not now sweetie, mommy is watching how the massive girlbossification of female characters has led to the belief that weak and vulnerable female characters are badly written characters because apparently every woman needs to be outspoken and witty and snarky and brave in order to be considered “complex” and have any value in a piece of media!!
waittttt girlie i wanna know abt your overwatch oc… for those questions 4 + 8 but feel free to say more :)
WOOOOTT didn’t think anyone would ask about her!! Omg…
Her name is Rebecca Barlow, better known as Hijack
4. In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?
Overwatch is very idealistic with its story. Though it has a futuristic setting, it doesn’t meddle often with the dystopian tropes you often see in the genre— but when it does, I think it’s at its most compelling.
I considered that when I made Hijack. I really liked the concept of the Phreaks (Hazard’s group of misfits using stolen upgrades to fight the good fight) and I was disheartened to get so little insight into his crew. So I made my own character!
Hijack is a failed cloning experiment made by Vishkar to test tech on “human” subjects, supposedly to avoid crossing any legal ethical boundaries. The subject they cloned consented, was paid, and went on their way— while their DNA was cloned over and over again to create these “husks”, as Moira calls them.
Hijack had some really advanced tech installed. And since it couldn’t be removed safely, the Phreaks just took her along with them.
Mostly, I wanted to harken back to the darker undertones of overwatch!
8. What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?
Not much! I strive to make characters I can’t relate to so that they keep me guessing! It’s more fun that way. But of course it’s impossible not to relate a little— I relate to how desperate Hijack is to prove she existed! She wants to leave her mark before she’s gone and I think we can all understand that feeling.
8, 12, and/or 14 for that OC ask thing about Diana? 👀
Hiiiii! Yayy my girl Diana!!
8. What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?
Her sensitivity! I cry so so so easily. And honestly Dee cries less than I would if I were in her shoes lol.
12. What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?
I’ve really struggled to grapple with both sides of her characterization! In my heart, she’s just whiny and bratty— despite how cruel and selfish she can be! Maybe I’m just seeing Dee the way she sees herself!
14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
As said above, I need to keep in mind that Diana is not “just a silly girl.” In the same way that her husband is not just the “unassuming, charming twin”. It’s difficult because that’s how Diana views herself and her husband and I’m writing from her perspective (for the most part).
Aside from that, I need to also keep in mind that Diana is considered “new money” and that influences EVERYTHING. The way she talks, reacts to things, how she’s treated, how she behaves, etc. And there’s something freeing about that! I can write crazy scenes like the duel between her and Esma because, as Esma later says, Diana can get away with it because no one expects any better from her.
(As a side note: I was inspired by that conversation you can have with Wallace where he bad mouths the twins for their “Tyvian blood”. And considering the way Treavor speaks of them like their animals, I can further push the envelope for things Diana can get away with. For all Custis’s talk, they’re not half as refined as they think they are— something he denies and Morgan indulges in!)
I like when fic length/book length/movie length is its own punchline
characters: Ah, I'm so glad that's all over now :). But luckily that's done and dealt with and we can all resume our normal lives now :)
fic length: Chapter 9 out of 48
Odysseus: Thank you for the concern, but brother, I can assure you Our journey is almost done.

Questions About Creating Your OCs
‘Cause sometimes the stories of how OCs come to be are just as interesting as the OCs, themselves. Tell me how your virtual kids came into the world.
What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?
Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?
How did you choose their name?
In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?
Is there any significance behind their hair color?
Is there any significance behind their eye color?
Is there any significance behind their height?
What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?
Are they based off of you, in some way?
If they have an LI, how much of their character is tailored to be compatible to that person?
Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?
What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?
How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?
If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
What is something about your OC can make you laugh?
What is something about your OC can make you cry?
Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?
What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?
What is your favorite fact about your OC?
I’ve lots of grievances with Overwatch (as is my right, I’ve been playing since 2017) but one of the less serious ones is that they saw how much everyone was shipping 76 and Reaper and so they DID make 76 gay…. just not for Reaper 😂
I need to play DAI again.
Hi! Did you know that Raphael Colantonio is playing Dishonored on his youtube channel? Do you think that Dishonored 3 is on its way? He's been liking comments about it
Yea I’ve heard! I haven’t had a chance to watch them myself yet but I think it’s cool!
Personally, I’m doubtful. And I don’t even really know how I’d feel about a third installment. On one hand, it’d be nice for a crumb of more content from this universe. And on the other, I can’t help but wonder if a third game, made ten years after the second and by a new studio and with new creatives, would manage to capture and replicate what made that first game so excellent. Even Dishonored 2 was a near miss for me and I outright despise Death of the Outsider.
Either way, I’m eager to see! What do you guys think?

I wrote my fair share of x reader fics when I was getting started, but I gotta ask: what’s the appeal to those fics where the author writes something completely nondescript and allows the reader to choose the character from a selected list? Like as a reader, what do you get out of that?
