Timon was fighting against sleep in his empty nest. He shifted, trying to keep his eyes open. He couldn´t go to bed. Not yet. Not without Pumbaa.
Fortunately, he didn't have to wait very long. The warthog emerged among the bushes and walked slowly to the nest. Someone else could have said he was tired, but Timon frowned, slightly concerned about his mate.
“Ya okay darling?” The meerkat asked, his voice a little bit softer than usual. Pumbaa barely glanced at him.
“Pumbaa?” The warthog now turned his head, bemused. He blinked a couple of times. Timon wasn´t sure but he´d swear he had seen tears in his eyes.
“Pumbaa,” The meerkat guided him into their nest, making him get comfortable and grooming his hair. “Is everything alright honey?”
Timon didn´t say a word, just kept grooming him.
“ I tried to pick up Simba today” he said, after a silent moment. “You know, in my hooves, like we always do” Timon nodded as he moved to positionate himself face to face with Pumbaa.
“I tried." he continued, soft tears started to fall across his eyes. “But then I realised I hadn´t the strength. He was too heavy. He was too big for my tusks.” Then came an ugly sob. Pumbaa laid down, refusing to look at Timon. “I-I don´t know, I love Simba, it just… He's so big now” he whispered.
“He is” Timon agreed, his voice was almost a whisper. He stroked himself against Pumbaa, not very sure of what to say. Comfort wasn't exactly Timon's strongest point, and the fact that he had been feeling many of those same feelings lately didn't help either.
“He was so little. Scared. Did you remember how small he was when we picked him up for the first time?” Pumbaa smiled through tears.
“I miss when he was that size”
Minutes passed silently among them. They started to fall asleep against each other´s warmth.
“What if he doesn't need us anymore?” Pumbaa muttered after a while. Before Timon could answer, a new movement emerged from the bushes.
A teen lion approached the nest, slowly but without hesitation.
“Timon…” he realised both of them were awake “Guys?” Timon sat up, totally focused on Simba now.
“Do you mind if I sleep with you tonight? I had a bad dream.” There was no embarrassment although Simba didn`t look at them either.
“Of course!” Pumbaa intervene. Simba jumped into the nest immediately. It was a little bit harder for him to fit in, but they solved things quickly.
“Thanks…” he muttered. Timon and Pumbaa glanced at each other. Maybe there will come a time when Simba wouldn't need them but, for now, he is still their little cub.
