I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."
Maryland will become the first US state to ban surveillance pricing in retail stores, after passing Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
Jesus fucking christ that this exists in the first place
I WAS FUCKING WONDERING WHAT THOSE DIGITAL PRICE TAGS WERE ABOUT SUDDENLY i had hoped they were so the workers didn't have to finagle those little papers into the slider part anymore 😭
Hi, yes, that is the OFFICIAL excuse made to me by the guy replacing the paper tags with digital ones at my local Walmart, but the end goal is to remove the numbers off the shelf entirely, replacing them with QR codes that you have to scan with the app…. Which requires your login information….. and also stores your card information so even if you didn’t use your Walmart account at the physical checkout, if you used a card they recognize, they assign that purchase to your Walmart account purchase history.
I explained very clearly to the manager my issue with the meat section not having the price tags listed, and they claimed it was only going to be for the meat, since meat is by weight, and the price of each item is printed on the packs of each item.
Sure. That’s how they get their foot in the door. Fast forward not even two weeks, and here we are:
Bar codes. No prices, no item descriptions. No price stickers on the individual items. Heck, not even the name of the item that is SUPPOSED to be there.
No. The only way to see the price is to scan it on your phone app, which is also recording what you looked at recently, as a way of gauging what you might be looking for in the future.
So here’s what we’re gonna do gang:
Every time you go into a store that has implemented these price-less tags:
Take 1-3 items up to the cash register. Ask the cashier for the price, or hit the price check item on the self checkout, which will likely call over the attendant.
Express that you didn’t actually want it, you just couldn’t see on the shelf how much it was.
POLITELY, AND WITH A THANK YOU FOR THE PRICE CONFIRMATION, Give the items to the cashier or attendant to put back.
When they inevitably try to push the app, politely decline. If pressed for why not, say you don’t want to have to carry your phone in-hand the whole time you are shopping in order to see how much things cost. (Not having cell service or data to use the app is NOT a valid excuse, as stores already often have complimentary WiFi AND more stores will provide WiFi rather than give up on this push for surveillance pricing)
If it’s a shelf-stable item, the cashier will have to set it aside, taking up room in their limited operating space, and eventually pass it off to someone to put in a holding area to put back later. If it’s a fridge/freezer item, it might have to get tossed due to food product sale regulations.
In either case, you are making it a pain in the ass for them to have these digital bar codes. Tie up the checkouts. Give the employees more busywork that the company has to pay them to do. Hurt their bottom line having to toss the pint of ice cream you carried around in your cart for 20 minutes before giving it back to the cashier.
Yes, call your reps. Yes, push for more legislation like this in more places. But also take an extra minute out of your shopping trip to MAKE IT HURT for companies to pull this shit.
I've seen some people in the notes express (very fair) concern that this is only going to inconvenience already under-paid laborers, and not have any impact on corporate. While I can't speak for every company or every store, I do work in a grocery store and I can tell you this is precisely the kind of thing that would have an impact, especially if people are doing it en masse. Stores absolutely track their shrink numbers, and they do draw distinctions between what gets stolen, damaged, or wasted for other reasons. If people are making it clear that the reason they're bringing things to the cashier is that the prices are not adequately represented on the displays, and rather than improving business it's wasting product, slowing down transactions, and causing confusion and mistrust in customers, that is a language that shareholders speak.
Things to consider when writing a character!! --1
⊹ What do they want vs what do they need. these should not be the same thing. what they want is the surface goal ( the job, the person, the revenge, the answer.) What they need is the thing underneath that they can't name yet. The story is what happens in the gap between those two things. if they're identical your character has nowhere to go.
⊹ What are they wrong about. Not morally wrong necessarily. just. what belief do they hold that the story is going to test. What assumption do they make about themselves or the world that turns out to be incomplete? A character without a wrong belief is already finished. They have no arc, give them something to learn even if learning it hurts them.
⊹ How do they talk when they're nervous. Do they go quiet or do they talk too much? do they deflect with jokes? do they get weirdly formal? do they ask questions instead of answering them? the way a person behaves under pressure is who they actually are. And it should be different from how they behave when they're comfortable.
⊹ What do they find funny. this one sounds small and it is not small at all. Humour is worldview. What makes someone laugh tells you what they value, what they're afraid of, how they handle pain. A character with no sense of humour is just flat. even the gravest person finds something absurd. find the thing.
⊹ What are they ashamed of? not their tragic backstory. their actual shame. The small ugly thing they would never say out loud. The time they were a coward. The feeling they pretend not to have. The desire they think disqualifies them from being a good person. Shame is where the most interesting character work lives and most writers skip straight over it :(
⊹ What do they do when no one is watching? how do they move through a space alone. What do they reach for when they're sad. What do they do with their hands??? Public behaviour IS performance. Private behaviour is truth. you don't have to show all of it but you have to know it or the character will feel hollow in a way the reader notices without being able to name.

If I see a company advertising with AI, it makes me lose trust in them and the services and goods they supply. If you’re too slimy and cheap to hire a voice actor for a 15 second ad or an artist to design promotional graphics, what other corners are you cutting? There was a nurse posting pictures of the AI generated advertisement his hospital posted everywhere and he was pointing out the errors in the image like the stethoscope having two sets of earpieces and the doctor’s fingers being wrong. I think if I walked into a hospital and saw that bullshit I’d be like “They’re charging me $80k for this procedure and not paying advertising people to do their job. Are they paying custodians to do their job? What else are they cheaping out on and could it be something that kills me?”
100% agreed. But not just with ads.
If I have a question, do I have to fail with an AI chatbot before I get a real person? If yes, I'm no longer interested.
Any use of AI is a mad red flag.
A bus may have only a couple of passengers, especially at the beginning or end of its route. But let's also take fuel efficiency into account.
If there's one person on a bus because that person cannot or doesn't want to drive, the bus is succeeding.
I read a study once on the fuel efficiency of various types of commuter vehicles (car, bus, train) on a per person basis and the number of people needed riding public transit to match the "efficiency" of cars is shockingly low. A bus needs to carry like 3-4 people to be fuel efficient, and trains require 2-3 per train car. Both often carry two dozen or more during peak hours, more than justifying any perceived requirements for efficiency for the train or bus to provide service the entire day.
And that's just the immediate comparison. In order to be effective, public transit has to be comfortable and convenient. If you run fewer buses to ensure they are full, they get packed and uncomfortable. Transporting people like a tin of sardines is not a respectful way to do this. And screw mobility devices - there's no space. Running fewer buses, means people are less likely to have a route that matches up with their schedule efficiently - they have to wait longer for a bus or wait longer to start work. Been there. It sucks. If you only run buses at the beginning and end of the day (a situation my suburb had going on when I was growing up), you strand people at work. They can't take a half day. They can't go in late, after an appointment.
Building your transit around the idea that the buses must be full becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of transit failure. They eventually stopped the bus route that came to my suburb.
Transit is a service not a money maker. To be effective, it has to be frequent, comfortable, and convenient. This means there will be times the bus is less full. And that's okay. It's supposed to work that way.

ive always been willing to die on the hill of cis women being able to beat cis men in sports so nobody will ever ever make me concerned about trans women in womens sports even if i was delusional enough to believe that was a comparable situation. do i think a cis woman could beat a trans woman in fucking pickleball or whatever? Buddy I think a cis woman could beat a cis male bodybuilder in sports. You will not get me
this feels too important (and correct!!) to leave in the notes
Research has shown that women, due to specific reasons, have regularly produced faster times than men in marathon swimming.
The sport’s governing body says there is little difference in performance between genders. Should men and women compete head-to-head as indi
Uncover the unique differences between men’s and women's gymnastics at the Olympics. Explore how these events contrast in style and rules.
Women outperform men in many sports, and in many instances, the men's versions of these sports are rewritten into completely different versions so that they can't be compared.
And if your reaction to this is "well women don't outperform men in skills that we typically find impressive" I would implore you to think about why things women tend to be better at than men are valued less by society.
If your reaction is "well that's cherrypicking examples, its such a small handful of formalized sports" I'd implore you to think of why so many popular sports are structured around the specific set of skills men are better at.
Because the answer starts with m and ends with isogyny.
Whenever I see this debate I remember how teenage girl (Jackie Mitchell) struck out Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth and Babe threw a tantrum and they didn't allow women in professional baseball anymore

Why is it that every time I google something like "Are olives poisonous to cats" the top results are always like "Fun fact: Cats are carnivores! This means that they eat meat. There is no reason to include olives in a cat's diet. You should feed your cat cat food, which is dry or wet food especially designed for cats. You can purchase this at a store." like is there a single person alive on the planet who's googled "Are blueberry muffins safe for cats" because they're planning on switching their cat to a muffin-only diet??? No, I'm asking because the little bastard somehow popped open the packet while I was putting away the groceries and dragged one under the couch before I could react and now I need to know if I should call the after-hours vet. Movie recs?
YEAH I HAVE ONE. Listen, if:
You want to see a film about a boy wanting to be a lion dancer
You ever wondered if and how people were ever going to animate FULL LION DANCE SEQUENCES
You are aching for character designs and character animation that defy current style conventions
You crave haptic visuals. You crave something lush, authentic and grounded. You want to watch something that genuinely looks like it was MADE to be in the cinemas again.
You want to experience a film stick a landing in one of the most breathtaking and unique endings you’ll ever witness.
Then my friend, you absolutely HAVE to watch this indie Chinese animated masterpiece, I Am What I Am / 雄狮少年 (2021), directed by Sun HaiPeng.
It's a sports film with a straightforward storyline: 18-year-old Ah Juan from a village in Guangdong wants to be a lion dancer. He's a sickly bullied kid, has silly pals he brings along for the ride, gets taught by a washed-out middle aged mentor, has to go through several training arcs to Get Good, the whole schtick.
This one takes its time at the start, and for sure has its outdated humour and bumpy moments. But through the whole film, there is so much whimsy, charm and HEART. With such natural scripting + voice acting, KILLER sound design with amazing soundtrack + tonally resonant song choices too. Authenticity BREATHES out of this film in every small bit of character animation, dialogue and especially in the background details. Highly recommend pausing from time to time just to take everything in.
And then the halfway point hits you.
I Am What I Am briefly becomes a narrative of the working class too, particularly migrant workers. I also personally think it has a really poignant take on the struggling artist - one that western counterparts won't be able to deliver with the same nuance. It highlights something honest, real and resonant in Chinese culture, but has the director Sun Haipeng's voice of defiance that CRIES and RINGS out towards the end. He wanted to say something, and by JOVE DOES HE DELIVER in an ending sequence that leaves you with shrimp emotions.
In times like this, we need art. And maybe art is something larger than ourselves too. This film encapsulates this Dead Poet's Society quote in a really different and refreshing way:
"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."
You have, you absolutely HAVE to see I Am What I Am. It's so special to me, and I hope anyone that watches it sees where I'm getting at too.
And hey, get this.
THE WHOLE THING FOR FREE ON YOUTUBE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES. It's RIGHT THERE for the taking!
The film is about three teenagers who were ignored and bullied by others. By coincidence, they began their lion dance journey and under the
So what are you waiting for? Buckle up, go forth and watch I Am What I Am!! Please spread the word about this film, more folks need to see it.
