How?!

Colt showing up and answering questions and being a general chaotic nuisance but proving that the stuff they're learning can be applied to jobs that aren't just working in a lab - he uses a lot of what they're learning basics of in stunt work!

It's a yearly thing from the very first year of Ryland teaching.

Fast forward to the year that Ryland disappears on his class, gets sent to space against his will while the world at large is told he volunteered.

Colt shows up the same time he had every year to see Ry's kids. The looks of hope in their eyes cut to his soul, as do the fallen smiles when they realize it's Colt at the front of the room, not Ryland.

But hear me out, Coltland twins where Colt knew what was happening and had sent to help calm Grace’s nerves so he would be easier to sedate. It obviously doesn’t work.

Colt is usually seen as the tough, independent brother but I think he would be secretly clingy and sentimental. Here is my completely made up/non canon proof:

- Colt was originally left-handed but he forced himself to be right-handed so him and Ryland would be the same. It lead to his handwriting being notoriously bad. Teachers called Ryland to their classrooms on multiple occasions because he was the only one who could always read his papers.

- Colt was a natural at driving but pretended to be bad so Ryland didn’t have to repeat driving school alone. Ryland figured it out as soon as he saw him ace his drivers test.

- Ryland loved going to the movie theater. Colt always went but his ADHD made focusing a struggle. One time Ryland saw Colt snapping a rubber band on his wrist to stay focused during a particularly long movie. Right after that, Ryland coincidentally decided he liked watching them at home with popcorn refill breaks in the middle of movie.

- Colt didn’t want to have a different last name for his stage name. The only reason he did it was because his agent told him it would be better for Ryland’s academic career if Colt’s stunt work didn’t show up when someone Googled “Dr Grace”. He still cried when he signed the papers.

- Colt thought the UNSCO situation was hilarious until Ryland started crying over the phone in the airport. He backed out of a very good film to be in San Francisco as soon as Ryland landed.

- When Colt travels for a movie, he sends Ryland a postcard. Ryland always replies with a postcard from San Francisco. It started as a joke but one time he didn’t send one and Colt called him to make sure he was alive. Ryland always sent one after that. Colt keeps all of them in a box under his bed.

how much i looooove my coltland twins. these are all so spot-on. my additions below:

i’m 100% certain that colt is the more likely to contact and call out of the two of them, considering that he’s always on the move. there’s a bit of responsibility on his end to assure that ryland knows if colt has screwed up his back again or busted his nose. ryland has pointed out on occasion that he’s got the short end of the stick when it comes to being colt’s emergency contact; one of them is being called up MUCH more than the other.

ryland definitely despises visiting colt on set for the sheer reason that a PA mistakenly guided him to a free fall stunt. when he realized what was happening, he definitely yelped. high-pitched. the cast and crew were so confused until ryland was yelling in circles about how he wasn’t colt. obviously, colt thought it was the funniest thing ever. and now, ryland only ever goes straight to colt’s trailer. no exploring involved.

the fact that they’re so clearly different doesn’t override the fact that they both have such an ego on them. their cockiness and headstrong nature gets applied in different ways—colt with his stunts and ryland with his research—but it’s very clear that they both have it.

colt starting in hollywood while ryland is doing his undergrad in molecular bio, there’s a little bit of separation anxiety involved. the proudest ryland ever feels in those four years is when his study groups suggest going to the movies and he knows that his brother is going to be in all the clips where the leads are supposed to be jumping off roofs or rolling over cars.

the twins were separated at birth. their mother wanted to get away, and she was allowed to by their father — allowed, because she knew without it she'd be found dead sooner than later — but she had to leave court with him, because he was old enough to be of use, and one of the twins — because their father wanted another child, it just so happened that two were born

and she did, leaving colt with him. she moved, and she gave ryland the life all of her children deserved, except that she never told him about who she had to left behind for him to be safe. and while, yes, the man wanted to have a second son, that want soon turned into demand, explaining why he had so many expectation for colt to follow in the first place

Basically, after the events of the movie, the whole story about how Colt managed to do all this detective work while a bunch of people are actively trying to kill him gets around in the movie industry to the point that essentially everyone is convinced he’s a genius. (He is, but he’d never believe it.)

One day, someone in the industry really needs to track someone down. It could be a personal thing, it could be another Tom Ryder situation (minus the framing) where an actor is off on a bender and they want to keep it on the down low. Regardless, someone needs to be found, and they get the idea to ask Colt to do it.

So Colt is having a normal day when some big movie person shows up at set with a boatload of cash and is begging him to find this person. At first he’s like, “Uhhh no? I would rather never do that again actually. Also I have a job?? I’m busy??”

Then the person offers him even more money, like a frankly ridiculous amount of money. Like so much money that it would be insane to refuse it. So Colt is like, “You know what? Fine, just this once.” And because this isn’t a secret plot to murder him he tracks this person down in like a couple hours and brings them back. Then he goes home to Jody with a crap ton of money.

He expains it to her, and she kind of panics at first, but after hearing how mundane it actually was without the murder plot she calms down, and is like, “I actually kinda get where they’re coming from. You are really good at this.”

Cue Colt refusing to acknowledge that. “Anyway! It’s not like this will ever happen again,” Colt says. “It was just a one off crazy person with way too much money and a big imagination.”

It is not one off.

Word gets out that Colt did this job, then suddenly people keep showing up asking him to track people down. After a few months of this, he’s done it like five or six times, and deep down he’s really starting to enjoy it. One day Jody is like, “If this is gonna keep happening we need to set up a proper business.”

Cue Colt becoming a proper private detective/bounty hunter on the side.

Also in the tv show Colt has exatensivly studied laws surrounding citizen arrests and bounty hunting to make sure he doesn’t go to jail, so movie Colt will also end up doing this. Probably because Jody will force him to.

Anyway, this is a long winded way to say that Colt accidentally starts moonlighting as a bounty hunter and it’s awesome.

This could be extra fun if you throw the coltland twins, or coltlandgentry siblings in there.
