I believe in.)
Even after my duty as a witness ended, the trial proceeded solemnly. And then—
Erwin
“I will now deliver the verdict.”
Erwin
“The defendant is hereby found guilty and sentenced to three years of imprisonment in Ultima Thule.”
(…Three years, even for an attempt.)
(Is three years… truly appropriate?)
Young Man
“Wait! I can’t leave my father alone for three years!”
Young Man
“If he doesn’t get food right away, he’ll really die! Please—help me… help me!”
(…..)
(……..)
My tightly clenched fist aches.
Under the law, all people are equal no matter what circumstances they may face.
Sometime after that trial, my father sent me into the army. It was likely an unspoken command to abandon my soft views toward criminals.
At the time, the Emperor of Obsidian himself frequently led assaults, and I experienced brutal battlefields. There was no room to consider whether the enemy might deserve sympathy.
Even so, though the core of my sense of justice wavered at times, it never changed. I never once believed my silence during that young man’s trial to have been a mistake.
Matias
“…Wha—”
Matias
“What—”
Matias
“—Mother!”
—Not until that day.
Time passed, and I adjust my clothes before the mirror.
(Today, there are two trials for theft, and one for violating the Prohibited Goods Control Act.)
Jin
“That criminals are born somewhere every single day…”
Jin
“…is also the responsibility of those of us who govern a nation where people can’t survive without turning to crime.”
(He’s right.)
(That is why I will impose absolute law upon this country.)
(There is no room for leniency toward those who break the law.)
(Criminals are criminals. The moment they commit a crime, they forfeit any right to live as human beings.)
(It is that frozen, ironclad law that protects Achroite’s public order today.)
(To build lasting peace, I will offer up freedom and become a guardian of the law.)
(So that tragedies born of my own softness never occur again.)
I carry the justice I have arrived at within my heart, once more.
The frozen eyes reflected in the mirror were the same as the ones I had seen in court long ago, like a beast devoid of emotion.

(Huh…? Ring’s not here.)
I woke up late at night because my throat felt dry, and I noticed Ring — who should’ve been asleep next to me — was missing.
Just as I slipped out of bed to look for him, the sound of faint, shaky breaths and running water could be heard from the bathroom.
(Ring? What’s he doing at this hour…?)
I peeked inside past the slightly ajar door, careful not to make a sound, and then—
Ring: … ggh, mmf… haa… ugh…
(Eh…!?)
Ring was standing there, the front of his bottoms open, one hand wrapped around his… thing.
His brows were tightly furrowed, breathing ragged as he pumped his hand around it… tending to his swollen need.
Ring: nngh, haa… nn…
I knew what I was seeing wasn't meant for my eyes, and yet… I couldn’t peel my eyes off the look of frustration on his face.
(Does it feel good… when he touches himself like that…?)
Each movement of his fingers drew out another heated breath, and I found myself staring at the scene.
(... Nope! Ring wouldn’t want to be seen like this.)
(I should turn around and pretend I never saw anything…)
I tried to slip away quietly, but just then—
Ring: … K-Kate… Kate…
Hearing my name coming from his mouth in that strained, raspy voice made me stop in my tracks.
(He’s thinking of me while doing that…?)
(But if he wanted it, he could've just woken me up…)
Seemingly nearing his limit, Ring’s hand movements grew quicker, hips bucking slightly.
Ring: Nn… haa… Kate… it feels so good…
Standing there speechless was my biggest mistake.
Ring: Haa… nngh… I’m… I’m gonna—
At that exact moment, the floor beneath my feet creaked.
Ring: …!?
Ring opened his eyes… and through the narrow gap in the doorway, our eyes met.
Ring: UWAHHH!?
Kate: KYAAA!?
Ring: You saw me… doing something so embarrassing… I want to disappear…
Ring dashed out of the bathroom and curled up in a corner of the room with his shoulders slumped.
Kate: I’m sorry for peeping, Ring… I shouldn't have done that.
Ring: No, it's not your fault. It’s mine for not being able to control myself when I’m aroused.
Ring: I… I was really looking forward to making love to you tonight.
Ring: But the room’s too bright, and it didn't feel like the right setting anymore…
Right — due to some technical issues at the hotel we were staying at, the lights couldn't be switched off and we’d been stuck with our room being brightly lit all night.
(Whenever we were about to do it, I’d ask him to turn off the lights, so he must be concerned about that…)
Ring: But you were sleeping so peacefully next to me, and smelled so good, I was slowly losing my mind…
Ring: I didn't want to force myself on you, so I went to the bathroom to deal with the urges.
Ring: … Sorry you had to see me being weird.
Kate: I understand you were holding yourself back out of consideration for me, so please don’t be sorry.
More than anything, knowing that he craved me even when he was alone made my heart swell with affection.
(... Maybe tonight, it’s my turn to be bold.)
Kate: Um… you had to stop halfway through just now, didn't you?
Ring: …! Y-Yeah… b-but don’t worry about that.
Kate: Even though it's bright… it’s fine for tonight.
Ring: Wha…
Kate: I want you, Ring.
In the brightly lit room, I slowly stripped off all my clothes, laying myself bare beneath the light.
Kate: … I-I’ll get embarrassed if you keep staring that hard.
Sitting on the bed, Ring’s feverish gaze alone made me want to cover myself up already.
Ring: Sorry… you’re just too beautiful… I can’t help it.
His gaze trailed over me from head to toe, then up again and lingered on my chest — before he got flustered and averted his eyes.
Kate: Looks like what Nica said is true.
Ring: Nica? What did he even…
I climbed onto the bed, leaned in close, and whispered the answer into his ear.
Ring: “Ring is always staring at the robin’s chest”? Nica— that bastard! T-That’s obviously not true…!
Kate: Is it? I feel you do play with my breasts a lot…
Ring: …! I mean— yeah… I like them. But your breasts aren't the only part of you I like. I also like your legs… your hands… even the tips of your fingers…
Ring: … I love every single inch of your body.
Ring grabbed my shoulders and gently pushed me down onto the bed.
Ring: And I'll prove it to you.
— From that moment on, Ring was truly very tender with me.
He planted kisses along my neck, licking my collarbone, then cupped my breasts with both hands, kneading gently…
There were brief moments when his touch got a little clumsy, but even then, I could feel his sincere desire to cherish every inch of my body.
Ring: Every part of you I touch… is so soft…
Ring: Just touching you like this… it’s getting me aroused again.
Kate: Nngh, haa… aahh…
As he fondled my sensitised peaks with the tip of his tongue, his hand slid along my inner thigh, making my hips reflexively move to grind against him.
Ring: You’re getting turned on too, huh. … You’re so wet already.
Ring’s fingertips brushed against my soaked entrance.
He hadn’t started actually touching me yet, but his fingers were already slick with my nectar.
Ring: I think you’re already so beautiful like this, just the way you are…
Ring: But seeing how your body reacts to my touch… it makes you even cuter.
Smiling as he spoke, Ring rubbed his fingers against my sensitive nub before slowly pushing them in.
He withdrew them slightly while watching my reactions, then sank them in deeper… repeating the motion until my body melted away under his touch.
But after a while… his fingers were no longer enough for me.
(I want to see that look on his face again, the one he had in the bathroom when he was feeling good…)
Kate: Ring… t-together…
Ring: … Yeah, I’m at my limit too.
I felt something hot brush against my entrance, then it slowly entered me.
Perhaps not paying attention to our environment, Ring lifted my hips as he thrust into me…
In the bright room, I could clearly see his cock filling me to the brim, the visibility making me feel all the more shameful.
Kate: Nngh… ah… aah…!
Overwhelmed by the mix of shame and pleasure, it didn't take long for me to reach my climax, my nails digging into Ring’s back.
Kate: … I-I’m sorry, Ring… it feels so good, I— my nails— aah…!
Ring: … Don’t… worry about it… I want you to do it more, leave as many marks on my back as you want…
Ring: As long as it's from you… I’ll love it… anything at all…
Ring: More importantly… are you okay…? Am I hurting you?
In the bright room, I could see clearly the tenderness in Ring’s eyes as he expressed his concern for me.
Kate: … I’m okay. … I love you, Ring.
I thought being seen like this would make me too embarrassed for anything, but… maybe embracing each other under the light isn’t so bad after all.
What the light exposed wasn't only the way our bodies were in a lewd entanglement… but also the depth of his feelings for me.

Teeth sank into the delicate skin of my neck.
Kate: Nngh…
My face twisted in pain, my walls reflexively clenching around the heat buried deep inside me.
Nica: Hah, you’re so tight.
While I endured the pain sitting atop his lap, Nica’s brows furrowed for a split second before the corner of his lips lifted into a grin.
Nica: Does it feel that good?
Nica: If you're going to squeeze every time I bite, maybe I should do it a lot more.
Kate: D-Don’t…
He started moving again, pounding rhythmically into me and filling me up with his dick.
Pleasure shot through my body like a lightning bolt, and my vision flickered.
The moment a bead of Nica’s sweat trickled down to his chest — that was when I reached my limit.
Kate: AAH!
Nica: … You really are a naughty girl, Kate.
(How did things turn out like this?)
Through my tear-blurred vision, my mind drifted back to what happened not long ago.
…
It was morning after we spent a sweet, lustful night together.
I woke up in his arms, wrapped in pristine white sheets.
(Fufu… he’s still asleep.)
His innocent sleeping face came into view, it was so endearing that a smile unknowingly formed on my face.
(I love mornings like this… getting to see Nica’s sleeping face…)
I watched him for a while, enjoying that quiet moment of bliss… until it hit me that I was completely naked.
Kate: Nn…
The sheets brushed the spot between my legs, causing a shameful sound to escape my lips.
(The feeling is still there.)
My clit was still swollen, heat lingered between my legs, and my insides felt like his dick was still in there.
The bite marks left on my chest had a slight burning sensation, and the air grazing my skin ever so slightly made me flinch.
(It’s always like this after we go at it.)
Doing it with Nica always gave me immense pleasure I’ve never felt before, and he never stopped until he fucked all sense out of me.
And because of that, the pleasure never faded away immediately after we were done.
(What do I do… it's happening again…)
As my body ached from the aftermath of being utterly ruined by him, my core slowly became wet again, and I turned my gaze toward Nica.
(This is all your fault.)
I traced my finger along his cheek, but he showed no sign of waking.
I tried his ear, his collarbone… still nothing.
(This is kind of fun.)
My fingers traced along the outlines of his muscles, slowly moving lower and lower until my fingertips brushed against the fabric of his underwear…
— My breath caught in my throat at the feeling of his dick underneath it.
Kate: Eh…
The instant I realized he’d gotten hard enough for it to be obvious through the fabric, I wanted to pull my hand away — but it was too late.
He seized my wrists and pressed my hands firmly onto his erection.
Nica: Getting horny first thing in the morning… was last night so unsatisfactory for you?
Now wide awake, Nica looked at me with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
I quickly tried to roll away, but an arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me back against his body, holding me from behind as we laid on our sides.
Kate: Ah—
The hand caressing my lower abdomen slid between my legs.
After checking how wet I was, he chuckled and slid his fingers inside without hesitation.
Nica: Did you get this wet from remembering what we did last night?
His fingers moving inside me reignited the heat from last night.
Kate: Ahh…
He pinched my swollen clit, and the instant pleasure shot through me, my body gave out far too quickly.
A wet squelch followed as he pulled out.
Getting up into a seated position, he pulled away the sheets covering my body.
Kate: N-No…
My wanton body was fully exposed in the light.
I reached for the sheets in embarrassment, but Nica only laughed and tossed it onto the floor.
Nica: Nope, let me see everything.
Kate: But it’s embarrassing… like…
My face after hitting my climax, my wetness, my flushed body — baring everything to him like this was a first for me.
Ashamed of myself, I tried to hide my face, but Nica picked me up and placed me on his lap with a soft smile.
Nica: It’s okay, you’re beautiful.
Kate: Wha— AHH!?
He impaled me on his dick without warning, making my vision turn white for a second.
Nica began thrusting into me while sinking his teeth into my neck—
And just like that, we were back to square one.
(It hurts, but it feels so good… I’m losing my mind.)
With the mix of pain in my neck and pleasure from his dick pounding deep inside me, tears spilled from my eyes.
Seeing that, Nica pulled me in for a tight hug.
Nica: … Does it hurt?
Kate: Y-You’re biting me too hard, you know that…!?
Nica: Yeah, I know. I’m doing it on purpose.
He licked the tears trailing down my cheeks, then looked up at me with a cruel smile.
Nica: But pain can feel good too, right?
Kate: Ggh!
Like he’d hit the bullseye, my walls tightened around his dick again.
Nica: See? I was right. You're really so easy to read.
Gripping my hips, he thrust into me again and again, his dick growing even harder and hotter.
Kate: Y-You’re— awful…!
All I could do while atop his lap was cry out in a mix of pain and pleasure, clinging to him as he laughed and looked down at his dick buried inside my cunt.
Nica licked the other side of my neck — the part he hadn't bitten yet — then looked at me with eyes burning with lust, his lips curling into a smile.
Nica: — That’s what makes you the perfect plaything.
He bit into my skin again, pain coursing through my entire body.
I clenched around him once more, and felt something hot burst out inside me.
He lifted my hips and pulled himself out, smirking at the sight of his cum spilling out of my sore cunt.
Nica: I don’t hurt just anyone, you know? It’s important who your pain is coming from, isn't it?
Obscene, wet sounds echoed through the room as a mixture of our love juices dripped onto the pristine white sheets.

Love or romance — before me, they’re nothing but dust.
Nica: ~♪
I hum softly to myself as I walk down the corridor.
The palace at night is quiet, with only the moonlight spilling through the windows to light the way ahead.
(Night really is the best.)
I’ve hated bright light ever since I was a kid.
That never changed as I grew older. I still shy away from mornings drenched in sunlight, waking up in the afternoon as if I’m running from the sun.
I usually only start moving once the sun has set.
Most of my work as a strategist begins with gathering information at night, so this kind of life suits me just fine.
(Was it because I wanted to escape the glare, or did I just end up like this because of my work as a strategist? I don’t really know.)
Either way, night is when my mind is sharpest.
Still, ever since coming to England, there’ve been more days when I have to get up in the morning.
(Can’t be helped, that’s when the robin’s awake after all.)
Kate, the Fairytale Keeper, was someone who hadn’t appeared in any of the information I’d gathered beforehand.
From what I hear, she had the misfortune of crossing paths with a Crown mission and, as a result, will be living here for a month now as a Fairytale Keeper, under their watch.
(Poor thing. Or rather… her luck’s just atrocious.)
I got a little curious about her, so I’ve been poking at her for fun, but for now, she just looks like an ordinary girl to me.
Thrown into a world far outside the everyday, she’s scared… yet she still does her best to carry out her duty.
(She’s way too serious. She should try living a little more easily.)
Though, that’s probably one of her good points, too.
I realized she’d slipped back into the life she used to live as a robin when she showed me around London.
Nica: …What a fool.
Ring: What is?
A voice called out to me from behind. When I turned around, my younger brother was standing there, just back from his mission.
Nica: …Don’t sneak up on me without a sound. You scared me, Ring.
Ring: S-sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you. You usually notice me, so…
Nica: Ah—
He’s right. Normally, no matter how carefully he hides his footsteps, I always pick up on his presence.
But today, I was quite surprised that I didn’t.
(What’s wrong with me, spacing out like that?)
Ring wiped the grime from his cheek and started walking alongside me.
Ring: You look like you’re in a good mood. Did something nice happen?
Nica: Maybe. Hey, Ring… anything you feel like eating? Big brother’ll treat you while I’m feeling generous.
Ring: Something I want to eat… meat, I guess. ……That’s a nice smell.
Ring leans in and starts sniffing my clothes.
Nica: You’re kidding. Do I smell like meat?
Ring: No, not that. I smell something sweet.
(Oh, I see.)
The same scent as the bath salts I handed to robin a few minutes ago was now lingering over my own body.
(I could tell him where I’d been, but that’d be way too much for Ring.)
His face would probably turn bright red from panicking, so I deliberately kept the reason to myself.
Nica: I had a pretty good time.
I placed my hand on the door to my room and flashed Ring a sly grin.
Nica: It’d be a waste not to enjoy a foreign country while we’re here, right?
After watching me step inside my room, Ring leaves, still wearing that puzzled look.
Nica: Well then… let’s see what happens.
Will she notice the scent of that bath salt?
(I handed it to her thinking it might be fun if she noticed, but even if she doesn’t, it doesn’t really change anything.)
Because things are already unfolding exactly the way I want them to.
Nica: …I’m looking forward to it.
I close my eyes, gazing at the check in my hand.
Life in England feels like it’s about to get interesting.
The next morning, I’m woken by voices coming from outside my room.
Ring: Y-you didn’t… take a bath together, did you!?
Kate: N-no, it’s a misunderstanding!
(So noisy this early in the morning. Oh, I see… Ring must’ve noticed the scent from yesterday’s bath salts.)
Knowing my brother, he’s probably convinced himself that she and I are deeply involved.
(If I left it alone, this could get pretty entertaining… but if it gets any louder, it’ll be unbearable.)
Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I open the door to my room.
Nica: …Shut up. Don’t make such a ruckus in front of someone else’s room.
Standing there are Kate, looking startled, and Ring with his face flushed bright red.
Nica: What’s wrong, Ring? Embarrassed again after touching the robin?
I tease him half in jest. Ring looks back and forth between our faces, then turns away awkwardly.
Ring: …Uh, I’ll, uh… leave now.
Even without any real reason, I reached out and caught her arm as she tried to chase after him.
Nica: Coming all the way to my door and leaving so soon? That’s cold, you know.
Kate: Um… I just wanted to clear up the misunderstanding—
Nica: It’s fine. It’s just that Ring jumped to conclusions again, that’s all.
Nica: More importantly, come sleep with me. If you’re next to me, I might actually get a proper second sleep.
I slip an arm around her waist and guide her toward my room.
Kate hurriedly resists, but seeing that she doesn’t seem entirely opposed, I’m certain of it.
Everything is going exactly the way I want it to.
(I do feel a little bad, but you’re the one who opened your heart to me.)
(If you’re going to resent anyone, resent yourself for being drawn to someone like me.)
Nica: I’m joking. I’d never drag a hesitant girl into my room, you know.
I lean in and place a gentle kiss on the back of her hand.
Nica: See you, milady.
Kate looks at me with a dazed, almost enraptured expression.
I feel a sharp, needle-like pain prick somewhere deep in my chest.
Nica: Honestly… what a pitiful robin.
The words I murmur through the closed door never reach her, fading away unheard.
