Okay, I need to add some clarification and correction to this.
This photo is known as The Pale Blue Dot. It was taken by Voyager 1, a space probe meant to explore the outer reaches of the solar system. Far from dying, she's still out there doing her job and is the furthest human made object from Earth.
In the mid 80's, they knew Voyager 1 would soon pass beyond where her cameras would matter and she needed to save power, so the question became: what's the last thing she should take a picture of?
Carl Sagan and Carolyn Porco both independently had the same thought: take a picture of Earth. Us. Yes, it would be essentially just one pixel. It wouldn't be scientifically useful. It might even damage the camera because of how intense the sun is, even forty times as far from Earth as Earth is from the Sun. But they got it sorted because it's NASA.
3.7 million (not billion) miles away, that's Earth. Caught in bands of light, artifacts of the Sun's incredible power even 4 million miles away. We are an island in a sea of radiation and vacuum and it's all we have.
I can't say it better than Sagan did, so I'll let you alone with his words:
From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there â on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

I think the truth is just a lot better.
I feel like contouring is lowkey racist
Is this a joke?
Noo lol I knew Iâd regret phrasing it that way. This is tumblr, after allâŚ
Itâs not âpeople who contour are themselves automatically racistâ but that the desired face shape created by contouring is one that, at the end of the day, pretty much reflects existing white standards of beauty. A thinner, pointier nose, smaller chin, high angled cheekbones and (on occasion) smaller lips. Also if youâre darker skinned you have to use a much lighter shade of foundation  thus ending up with an overall lighter face.
I probably could have phrased that better.
No, you are absolutely correct. In fact it is not even lowkey in the performance arts/entertainment world. Iâve known how to contour since I was 9, because I was in ballet. I was taught by an older Asian dancer who told me that I was already darker than everyone else, my face couldnât look different too. So she showed me the basics, then left me with a picture of a white person as the goal to emulate.Â
Itâs always been explicit and intentionally racist in terms of what is considered correct contouring technique is to emulate white associated features. Which is not to say that contouring is bad, but it is good to ask ourselves why we do not contour to make our noses look wider and more distinguished. Or why we donât shadow and highlight to make the face look perfectly round? While contouring is not bad ( and is actually very cool to literally be able to control the way people perceive your face, itâs like magic) itâs good to ask ourselves why we contour the way we do.

I am kinda being a rape apologist here, but there is a logical explanation for sis-in-law wanting Ye Li pregnant ASAP

Looking back on 2020, I think it's hilarious that Wellerman of all shanties is the one that blew up online. It's not a song about life on the high seas or adventuring
It's the "Where the fuck is my delivery" song
Logically speaking I don't see any reason why mo jingli shouldn't inherit the throne. He was the son of the crown Prince, so technically he should have inherited the throne anyways. Also he managed to plot and plan so much so well while keeping it all hidden which is admirable.
But every time I think of him I think of him whining near the pond threating to throw himself into the water if his crush doesn't talk to him it's so pathetic that any cool thing he did afterwards or his insane face card just get cancelled out.
Anyways, i hope they kill the king, kill mo jingli and make the ML the King.
âBecause the truth is, tech doesnât have an image problem. It doesnât have a message problem. It has an intention problem. Whatâs wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasnât successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. Whatâs wrong is that heâs trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product thatâs designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isnât that you havenât told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.â

Similarly, imginn.com works for most Instagram addresses. I still havenât found one for Facebook.
Come to think of it, it really is insane that my entire country is burning alive and literally no one in the rest of the world cares. Thousands of Indians are dying every day from the heat, it's 45+ degrees in multiple areas, the government couldn't give two fucks, we're getting severe warnings and red alerts, and not a soul outside of South Asia is speaking about it because why would you ever care about brown people

Me, before I saw this: old timey dancing in cartoons has to be over-exaggerated for effect
Me, now: old timey dancing in cartoons had to be toned down to promote a sense of realism because they were too good at it

Ive been saying this for years. You need to understand blue eyeshadow to understand anything at all. Today, blue eyeshadow is regarded as a "choice." Its either trendy or tacky or outdated, depending on the shade and style of application. But for about 30 years in the late 20th century, maybe the 50s through the 80s, blue eyeshadow was regarded as subtle, conservative, middle-of-the-road. Feminine. A "correct" shade to use. Brown or beige eyeshadow was the new thing, too subtle and casual to look like a "full face" of makeup. My grandmother (an enthusiastically conventional woman) has only ever worn blue eyeshadow.
The last 10 or 15 years have seen a real takeover of neutrals, beiges and grays and whites, in consumer goods and interior design. We've all seen the car color chart. Other people smarter than me have discussed the reasons for this, the caution brought on by economic instability. Nobody wants to paint their walls green because their home isnt a place to get comfortable, its an investment that will need to be made palatable for a new buyer (and why give yourself the extra task of repainting when youll have so much else to do when you move).
Neutral overload (and "clean design," with its lack of ornamentation) is aimed at creating a consistent, timeless, elegant look. Its adherents dont understand that this is also a trend. This subtle, conservative, middle-of-the-road design choice will look tacky and ostentatious someday. And necause you value timelessness, this will embarrass you.
i think, in a twisted way, ye li's mother's debt to prince ding and his family ended up saving ye li's life.. because she still had a promise to keep. and that kept her going until she finally found her way down the mountain..
Whatever part of Ye Li caring for MXY was her guilt over what her mom did, a much bigger part was her childhood crush on the hero that saved her life and planning what to do for him was her desperate only link to the world outside her delusions of people on Lishan still being alive. The thought of MXY kept her alive for 6-7 years of solitary confinement. Her love for MXY is twisted into all kinds of things in her heart and past but pity for MXY is not and never has been part of it.
Whatever MXY said of pity applies to him way more than it does to Ye Li.
Great addition. I wholeheartedly agree that her feelings for MXY must have played a big part in helping her survive all those years. I'm actually quite glad that she had already met him prior to the whole debacle 8 years ago, because it really helps us put into perspective the depth of ye li's true character (which is driven by her love/care and not by pity)
When i mentioned prince ding though, i meant mo xiu wen (shouldve mentioned former prince ding..) and hence the debt which would have helped keep her determined (since its a promise only she could keep and that would have put an obligation on her to stay alive, beyond just her own desire to live)
Totally agree that how her mother died and MXYâs big brotherâs last words created in Ye Liâs mind an obligation to live until she had helped the Prince Ding household rise up and corrected the historical record.
The way this obligation is connected to her being the last survivor of Lishan and Lishan being one of the factions that let down the Prince of Ding, so she needs to also pay the debt that Lishan ones. And the current Prince Ding is her childhood hero.
She told Prince Li that if the original engagement went through she would have had to kill him on their wedding night.
But I think at this point the only man she could ever care for in any way resembling care of a wife for a husband is MXY. She has an obsession with taking revenge on everyone who wronged her mother or Lishan and preserving Lishanâs legacy. MXY might be the only male in the Kingdom that is connected enough to her obsessions and delusions that he will register to her as an âImportant Personâ as someone âyou need to learn what makes this person happy to be happy yourselfâ.
Donât assume malice. Assume ignorance. Life is easier, the world is kinder, and you can educate. Actual malice is pretty rare, I find.Â
Always remember Hanlonâs RazorââNever assume malice when incompetence will suffice as an explanation.â
Thatâs said, never forget Fred Clarkâs Law, either: âSufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.â Thereâs a certain point at which ignorance becomes maliceâat which there is simply no way to become that ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

one of the hardest things to learn as a depressed former Gifted Kid⢠is that half-assed is better than nothing. take the 50%, 40%, even 20% job. scrubbing your face is better than not taking a shower at all. picking up your clothes is better than never cleaning. nibbling on some bread is better than starving.
DO THINGS HALFWAY. NOW YOUâRE 100% BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE BEFORE.
One of my college professors used to say âanything worth doing is worth doing poorly.â I didnât understand that for years because I didnât do anything poorly, I couldnât do anything poorly, I had to Do Everything Perfectly.
But brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all when that 2 minutes seems exhausting. Doing ten minutes of yoga is better than 10 minutes of sitting when 30 minutes of cardio sounds impossible. Changing my clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible. Standing on the porch for a few minutes is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because I donât have the energy to go anywhere.
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly⌠because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.
someone please hit me over the head with this post every day for like the next week thanks. a mention, a reblog with text, a message, something.
You must understand that perfectionism isnât striving for excellence, itâs a crippling fear of being flawed and therefore worth abandonment or punishment. Itâs a kind of psychological avoidance. Youâre avoiding fear and failure , not embracing the thing you want to do bc if it was about the thing you want to do youâd be fine with partial victory.
My gardening⌠Just put in some peas and carrots almost 2 months after the optimal time. The peas will have enough warm weeks to grow, but the carrots probably not⌠But I did something and the weeds will have a little less space so next year I might get the planting going a bit earlierâŚ
