got to thinking about my old shuake wind band au from a billion years ago (four years ago) and while i'd love to go back to it i don't think it's meant to be. so fuck it here's my notes from back then cleaned up a bit cause i think they're still interesting [with additions and clarifications in brackets]
akira - percussion in band, piano since childhood [i made akira a percussionist bc of how much adaptability it takes to be able to play every instrument well and be the rock solid foundation that everyone else relies on. i also needed him to be a pianist for the duet stuff and it is such a Classical and Proper thing your parents enroll you into when you're 9]
ann - soprano 2 in choir, maybe flute [in the fic i made her a piccolo which also double 2nd/3rd flute sometimes. she's a little bit inspired by two friends who got denied WE spots for years bc they "needed a strong player to support the lower lvl band"]
yusuke - bassoon. it fits
makoto - 1st or 2nd horn. warm elegant sound but capable of blowing ur ears out
futaba with a tuba, or maybe euph bc shes so small... actually alto sax might fit her gremlin nature better [ i can see her playing louder and better than everyone else and the director being like ok can you tone it down to hide the fact that no one else can play]
haru - 1st clarinet, chalumeau to clarion u get what i mean [i had to google how to spell chalumeau cause i've never seen it written out]
goro - 1st oboe (bc scholarship money and solos and high-strung/petty disposition. he started on oboe... the ultimate "i'm better than you") [every good oboe player i've met has this disposition to a degree but in particular here he's inspired by someone i knew in high school who learned the instrument over summer break so that he could play WE solos and go to state solo competition and get into conservatories after graduating. mean and sarcastic and overcompetent and yeah this might have been where my type was established]
sumi does colorguard (captain) and maybe viola. it would be really funny if kasumi played violin
chad narukami plays tenor sax. someone walks in on him blasting specialist on the band room speakers and dancing with the lights off
minato guest conductor from the moon or sleepy grad student [ i made him a grad student in the fic. probably an ed major. probably plays violin in orchestra...]
fuuka plays the triangle only. ding [i'm pretty sure this was just a joke sorry fuuka. i think she'd be a conical brass player like euph would be a good fit for her. damn maybe i should do the rest of the p3 cast]
rise soprano soloist maybe
shiho plays the trumpet. and shes really good at it [there are two types of trumpet players. the stereotypical egotistical guys you see in hs bands, and the calm competent people who are actually reliable. she's in the second group]
mishima 4th clarinet. he was made for that spot
[this part made it into the fic:] goro transfers from a competitive school into the more chill music program at the PTs school, auditions at the start of the year and ousts the first chair [mika], kinda acts like a stuck up asshole most of the time. he's the most ass section leader ever. the transfer fucked up his credits so he has to take a comparative lit course (with kawakami lol) and he starts making reeds before class so akira sits next to him and bugs him about it. later that day he gets to rehearsal early and sees akira setting up there and goes wtf
maslanka 10 esque duet part at the end w just piano and oboe. they're told to sectionalize and git gud and then they're like hey actually playing together is fun and the soundproof basement is great and not creepy [what is with me and the soundproof dorm basements. this is actually referring to a different basement than the one in heabtw believe it or not. anyway i did sneak a direct link to this symphony in the fic itself and shuake's text discussion is about this piece so you're reading this you should listen to the whole thing... personally i like the university of utah WE's recording, iirc they did the world premier as well]
akira offers to play piano for a jury or smth. hes not experienced w accompanying and goro is hard to follow but they work it out
goro tries to talk to the director to audition for orchestra and then the [ok god this is about how as a freshman a week or two into my first term i was told to talk to the orchestra director to audition and when i knocked on his office door and asked about it he was like "can you play?" and i said yes i'm in WE and he said great! show up to the next rehearsal and closed the door]
goro joins orchestra and they do a concerto competition [every winter at my school they let orchestra students audition to perform a concerto at the semester concert, i never had the balls to audition but knew a lot of people who did]
they trade instruments in the practice room, akira sounds like a dying goose and goro presses keys at random. the rituals [the title of this note in my phone was "the rituals. they are intricate"]
the local music shop is called the velvet room [i already implied in-fic that igor directs orchestra so i guess the shop is just run by the attendants?]
goro double majors in something pre-law and music bc of that sweet sweet scholarship offer
the music major prejudice. the outrage [there was some bias against non music majors even though non majors made up a significant portion of our ensembles bc we were primarily a science and engineering university. pretty much everyone was ok with this, the orchestra director loved engr majors, the music dept made logistical changes to make the lives of us stem majors easier, but the WE director straight up liked us less lmao but its ok bc he was an asshole anyway. i get that it's important to prioritize your music majors over some guy from stem, even if Some Guy From Stem beat them for principal chair in auditions, but it's also funny when the director calls for a chamber ensemble or smth for Music Majors Only except there are no music major flutes so it's just me in there with all the other majors ruining his purity. hey dr. c when you say something is for the performance majors and the education majors can you include me in that as well the perf majors and the ed majors and cam if it's not too much trouble thanks guys. this isn't even about shuake anymore
goro pretends to have perfect pitch but he is hashtag exposed by akira who actually has perfect pitch and vows to hate him forever [i didn't know i had perfect pitch until 10th grade when i tripped and fell into playing timpani in hs indoor percussion and i was tuning the stupid things and our front ensemble tech was like do you have perfect pitch. and i said no i'm pretty sure everyone can do this. this would happen to akira i think]
they lowkey follow each other to more and more ensembles and gigs
pit orchestra. ur crammed together in the dark what could be better [oboe and drumset would be nowhere near each other lmfao but it's the thought that counts. they could roll their eyes and mouth the lyrics at each other. akira can stare longingly from within his plexiglass jail]
the. reed water thing [aforementioned oboe player. i was in pit orchestra with him. he had to leave rehearsal early during tech or dress week. we were in the pit. he had his cup of reed water. there was nowhere to dump the reed water. he drank his reed water. like a shot.]
goro akechi breaks down sobbing and crying in the stairwell. a month later he has no recollection of this [my section insisted that this happened. i literally have no recollection of this]
[oh how could i forget... the post concert diner ritual especially getting into late at night would be so good for them accidentally getting a little close to each other. letting their guard down bc of happiness and satisfaction... just having a genuinely good time with their friends...]
pep band: goro plays trumpet bc hes a hoe for travelling for free for away games and playing loud [i'm gonna say he picked up trumpet in hs somehow bc he needed the release]. akira is the hot center snare (or singular drumset)
[i would do a marching band segment except college marching band didn't really grab me... i did a season of it then stopped. there was no competition, plus i didn't like constantly swapping out new shows instead of spending a season refining the same one, and it felt like there was no rigor or challenge. and football games are boring okay. they're fucking boring.]
wind ensemble tour or basketball game trip: loooong bus rides and maybe they sit together and akira shows goro his town in animal crossing new leaf for the nintendo 3ds. or maybe they don't. late night hotel shenanigans... goro doesn't know how to hold his liquor and drinks too much trying to keep up and look cool and pukes the morning of the performance but still manages to get it together. pancakes at the diner across from the hotel, crane games at a mall.... hee ho [fundamentally these last few are pretty american things i wouldn't even try to write it like i know how these would happen in japan]
goro gets recruited to a wind quintet and it's awkward at first. he can either make friends with everyone else there and genuinely enjoy playing with them or he can have beef with them that turns into explosive drama that breaks up the group before they can even play their first concert
