I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything

my friend just had an art show and they were communicating with the gallerist over email. They could clearly tell that the gallerist was using AI to respond to their emails, but just rolled their eyes and moved on.

and then on the day of the show, my friend asks, "where is the camera I requested?"

gallerist: "you didn't request a camera"

my friend: "I did, and you confirmed that you would have one here."

gallerist: "that isn't true."

and then she proceeded to pull up the email thread, and my friend could see that every single email they had sent had been summarized by AI, and that the gallerist had then had AI write a response to them based on the AI summary, and that the AI had detected that they needed a camera, and confirmed on behalf of the gallerist that they would bring a camera, but because the gallerist had offloaded the work of actually reading and responding, she simply hadn't actually made any note of it herself, therefore didn't bring it, nor did she even know one was needed.

so my friend had done all of this communication about their needs and expectations to be able to make the show possible, and the person whose job it was to read that information and get it done had simply.... not read the information and not done it. because AI.

Chapter 45. "More Allies"

Marinette was back at school, waiting for Ms. Bustier to start class, idly fidgeting with her phone. When Marinette looked down at her phone she smiled at the text Luka sent her.

Marinette checked when she heard the door open to the classroom, seeing that it was just Rose, Marinette went back to looking at her phone. Rose made her way to Marinette with a determined look.

Marinette looked up to see Rose standing in front of her with a serious look on her face.

"Rose? Is something the matter?" Marinette asked, a little hesitant at the look on the blonde's face.

"Can we meet up after school to talk? With Juleka, Ivan, Mylene, and Nino?" Rose questioned.

Marinette thought for a moment, then replied, "Yeah I've got time, we can meet at the park across the street?"

Rose nodded and smiled then went back to her seat. Marinette watched her walk away wondering what that was about. She fidgeted in her seat as class started, suddenly hit with a wave of nervousness. What did they want to talk to her about? It wasn't another adrienette scheme was it? But Marinette thought about what people Rose wanted to bring, Nino and Juleka knew that Lila was a liar, did that mean Ivan, Mylene and Rose knew too? Marinette cautiously let herself hope that maybe she had more allies than previously thought.

The day dragged on and went by fast depending on if Marinette was staring at the clock or not. Although, she felt more secure in her feelings that this afternoon would turn out well; after texting Luka on and off throughout the day, and rereading the text that said he would meet Marinette at the park so she could have moral support, Marinette felt better having Luka there.

Lila was quiet through the day but Marinette still kept an eye on her considering what she tried to do last night. As the last bell rang for the day, the teacher called out pages to read for homework and Marinette was packing up quickly to meet up with Luka on the steps outside.

Rushing out Marinette missed the look Rose and Juleka gave each other, as they walked a more normal pace to the park.

When Marinette reached the steps and saw Luka waiting for her at the bottom, Marinette ran at him and Luka opened his arms to catch her. A grin overtook Marinette's face as Luka caught her and swung her around before finally setting her down and grabbed her hand to hold.

"Ready, Melody?" Luka asked. Marinette nodded and walked with Luka to the park. Rose, Juleka, Ivan and Mylene watched Marinette and Luka walk to the park holding hands, Rose gave a squeak and started shaking in place with a wide grin on her face.

Luka and Marinette reached a picnic bench, they sat and waited for the rest to get there. Juleka and Rose reached the bench first and sat next to Marinette and Luka and waiting for Ivan, Mylene, and Nino.

Ivan and Mylene sat across from Marinette and Luka and left space for Nino to sit next to them. Then Nino reached them, a uncharacteristically serious look on his face.

"First off, thank you for meeting with us, Marinette, and second," Nino started then everyone spoke at once.

"We're sorry!"

Marinette was speechless for a moment then smiled at them.

"Thank you, I appreciate the apology." Marinette said, and nodded for Nino to continue.

"Ok, so everyone here now knows that Lila is a liar, and what she has done to you and the class is unjust. So we did some digging." Nino stated, then turned and pulled out some papers from his backpack and laid them out.

Curious, Marinette picked up one of the sheets and read it over, Luka did the same next to her. The more Marinette read the wider her eyes became. It was details of Lila's last school and how she ostracized the kind popular girl and turned everyone against her then caused the girl to move to another school. It also mentioned how some of the people bullied the girl before she moved and cited as Lila the cause for everything before Lila moved and skipped out on consequences.

"Luka-" Marinette started then stopped, this information was exactly what she needed to enact her plans.

Luka grabbed her hand and squeezed, "I know." He whispered to her. Gathering herself, Marinette looked up at Nino, Ivan and Mylene.

"Do you want to help me take Lila down?" Marinette asked, her expression serious as she looked at each of them.

"Yes." Nino said first, then Ivan, Rose, and Juleka confirmed after him. Marinette's eyes traveled to Mylene who looked like she was thinking deeply.

"If it makes you uncomfortable you don't have to," Marinette said gently to her. Mylene looked up and spoke softly.

"I'm not apposed, just a bit nervous, do you have a plan?"

Marinette grinned and glanced at Luka who was already looking at her.

"Yes, we do. Ok, so here's what we have for now." Marinette explained her plans and how the new information played into them. After going over things, Mylene added her agreement to help take down Lila.

Marinette started to divide up the plan into parts that they could help with, things would be easier to do with help now, and Marinette could help but smile brilliantly at Luka, happy that she wasn't alone and that people were starting to see reason.

After cleaning up and saying their goodbyes, Luka and Marinette walked back to the bakery together, hands clasped and enjoying the afternoon air. When Luka reached the back door to Marinette's place, Luka leaned against the door frame and smiled at Marinette.

"What?" Marinette asked.

"You are so amazing, Melody, and I'm so proud of you." Luka said with a smile, his eyes shinned with joy.

"Thank you for being here with me, I don't know if I could have done it without your support." Marinette replied, as she tugged on his hand to bring it up to her cheek and laid her face into his hand. Luka's breath hitched at the look on Marinette's face. Blue eyes full of joy and love kept Luka spell bound.

Marinette turned her face to kiss the palm of Luka's hand. Luka's eyes widened and a blush bloomed on his cheeks. Marinette smiled and let go of him.

"See you later Rock star," Marinette said and walked into the building. Luka stood still for a moment before his heart started double time after the pause.

That girl was going to be the death of him and Luka couldn't be happier for it.

I have hEDS and my physical therapist explained standard carpal tunnel prevention exercises and stretches will cause me serious injury. The sort that may require surgery. Hypermobile people, especiallh those with EDS, have bungee cords for tendons amd ligaments.

“Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions. Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time. In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows: “The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.” In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts.”

America has a weird relationship with cults where they’re terrified of small cults (or organizations they think are cults) but completely normalized massive cults that hurt many more people (eg: LDS Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Amish, Scientology, most Megachurches)

To anybody asking if the Amish are a cult, the answer is yes, very much so.

They’re a high control group that isolate you from society. The cult decides how you dress, how you behave, who you marry and how. They control what you know, blocking all information from the outside world. They control how you feel and what you’re allowed to think with threats of both social and supernatural harm. They’re a cult.

The best method to determine if a group is a cult, in my opinion, is Steven Hassan’s (cult expert and former cult member himself) BITE model.

BITE stands for Behavior Control, Information Control, Thought Control, and Emotional Control.

The more points a group “scores” on the model, the more of a cult it is.

I think this model is the best one for several reasons:

It’s more nuanced than “cult” or “not cult” and doesn’t make false equivalences between groups

It’s versatile, applying to groups big and small, and cults of all kinds, religious, political, financial, etc.

It focuses on what’s important, which is what the cult does to its members, and those members’ experiences, and not on irrelevant details like how uncommon their doctrines are or whether they have a charismatic leader

It’s tricky with parenting, because parents have to control their children’s lives to start with, since newborns are incapable of taking care of themselves.

A healthy parent will gradually relinquish control as their child grows and becomes more capable. And even while they’re in charge, they will treat their child with honesty and transparency and respect. They’ll prepare their child for independence, giving them the tools they need to live their own life.

A culty, abusive parent will go far beyond the level of control that their role requires. They will use manipulation and undue influence, taking advantage of their child’s naivete and malleable mind for the parent’s own benefit and agenda. They will continue to exercise this control well into their child’s adulthood, possibly their whole life.
